Social Expectations Of Love
Love is not a concept easily defined to its fullest capacity. It has been personified, resented, and over
exaggerated throughout the history of drama and has left readers on the edge of their seats as plots
unfold. With love, there are no set guidelines or feelings that can go along with a person's actions,
but there are societal expectations that cause a couple a great deal of misery if their love does not fit
within them. Renaissance dramas often broke through these expectations to challenge the way
people viewed and thought about love. Love is portrayed as a means for freedom, a lustful
exchange, and a reward for not following social expectations in the plays The Duchess of Malfi, 'Tis
a Pity She's a Whore, and The Shoemaker's Holiday proving that it is an aloof social construct with
a range of meanings. In the play The Duchess of Malfi, love is a means of keeping an acquired
freedom. For the title character, the Duchess, she earned a peculiar freedom when her first husband
died. She gained his political power and essentially her own freedom. In the beginning of the play,
her brothers, the Cardinal and Ferdinand, threaten this freedom by all but forbidding her to remarry:
"Marry? They are most luxurious/Will wed twice" (Webster, John. 1.1.299–300). The margins tell us
that "Luxurious", in this case, means lecherous, suggesting to The Duchess that this would be her if
she were to remarry. Ferdinand's insistence the remarriage is a bad idea is for two reasons. One, he

The Winter's Tale By William Shakespeare
In the play The Winter's Tale by William Shakespeare, exists two different types of characters:
dynamic characters, meaning characters who change throughout the play by learning and growing
through their experiences, and static characters, meaning characters that stagnate from the beginning
to end. In particular, the most dynamic character in the play is King Leontes of Sicilia. In the
beginning, Leontes believes in the self–assumed belief that his wife, Queen Hermione, is having
affairs with his childhood friend, King Polixenes of Bohemia. This belief was conspired by Leontes
when he requested Hermione to convince Polixenes to prolong his visit in Sicilia after he himself
had failed. When she did succeed, Leontes became "diseased" with jealousy and came to the
assumption that Hermione and Polixenes have a "special" relationship together. With the authorial
power he possesses as king, he sentenced his pregnant wife to prison for adultery. Though Hermione
persists that he is wrong and there is a misunderstanding, Leontes, however, denies everything she
says. In this, Leontes is seen as a stubborn tyrant who abuses his divine power as king to treat his
wife as a lower being. He denies her right to speak and punishes her severely. Leontes says: You, my
lords, Look on her, mark her well; be but about To say 'she is a goodly lady, ' and The justice of your
hearts will thereto add 'Tis pity she 's not honest, honourable: ' Praise her but for this her without–

The Caterpillar Poem Analysis
The Caterpillar: Pillar of Thought The Caterpillar is a poem which focuses on the previously
overlooked actions some of us may partake in, that may not be thought much of, but have short and
long lasting effects on a scale we might not be very familiar with. Do we feel remorse for living
organisms on a small macroscopic level, or is it just an insignificant part of our complex lives? Is the
appreciation of life developed through experiences? Do we feel more pity for a single being that has
been through trauma than we do for thousands that have not? In this poem, the conflict between
caterpillars and humans is discussed in a such a way that brings up questions about how valuable we
perceive other life to be, and how different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The speaker says, " I have sworn perdition to thy race"(Barbauld 14), in which they express their
conflicted emotions. One side of them is wanting to slaughter the caterpillars and another is wanting
to show mercy and provide protection. The speaker is contemplating whether or not to continue on
with their past ways in persecution of caterpillars, or to realize what impact their actions had on the
caterpillars. When the speaker mentions, " Where, folded in their silken webs they lay/ Thriving and
happy; swept from the tree/ And crushed whole families beneath my foot"(Barbauld 19–20), they
are coming to a realization that just like humans, caterpillars have families too and they attempt to
strive and prosper in their community; until an unwanted person comes by and ruins their work and
kills their family with their foot. When the speaker mentions virtue in, " Tis not Virtue,/ Yet tis the
weakness of a virtuous mind."(Barbauld 41–42) I believe they are talking about how it is not
goodness that made them help the caterpillar, but it is the self–centeredness of human beings that
drove the behaviour. Wanting to right a wrong is common in humans and perhaps the speaker felt
that they

