BUNCHBERRY (Cornus unalaschkensis)
Bunchberry is a low-growing, rhizomatous perennial that forms a beautiful groundcover under trees. It prefers moist soil with lots of organic matter, such as decaying logs or stumps.
The true flowers are small purple spikes, but the flowers are surrounded by showy white bracts that bloom in early summer. In the late summer and early fall, the fruit forms into a dense cluster of bright red berries.
This plant is deer resistant, and the berries provide food for sparrows, thrushes, grouse, and other birds.
