- 2. Parkinson’s Disease • Parkinson’s Disease is a nervous system disease which is characterized by several symptoms like muscle rigidity, slowness, pain, posture problems, drooling and gait problems, all this happens because of less production of the brain neurotransmitter (Dopamine).
- 3. Festination Of Gait • Parkinsonian gait or festinating gait, is a type of gait exhibited by patients suffering from Parkinson’s Disease.
- 4. Festination Of Gait In Parkinson’s Disease • Parkinsonian gait is characterized by small shuffling steps and a general slowness of movement (hypokinesia), or even the total loss of movement (akinesia) in the extreme cases.
- 5. Abnormal Gait Characteristics Freezing : • Freezing of Gait (FOG) is typically a transient episode – lasting less than a minute, in which gait is halted and the patient complains that his/her feet are glued to the ground.
- 6. Falls • Falls, like FOG are rare in the early stages of the disorder and becomes more frequent as the disease progresses. Fall result mainly due to sudden changes in posture, in particular during everyday tasks such as walking, turning, standing and sitting.
- 7. Treatment Drugs • The most widely used form of treatment is the Levodopa in various forms. The Levodopa is able to pass blood brain barrier as a pro-drug and is Decarboxylated in the brain of the neurotransmitter dopamine by the enzyme aromatic-L- amino-acid Decarboxylase.
