1Annual Report  //  Alzheimer’s Association Rochester & Finger Lakes Region
a message from our
president & board chair
Dear Friends,
We are pleased to share with you the
Alzheimer’s Association Rochester and Finger
Lakes Region 2015 Annual Report. We are
proud of our accomplishments over the last
year as we delivered programs and services
throughout our nine-county region.
Highlights of the last year are many:
»» We served over 3,600 people in the
Rochester and Finger Lakes Region
through our core services of information/
referral, care consultation, support
groups, safety services, and education
»» Our advocacy efforts helped position
New York State as a leader in the fight
against the Alzheimer’s epidemic, with
a state appropriation of $25 million per
year for the next two years for caregiver
support services
»» We launched the Rural Outreach
Program, funded by a generous
grant from the Daisy Marquis Jones
Foundation. A first of its kind, this
program assists Amish and Mennonite
communities who are impacted by
Alzheimer’s disease
»» Our 2015 Walk season was our biggest
yet with over 3,500 spirited participants
and a fundraising total exceeding
$440,000
Your generous support has helped the
Alzheimer’s Association be a beacon of hope
for both those living with Alzheimer’s and
their devoted loved ones. For that, we are
grateful. But standing up to Alzheimer’s also
takes incredible strength and determination.
Until the day when an Alzheimer’s
breakthrough is found, we will continue to
support, advocate for, and rally around those
in need.
We thank you, our supporters, for your
remarkable generosity. We vow to continue
to be good stewards of that generosity by
investing in critical programs and services to
support those affected by Alzheimer’s while
continuing to raise research money to find a
cure.
In this annual report, you will find several
inspiring stories, including one of Burt
Gordon’s commitment to the memory
of his dear wife, and the Norton family’s
determination to stay strong against the
greatest odds. We are grateful to them for all
that they do to raise concern and awareness
of our cause, and for their willingness to let
us share their stories. We would also like to
pay special tribute to Bill Konar, who lost
his battle to Alzheimer’s disease last year,
and to the Konar family for their enduring
commitment to the cause—this annual report
is dedicated to them.

2 Annual Report  //  Alzheimer’s Association Rochester & Finger Lakes Region
our vision is a world without alzheimer’s
no one should face alzheimer’s alone
The Alzheimer’s Association Rochester & Finger Lakes Region serves individuals
and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders (AD*) by providing
programs, services, and advocacy across nine counties in Upstate New York.
Our core services
Founded in 1981, our local organization serves
individuals and families affected by AD. We provide
the following programs and services in our nine-
county region:
24-Hour Helpline: The Alzheimer’s Association
24/7 helpline provides reliable information and
support to people with memory loss, as well as
caregivers, health care professionals, and the public.
Our knowledgeable staff can help you understand
dementia and AD and their treatment options;
provide general information about aging; and teach
skills in providing quality care and making legal/
financial decisions.
Care Consultations: Our professional staff is
dedicated to helping you and your family navigate
your journey with AD. During a care consultation,
we can help assess your needs and discuss care
planning, home safety, and other concerns.
Education: Learn more about AD through our
free community education series. These classes are
designed to address topics including understanding
the basics of dementia, effective communication,
home safety and driving.
Information and Referral: Individuals and
caregivers can look to us for informational literature
as well as important referrals to a variety of
community resources such as elder law attorneys,
geriatric care managers, home care agencies, and
senior living facilities.
Respite Services: Respite care provides caregivers a
temporary break from caregiving, while the person
with AD continues to receive care in a safe and
supportive environment. Using respite services can
support and strengthen your ability to be a caregiver.
Social Activities: A person with AD doesn’t have
to give up the activities he or she loves. We offer
several free opportunities each month to gather with
others who have AD and their loved ones. Daytrips
to GEVA, the Memorial Art Gallery, the Rochester
Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Seneca Park Zoo
are among the social activities we offer.
Support Groups: Alzheimer’s Association support
groups offer caregivers or persons with AD
the opportunity to meet with others in similar
circumstances at a regularly scheduled meeting in a
safe, confidential environment. Trained volunteer
facilitators are paired with professional staff to lead all
groups.

Our mission is a bold one: To eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the
advancement of research, to provide and enhance care and support for all affected,
and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

“Instead of focusing on what I can no longer do,
I focus on how I can still make a difference.”
