Definition:
 Sententia-Moral sayings taken
from ancient or popular sources
that apply a general truth to a
situation.

Examples:
 For as Pascal reminds us, “It is not good
to have all your wants satisfied.”
 As for the saying is, art is long and life is
short.
 But, of course, to understand is to forgive
all.

Definition:
 Synecdoche- metaphor
describing a part or potion of a
whole for the thing itself. Or
where the part stands for the
whole.

Examples:
 Farm Jones has two hundred head of cattle and three
hired hands. (This means Jones owns the cattle and
the hands are attached to the bodies.)

 The army included 200 horses and 300 feet.
