Making the case: Should Auburn give Holden Geriner a shot at quarterback?

Should the Tigers take a hard look at their third-string QB?

Auburn has a problem at quarterback.

Michigan State transfer Payton Thorne has not impressed through four games as the Tigers' primary signal-caller, leading offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery to pull him out for Robby Ashford, last year's starter.

The rotation has been clunky, with no success and a clear lack of rhythm. It feels like a tale we've been reading about Auburn forever; they can't find a solid, consistent quarterback to lead the offense.

The issue reared its ugly head once again on the road in a 27-10 loss to Texas A&M.

All QBs were subpar statistically, and when Auburn went to Holden Geriner for the final drive, he went 2-for-7 passing and had a couple of missed throws. The confidence was there, but the completions weren't.

Hugh Freeze was asked during Monday's press conference about how Holden performed in his one drive against A&M and how he could be handled moving forward.

According to Freeze, Geriner could end up being the guy if he gets a lot of reps.

"I think Holden if he ends up being the guy, he's got to have a lot of reps," Freeze said. "He seemed poised, his throws were inaccurate... but really he was about 1-for-5 on accuracy... You're talking about a guy we haven't given quality reps. I think with more reps he could be more accurate... He stands tall in the pocket."

Freeze also pointed out that Geriner has the quickest release of all of the quarterbacks. We've seen the mechanics in practice quite a bit, and there's no arguing that Geriner throws a pretty ball.

Getting him those extra reps seems unlikely this far into the season, but never say never. With a bye week on the horizon, Freeze believes there's a lot of things Auburn has to reevaluate... quarterback being one of them.

"We've got an open week coming up where we've got to look at a lot of things," Freeze said. "I've got a whole list that I'm formulating."