Rev. Dr. Cynthia Huling Hummel
Rev. Dr. Cynthia Huling Hummel was preparing
to defend her doctoral thesis when something
alarming started happening: she couldn’t recall the
course material or concepts she had been studying
for years. She persevered but the symptoms remained,
and as she began her work as a minister, she struggled
to remember the names of parishioners and topics
of previous sermons. After years of disguising her
difficulties through the help of detailed notes and the
support of friends, Cynthia made an appointment to
see her primary care physician.
In 2011 at the age of just 57, Cynthia was diagnosed
with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Then in
2014, Cynthia’s mother passed away with AD—a
wake-up call she couldn’t ignore about her own
health. And so, with the help of her church, Cynthia
immediately filed for long-term disability. For
Cynthia, it was a bleak reality and she was devastated
to leave a career that had been her identity for 15
years.
Soon Cynthia would find a new
identity: Alzheimer’s activist
Cynthia’s congregation and her family were
supportive after hearing of her diagnosis and this
support helped Cynthia transition from asking
herself, “why me?” to “what’s next?” First she got her
personal matters in order by meeting with her elder
law attorney and establishing powers of attorney for
health care and property. Then she looked outward.
Through her relationship with the Alzheimer’s
Association Rochester & Finger Lakes Region,
Cynthia has been trained to become an early-stage
Alzheimer’s support facilitator and has joined the
Chapter’s Early-Stage Advisory Council. Today,
she is a member of the Speaker’s Bureau and a host
of Meet Me at the Museum, a social engagement
program for people in the early stage of Alzheimer’s.
Cynthia is also enrolled in the Alzheimer’s Disease
Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) study at the
University of Rochester, which she learned about
through the Alzheimer’s Association’s TrialMatch®, a
clinical trials matching service.
“My life changed dramatically when I was diagnosed with
MCI,” says Cynthia. “It was a frightening and confusing
time in my life and the Alzheimer’s Association was
there for me, providing me with helpful information and
caring support. I decided then and there to volunteer for
the Alzheimer’s Association and to help others who were
dealing with a diagnosis.”
Cynthia says one of her biggest achievements through
her involvement with the Association was being
elected as a member of the Alzheimer’s Association
National Early-Stage Advisory Group, which helps
raise awareness of Alzheimer’s and reduces stigma
associated with the disease by sharing personal stories
and experiences of living with dementia.
For Cynthia, being a part of the Alzheimer’s
Association National Early-Stage Advisory Group
means something more: to raise awareness of early
stage issues and demonstrate the many “faces and
facets” of the disease. She says she aspires to raise
hope among others living with the disease that
there is life after diagnosis and to encourage people
to participate in clinical studies in order to advance
research.
“The Alzheimer’s Association encouraged me to get
involved and has given me so many opportunities to serve.
Instead of focusing on what I can no longer do, I focus on
how I can still make a difference. I participate in research,
and I look for ways to raise awareness and funds to help
others support our Association’s critical programs and
services.”
strength & perseverance in the
face of alzheimer’s disease
5Annual Report  //  Alzheimer’s Association Rochester & Finger Lakes Region
The Alzheimer’s Association
in partnership with the
Memorial Art Gallery
(MAG), launched the Meet
Me at the MAG program
in 2009. The program is
designed for people with
Alzheimer’s disease and their
care partners. This supportive
and nurturing environment
helps to elicit memories
of the past and promotes
self-expression through the
invaluable impact of art.
During the tours, the
museum is closed to the
public to offer a private and
peaceful environment for
participants to enjoy the
massive collections of more
than 12,000 works of art
spanning more than 5,000
years of history. Each tour
is guided by an Alzheimer’s
Association trained docent,
beginning with a short recital
on the 18th Century Italian
Baroque Pipe Organ and
concluding with a reception
where participants are given
an opportunity to socialize.
This program helps people
with Alzheimer’s to
communicate in creative and
expressive ways. “Language is
one of the parts of our personality
that the disease takes away,”
says Susan Dodge Peters
Daiss, MAG Director of
Education. “So smiles and
engagement are additional parts
of language they can use to
communicate and that is what
docents are trained to look for.”
Burton Gordon and his
wife, Audrey, were one of
the first couples to participate
in the Meet Me at the MAG
Program. This program
brought such value to them
that Burt decided to make a
long-term commitment to
support the program. Though
Audrey passed away from
Alzheimer’s disease in 2010,
Burt continues to support
this important program. Prior
to her Alzheimer’s diagnosis
Audrey was very active at
the MAG and was a docent
there for 25 years. Burt felt
by supporting this program
in Audrey’s memory it was a
perfect way to honor her.
“I support the Alzheimer’s
Association because of the help
my family and I received,”
says Burt. “The education
classes are just marvelous. Our
whole family participated, even
my grandchildren. When we
were first introduced to the
Alzheimer’s Association, we
participated in ‘The Basics,
Understanding Alzheimer’s.’
It is an education class that
as a family helped us better
understand the signs to look
for, what to expect with the
disease and tips on how to help
communicate effectively,” he says.
“It is a very good program and I
would highly recommend it.”
We are grateful to the Burton Gordon family for
their generous support of Meet Me at the MAG,
which allows the Alzheimer’s Association and
the Memorial Art Gallery to collaborate and
offer this life-enriching program for people with
Alzheimer’s disease and their loved ones.

“Life with Bill was always an
adventure,” says Sheila Konar.
Married for more than 61 years,
she recalled a story about the time
she was returning home from
running an errand and was stopped
at the end of her driveway by a
man wearing a dark suit. He asked
her name; she replied and that this
was where she lived. The security
guard then let her by. Apparently
Bill had planned a dinner party
for 100 guests the next day with
Israel’s Prime Minister Yitzhak
Rabin and forgot to let his wife
know. The security guard had been
assigned to clear the premises for
Rabin’s arrival.
The Prime
Minister
was one of
many notable
dignitaries
that the
Konars hosted
over the years
in their home
in Pittsford.
Another
dignitary was
Elie Wiesel,
Nobel
Laureate.
Both Bill and Elie were not only
concentration camp survivors but
their friendship began when they
were bunkmates at Auschwitz
many years before.
At fifteen years of age, Bill was
liberated from the concentration
camps by American troops in
1945 with his brothers where
they landed in Rochester through
an orphan relocation program.
Arriving in America with nothing,
Bill did a variety of jobs, including
selling canned foods and kosher
pickles to grocers and restaurants,
and eventually built a business out
of “rack jobbing” or placing health
and beauty aids in food stores.
Ultimately he went into a new
business – owning and operating
a hugely successful chain of 84
discount drugstores. Later he sold
the drugstore operation, which
eventually became known as CVS,
and became active in real estate.
As successful as he was in business,
Bill was even more generous in his
philanthropy. With Sheila’s support
and that of their two children,
Howard and Rachel, and their
five grandchildren, the family
has generously supported causes
dear to them. This includes the
Alzheimer’s Association, giving
the Rochester Chapter’s first and
only Zenith Society* gift, and the
Holocaust Museum in Washington
DC, where Sheila and Bill were
founding members.
Though Bill lost his courageous
battle to Alzheimer’s disease in
June 2015, the Konar family
remains committed to living out
Bill’s vision of
giving back to
our community
in countless ways,
always carrying
with them his
words, “If I have a
roof over my head, a
window to look out
of and food on the
table, we will always
give back.”
The Konar
Family Foundation generously
supports the mission of the
Alzheimer’s Association by
underwriting a variety of social
engagement programs and services
including GEVA performances;
the Jewish Community Center’s
Music, Mindfulness & Motion
program; and open rehearsals
at the Rochester Philharmonic
Orchestra. Thanks to their support,
vibrant educational programs have
also been delivered to support the
family and professional caregiver
as well as those with early stage
dementia so that families do not
have to travel this difficult journey
alone.
The Alzheimer’s Association
will be eternally grateful for the
generous spirit that embodies
Bill and Sheila Konar and their
family, and dedicates this annual
report in their honor.
a legacy of adventure

*	With a membership of 70 since its founding in 1990, The Alzheimer’s Association Zenith Society represents our highest
and most involved level of philanthropy—setting the bar for leadership giving in critical mission areas of Alzheimer’s care,
advocacy, awareness, and research. Together, these inspirational donors are transforming the realities of Alzheimer’s disease
by supporting more than 100 leading researchers with more than $90 million contributed to Alzheimer’s Association
research, care, support, and advocacy since its inception.

Imagine you are 43 years old with a supportive
husband, two wonderful children, and a circle of
close friends. Then one day you can’t remember
how to get home from your child’s soccer game.
Panic sets in and the doctor appointments begin.
In 2013, Amy Norton was diagnosed with early-
onset Alzheimer’s* at the age of 43. It was a day
that turned the lives of her husband Brian and their
children, Megan, 16, and Justin, 13, upside down.
Almost immediately, Brian had to take on the role
of running the household, tending to Megan and
Justin’s needs, and providing day-to-day care to Amy.
But while his wife’s cognitive ability was slipping
away more and more each day, Brian was determined
to take on an even greater challenge: to do all he
could to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease
and to advocate for greater funding and support for
the thousands in our community living with the
disease.
making a difference at home
and beyond
Brian and his family initially became involved with
the Alzheimer’s Association Rochester & Finger
Lakes Region as participants in our caregiver support
groups and educational programs. Though Brian was
able to participate and find meaning in the programs
offered, Megan felt left out, so she helped the
organization launch an innovative teen group where
she and others her age could find support through
sharing and connection. In addition, Brian, Megan,
and Justin devoted additional time to advocacy
efforts in our local community and participate in
the Alzheimer’s Association’s annual Rally Day in
our state capitol. Brian, Megan, and Justin testified
to our New York State elected officials about the
importance of passing legislation that positively
impacts those affected by Alzheimer’s disease and
their caregivers.
The Nortons have also rallied family members,
neighbors, and others to join them in raising money
for the Alzheimer’s Association’s annual signature
fundraising event, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s,
bringing their two-year family team total to more
than $25,000 to help support our programs and
services.
“I have found a place of comfort and fellowship through
the Alzheimer’s Association’s support groups and caregiver
conferences. Being around others who are experiencing
the same challenges is extremely beneficial,” says Brian.
“Participating in these programs, as well as advocating on
behalf of the Association, has given me a level of strength
and determination to care for Amy and to keep fighting.”
of the 5.3 million Americans with Alzheimer’s disease,
approximately 200,000 have early onset Alzheimer’s.
living in the moment: a young family’s
passionate fight against alzheimer’s
* Early-Onset Alzheimer disease affects people younger than the age of 65.
“Although we give Amy our best each day and work
hard to care for her, we realize we are not in control
of this disease or the course it will take,” says Brian.
“We have chosen to find some positive meaning as we
face this challenge, and our work with the Alzheimer’s
Association provides a sense of purpose and enables us
to feel some control over this disease.”
The Norton Family
“We have chosen to find some positive
meaning as we face this challenge.”
Foundations are at the cornerstone of giving, and thanks to the generous support of many local
foundations, the Alzheimer’s Association is able to enhance and expand care and support we
provide to people in our region facing the challenges of Alzheimer’s.
foundation profile
Thanks to ongoing support from the
Daisy Marquis Jones Foundation the
Alzheimer’s Association is able to expand
and grow its programs and services for
persons with Alzheimer’s disease and
their caregivers in the Mennonite/
Amish community in Yates County,
as well as for others in Yates county.
There is a rising need for dementia
programs and services in Yates County
to promote aging in place for persons
with Alzheimer’s disease and their families. Adults age 65 and over are the fastest growing
demographic in the Finger Lakes Region, and this population is vulnerable because of limited
geriatric services, transportation and other caregiver resources.
Thanks to Daisy Marquis Jones Foundation’s giving, the Alzheimer’s Association established
a Rural Outreach Program that empowers community members to improve the quality of
health for Yates County residents by providing them with the knowledge and tools needed
to help themselves to remain in their homes and communities for as long as possible. Since
the Mennonite/Amish are less likely to utilize services outside of the community, our
collaborative, person/caregiver-centered approach helps these communities to integrate
support and management strategies that can delay or entirely avoid nursing home placement.
For this program, The Alzheimer’s Association trains local residents in these areas who will
then serve as the content expert and peer educators for their community neighbors. Through
the support of the Daisy Marquis Jones Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Association has begun to
overcome the initial challenge by connecting with community Bishops, who play a leadership
role in all aspects of the Mennonite/Amish community.
Through ongoing collaboration between the Alzheimer’s Association and the Mennonite/
Amish community, we hope to achieve a better quality of life for members of their community
with Alzheimer disease and their caregivers.

have positioned New York
State as a leader in the fight
against the Alzheimer’s
epidemic, creating a model

appropriation of $25 million
per year, for at least 2 years, is
the single largest investment
in caregiver support services
by any state in the nation.
a world without alzheimer’s:
you can help make it happen
We have volunteer opportunities for all ages and abilities that include providing
support for individuals and families facing Alzheimer’s and other dementias,
raising awareness of the disease and of the resources available in the community,
advocating for public policies, and helping to raise funds for local Alzheimer’s
Association programs and for research. For more information on our volunteer
opportunties, call (585) 760-5400 or visit alz.org/rochesterny.
Alzheimer’s Accountability Act
This bipartisan legislation
enacted as part of the fiscal year
2015 omnibus appropriations
bill, requires the scientists at the
National Institutes of Health to
submit an annual Alzheimer’s
research budget proposal directly
to Congress. This Act ensures
Congress hears directly from
scientists what they will need
to prevent and effectively treat
Alzheimer’s by 2025.
We are the experts leading the fight to end Alzheimer’s—a disease that remains one of the
most critical public health issues in America. This is why we are unrelenting in our advocacy
for public policy issues and critical research funding.

  • 3. 1Annual Report  //  Alzheimer’s Association Rochester & Finger Lakes Region a message from our president & board chair Dear Friends, We are pleased to share with you the Alzheimer’s Association Rochester and Finger Lakes Region 2015 Annual Report. We are proud of our accomplishments over the last year as we delivered programs and services throughout our nine-county region. Highlights of the last year are many: »» We served over 3,600 people in the Rochester and Finger Lakes Region through our core services of information/ referral, care consultation, support groups, safety services, and education »» Our advocacy efforts helped position New York State as a leader in the fight against the Alzheimer’s epidemic, with a state appropriation of $25 million per year for the next two years for caregiver support services »» We launched the Rural Outreach Program, funded by a generous grant from the Daisy Marquis Jones Foundation. A first of its kind, this program assists Amish and Mennonite communities who are impacted by Alzheimer’s disease »» Our 2015 Walk season was our biggest yet with over 3,500 spirited participants and a fundraising total exceeding $440,000 Your generous support has helped the Alzheimer’s Association be a beacon of hope for both those living with Alzheimer’s and their devoted loved ones. For that, we are grateful. But standing up to Alzheimer’s also takes incredible strength and determination. Until the day when an Alzheimer’s breakthrough is found, we will continue to support, advocate for, and rally around those in need. We thank you, our supporters, for your remarkable generosity. We vow to continue to be good stewards of that generosity by investing in critical programs and services to support those affected by Alzheimer’s while continuing to raise research money to find a cure. In this annual report, you will find several inspiring stories, including one of Burt Gordon’s commitment to the memory of his dear wife, and the Norton family’s determination to stay strong against the greatest odds. We are grateful to them for all that they do to raise concern and awareness of our cause, and for their willingness to let us share their stories. We would also like to pay special tribute to Bill Konar, who lost his battle to Alzheimer’s disease last year, and to the Konar family for their enduring commitment to the cause—this annual report is dedicated to them. Teresa A. Galbier President/CEO Brian Heppard, MD Board Chair
  • 4. 2 Annual Report  //  Alzheimer’s Association Rochester & Finger Lakes Region our vision is a world without alzheimer’s no one should face alzheimer’s alone The Alzheimer’s Association Rochester & Finger Lakes Region serves individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders (AD*) by providing programs, services, and advocacy across nine counties in Upstate New York. Our core services Founded in 1981, our local organization serves individuals and families affected by AD. These classes are designed to address topics including understanding the basics of dementia, effective communication, home safety and driving. Information and Referral: Individuals and caregivers can look to us for informational literature as well as important referrals to a variety of community resources such as elder law attorneys, geriatric care managers, home care agencies, and senior living facilities. Respite Services: Respite care provides caregivers a temporary break from caregiving, while the person with AD continues to receive care in a safe and supportive environment. Using respite services can support and strengthen your ability to be a caregiver. Social Activities: A person with AD doesn’t have to give up the activities he or she loves. We offer several free opportunities each month to gather with others who have AD and their loved ones. Daytrips to GEVA, the Memorial Art Gallery, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Seneca Park Zoo are among the social activities we offer. Support Groups: Alzheimer’s Association support groups offer caregivers or persons with AD the opportunity to meet with others in similar circumstances at a regularly scheduled meeting in a safe, confidential environment. Trained volunteer facilitators are paired with professional staff to lead all groups. For more information regarding programs and services, (800) 272-3900, or visit alz.org/rochesterny Our mission is a bold one: To eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research, to provide and enhance care and support for all affected, and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. * Throughout the annual report AD refers to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

  • 7. Rev. Dr. Cynthia Huling Hummel was preparing to defend her doctoral thesis when something alarming started happening: she couldn’t recall the course material or concepts she had been studying for years. She persevered but the symptoms remained, and as she began her work as a minister, she struggled to remember the names of parishioners and topics of previous sermons. After years of disguising her difficulties through the help of detailed notes and the support of friends, Cynthia made an appointment to see her primary care physician. In 2011 at the age of just 57, Cynthia was diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Then in 2014, Cynthia’s mother passed away with AD—a wake-up call she couldn’t ignore about her own health. And so, with the help of her church, Cynthia immediately filed for long-term disability. For Cynthia, it was a bleak reality and she was devastated to leave a career that had been her identity for 15 years. Soon Cynthia would find a new identity: Alzheimer’s activist Cynthia’s congregation and her family were supportive after hearing of her diagnosis and this support helped Cynthia transition from asking herself, “why me?” to “what’s next?” First she got her personal matters in order by meeting with her elder law attorney and establishing powers of attorney for health care and property. Then she looked outward. Through her relationship with the Alzheimer’s Association Rochester & Finger Lakes Region, Cynthia has been trained to become an early-stage Alzheimer’s support facilitator and has joined the Chapter’s Early-Stage Advisory Council. Today, she is a member of the Speaker’s Bureau and a host of Meet Me at the Museum, a social engagement program for people in the early stage of Alzheimer’s. Cynthia is also enrolled in the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) study at the University of Rochester, which she learned about through the Alzheimer’s Association’s TrialMatch®, a clinical trials matching service. “My life changed dramatically when I was diagnosed with MCI,” says Cynthia. “It was a frightening and confusing time in my life and the Alzheimer’s Association was there for me, providing me with helpful information and caring support. I decided then and there to volunteer for the Alzheimer’s Association and to help others who were dealing with a diagnosis.” Cynthia says one of her biggest achievements through her involvement with the Association was being elected as a member of the Alzheimer’s Association National Early-Stage Advisory Group, which helps raise awareness of Alzheimer’s and reduces stigma associated with the disease by sharing personal stories and experiences of living with dementia. For Cynthia, being a part of the Alzheimer’s Association National Early-Stage Advisory Group means something more: to raise awareness of early stage issues and demonstrate the many “faces and facets” of the disease. She says she aspires to raise hope among others living with the disease that there is life after diagnosis and to encourage people to participate in clinical studies in order to advance research. “The Alzheimer’s Association encouraged me to get involved and has given me so many opportunities to serve. Instead of focusing on what I can no longer do, I focus on how I can still make a difference. I participate in research, and I look for ways to raise awareness and funds to help others support our Association’s critical programs and services.” strength & perseverance in the face of alzheimer’s disease 5Annual Report  //  Alzheimer’s Association Rochester & Finger Lakes Region
  • 8. The Alzheimer’s Association in partnership with the Memorial Art Gallery (MAG), launched the Meet Me at the MAG program in 2009. The program is designed for people with Alzheimer’s disease and their care partners. This supportive and nurturing environment helps to elicit memories of the past and promotes self-expression through the invaluable impact of art. During the tours, the museum is closed to the public to offer a private and peaceful environment for participants to enjoy the massive collections of more than 12,000 works of art spanning more than 5,000 years of history. Each tour is guided by an Alzheimer’s Association trained docent, beginning with a short recital on the 18th Century Italian Baroque Pipe Organ and concluding with a reception where participants are given an opportunity to socialize. This program helps people with Alzheimer’s to communicate in creative and expressive ways. “Language is one of the parts of our personality that the disease takes away,” says Susan Dodge Peters Daiss, MAG Director of Education. “So smiles and engagement are additional parts of language they can use to communicate and that is what docents are trained to look for.” Burton Gordon and his wife, Audrey, were one of the first couples to participate in the Meet Me at the MAG Program. This program brought such value to them that Burt decided to make a long-term commitment to support the program. Though Audrey passed away from Alzheimer’s disease in 2010, Burt continues to support this important program. Prior to her Alzheimer’s diagnosis Audrey was very active at the MAG and was a docent there for 25 years. Burt felt by supporting this program in Audrey’s memory it was a perfect way to honor her. “I support the Alzheimer’s Association because of the help my family and I received,” says Burt. “The education classes are just marvelous. Our whole family participated, even my grandchildren. When we were first introduced to the Alzheimer’s Association, we participated in ‘The Basics, Understanding Alzheimer’s.’ It is an education class that as a family helped us better understand the signs to look for, what to expect with the disease and tips on how to help communicate effectively,” he says. “It is a very good program and I would highly recommend it.” We are grateful to the Burton Gordon family for their generous support of Meet Me at the MAG, which allows the Alzheimer’s Association and the Memorial Art Gallery to collaborate and offer this life-enriching program for people with Alzheimer’s disease and their loved ones. 6 Annual Report  //  Alzheimer’s Association Rochester & Finger Lakes Region meet me at the mag 18th Century Italian Baroque Pipe Organ Madeleine S. • 9. “Life with Bill was always an adventure,” says Sheila Konar. Married for more than 61 years, she recalled a story about the time she was returning home from running an errand and was stopped at the end of her driveway by a man wearing a dark suit. He asked her name; she replied and that this was where she lived. The security guard then let her by. Apparently Bill had planned a dinner party for 100 guests the next day with Israel’s Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and forgot to let his wife know. The security guard had been assigned to clear the premises for Rabin’s arrival. The Prime Minister was one of many notable dignitaries that the Konars hosted over the years in their home in Pittsford. Another dignitary was Elie Wiesel, Nobel Laureate. Both Bill and Elie were not only concentration camp survivors but their friendship began when they were bunkmates at Auschwitz many years before. At fifteen years of age, Bill was liberated from the concentration camps by American troops in 1945 with his brothers where they landed in Rochester through an orphan relocation program. Arriving in America with nothing, Bill did a variety of jobs, including selling canned foods and kosher pickles to grocers and restaurants, and eventually built a business out of “rack jobbing” or placing health and beauty aids in food stores. Ultimately he went into a new business – owning and operating a hugely successful chain of 84 discount drugstores. Later he sold the drugstore operation, which eventually became known as CVS, and became active in real estate. As successful as he was in business, Bill was even more generous in his philanthropy. With Sheila’s support and that of their two children, Howard and Rachel, and their five grandchildren, the family has generously supported causes dear to them. This includes the Alzheimer’s Association, giving the Rochester Chapter’s first and only Zenith Society* gift, and the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC, where Sheila and Bill were founding members. Though Bill lost his courageous battle to Alzheimer’s disease in June 2015, the Konar family remains committed to living out Bill’s vision of giving back to our community in countless ways, always carrying with them his words, “If I have a roof over my head, a window to look out of and food on the table, we will always give back.” The Konar Family Foundation generously supports the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association by underwriting a variety of social engagement programs and services including GEVA performances; the Jewish Community Center’s Music, Mindfulness & Motion program; and open rehearsals at the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Thanks to their support, vibrant educational programs have also been delivered to support the family and professional caregiver as well as those with early stage dementia so that families do not have to travel this difficult journey alone. The Alzheimer’s Association will be eternally grateful for the generous spirit that embodies Bill and Sheila Konar and their family, and dedicates this annual report in their honor. a legacy of adventure and giving back * With a membership of 70 since its founding in 1990, The Alzheimer’s Association Zenith Society represents our highest and most involved level of philanthropy—setting the bar for leadership giving in critical mission areas of Alzheimer’s care, advocacy, awareness, and research. Together, these inspirational donors are transforming the realities of Alzheimer’s disease by supporting more than 100 leading researchers with more than $90 million contributed to Alzheimer’s Association research, care, support, and advocacy since its inception. • 10. 8 Annual Report  //  Alzheimer’s Association Rochester & Finger Lakes Region Imagine you are 43 years old with a supportive husband, two wonderful children, and a circle of close friends. Then one day you can’t remember how to get home from your child’s soccer game. Panic sets in and the doctor appointments begin. In 2013, Amy Norton was diagnosed with early- onset Alzheimer’s* at the age of 43. It was a day that turned the lives of her husband Brian and their children, Megan, 16, and Justin, 13, upside down. Almost immediately, Brian had to take on the role of running the household, tending to Megan and Justin’s needs, and providing day-to-day care to Amy. But while his wife’s cognitive ability was slipping away more and more each day, Brian was determined to take on an even greater challenge: to do all he could to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and to advocate for greater funding and support for the thousands in our community living with the disease. making a difference at home and beyond Brian and his family initially became involved with the Alzheimer’s Association Rochester & Finger Lakes Region as participants in our caregiver support groups and educational programs. Though Brian was able to participate and find meaning in the programs offered, Megan felt left out, so she helped the organization launch an innovative teen group where she and others her age could find support through sharing and connection. In addition, Brian, Megan, and Justin devoted additional time to advocacy efforts in our local community and participate in the Alzheimer’s Association’s annual Rally Day in our state capitol. Brian, Megan, and Justin testified to our New York State elected officials about the importance of passing legislation that positively impacts those affected by Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers. The Nortons have also rallied family members, neighbors, and others to join them in raising money for the Alzheimer’s Association’s annual signature fundraising event, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, bringing their two-year family team total to more than $25,000 to help support our programs and services. “I have found a place of comfort and fellowship through the Alzheimer’s Association’s support groups and caregiver conferences. Being around others who are experiencing the same challenges is extremely beneficial,” says Brian. “Participating in these programs, as well as advocating on behalf of the Association, has given me a level of strength and determination to care for Amy and to keep fighting.” of the 5.3 million Americans with Alzheimer’s disease, approximately 200,000 have early onset Alzheimer’s. living in the moment: a young family’s passionate fight against alzheimer’s * Early-Onset Alzheimer disease affects people younger than the age of 65. “Although we give Amy our best each day and work hard to care for her, we realize we are not in control of this disease or the course it will take,” says Brian. “We have chosen to find some positive meaning as we face this challenge, and our work with the Alzheimer’s Association provides a sense of purpose and enables us to feel some control over this disease.”

Foundations are at the cornerstone of giving, and thanks to the generous support of many local foundations, the Alzheimer’s Association is able to enhance and expand care and support we provide to people in our region facing the challenges of Alzheimer’s. foundation profile Thanks to ongoing support from the Daisy Marquis Jones Foundation the Alzheimer’s Association is able to expand and grow its programs and services for persons with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers in the Mennonite/ Amish community in Yates County, as well as for others in Yates county. There is a rising need for dementia programs and services in Yates County to promote aging in place for persons with Alzheimer’s disease and their families. Adults age 65 and over are the fastest growing demographic in the Finger Lakes Region, and this population is vulnerable because of limited geriatric services, transportation and other caregiver resources. Thanks to Daisy Marquis Jones Foundation’s giving, the Alzheimer’s Association established a Rural Outreach Program that empowers community members to improve the quality of health for Yates County residents by providing them with the knowledge and tools needed to help themselves to remain in their homes and communities for as long as possible. Since the Mennonite/Amish are less likely to utilize services outside of the community, our collaborative, person/caregiver-centered approach helps these communities to integrate support and management strategies that can delay or entirely avoid nursing home placement. For this program, The Alzheimer’s Association trains local residents in these areas who will then serve as the content expert and peer educators for their community neighbors. Through the support of the Daisy Marquis Jones Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Association has begun to overcome the initial challenge by connecting with community Bishops, who play a leadership role in all aspects of the Mennonite/Amish community. Through ongoing collaboration between the Alzheimer’s Association and the Mennonite/ Amish community, we hope to achieve a better quality of life for members of their community with Alzheimer disease and their caregivers. 10 Annual Report  //  Alzheimer’s Association Rochester & Finger Lakes Region generosity goes a very long way
  • 13. 11Annual Report  //  Alzheimer’s Association Rochester & Finger Lakes Region $350 million increase for Alzheimer’s disease research The Alzheimer’s Association highlighted the historic $350 million increase for Alzheimer’s disease research funding in the FY2016 budget, signed into law by President Barack Obama. This marks the largest increase ever for federal Alzheimer’s research funding. New York State Funding Governor Cuomo and the New York State Legislature have positioned New York State as a leader in the fight against the Alzheimer’s epidemic, creating a model for other states to follow. The appropriation of $25 million per year, for at least 2 years, is the single largest investment in caregiver support services by any state in the nation. a world without alzheimer’s: you can help make it happen We have volunteer opportunities for all ages and abilities that include providing support for individuals and families facing Alzheimer’s and other dementias, raising awareness of the disease and of the resources available in the community, advocating for public policies, and helping to raise funds for local Alzheimer’s Association programs and for research. For more information on our volunteer opportunties, call (585) 760-5400 or visit alz.org/rochesterny. Alzheimer’s Accountability Act This bipartisan legislation enacted as part of the fiscal year 2015 omnibus appropriations bill, requires the scientists at the National Institutes of Health to submit an annual Alzheimer’s research budget proposal directly to Congress. This Act ensures Congress hears directly from scientists what they will need to prevent and effectively treat Alzheimer’s by 2025. We are the experts leading the fight to end Alzheimer’s—a disease that remains one of the most critical public health issues in America. This is why we are unrelenting in our advocacy for public policy issues and critical research funding. 2015 advocacy accomplishments a public voice being heard our biggest advocates are everyday people.