Theme Of Appearance Vs Reality In Hamlet
In certain instances, there is more than you can see to a story. Countless amounts of people leave out

Examples Of Suffering In King Lear
Suffering can come in a variety of different forms. The suffering in King Lear is severe as well as
being so violent that many characters are driven beyond their limits of endurance. Gloucester,
Cordelia, and Lear are pushed to their breaking points by an unlikely enforcer. In Shakespeare's
King Lear, the infliction of pain and suffering is used in order to balance the good and the evil that
we experience in the world.
First of all, the most popular forms of suffering are through physical torture or mind games that
make people lose their sanity. In "Gloucester's case," he suffered physically more than anything. A
prime example of suffering is the blinding of Gloucester. After receiving Edmunds fabricated letter
from Edgar, Gloucester is quick

Tis Pity She's A Whore by John Ford Essay
"Tis Pity She's A Whore" by John Ford
In this play it would be impossible to accurately assess this idea commenting on Annabella and
Giovanni as a single entity. They are extremely different characters with their only common ground
being the love they have for each other, and even this is expressed in distinctly different ways with
subsequently different consequences.
These consequences build up to the conclusion referred to in the question, and so it would also
prove hard to answer it directly without having previously discussed what has come before and
created such conclusion.
At the beginning of the play, I believe that the audience is intended to sympathise with Giovanni.
Although his actions are described as

Although this could be seen as disrespecting religious views, the modern day audience would be
more likely to interpret this as showing this love is real and has consumed him to such an extent that
he cannot live without expressing it, and so must try to find a loophole almost, that will allow him to
do this.
This would make the audience sympathise with him, as it seems like a lose lose choice for him; an
eternity of hell if he commits incest, or salvation spiritually, but damnation and loneliness mentally.
Religion at the time of writing was very important and so the approval from the church would have
been seen as necessary before acting on such a desire. A modern day audience may be more likely to
sympathise with
Giovanni, as convenient and politically motivated marriages are a lot less common that in the 17th
centaury with emphasis being on love rather than contacts or money. The audience of the time
however would see incest in a more economic light, as if you were not marrying outside your
family, it would be impossible to gain higher status or a larger state etc. and so disapproval may be a
more likely reaction as the family name and estate would suffer as a result.
I still think that these factors considered, Ford intended to induce sympathy in both audiences. This
is because of the way the other suitors for Annabella are presented, making him the most likeable at
this point. For example, Grimaldi is described as a "lying

The Theme Of Revenge And Love In William Shakespeare's Hamlet
The most tragedy story wrote by William Shakespeare. This story consists on tragedy, revenge and

Characteristics And Mechanisms Of Agrobacterium Tumefaciens
I. Introduction
If I told you there was an organism that can sniff out it's victim, approach it, infect it, and cause
cancer, would you believe it can also genetically modify it's hosts to incorporate beneficial novel
genes? Agrobacterium tumefaciens is an unsung villain/hero that is in fact, capable of such amazing
things. Agrobacteria tumefaciens is a bacterium that parasitizes plant tissue, and causes what is often
referred to as "crown gall"– yet it is more the virally– reminiscent mechanism through which this
occurs than the physical deformity itself that is of interest. Agrobacterium tumefaciens is motile and
utilizes chemo taxis paired with its intrinsic secret weapon– the Ti plasmid– in order to accomplish
gall formation. Not only is the pathogenesis of this bacteria fascinating, but it moreover leaves
scientists with the opportunity to employ certain abilities of A. tumefaciens to engineer crops–
rendering Agrobacterium tumefaciens very integral to modern agriculture, and future research.
However with great power comes great responsibility, and we will see yet, through examining the
characteristics and mechanisms of Agrobacterium tumefaciens whether it is a villain, or a hero!
II. Isolation and Subsequent Culturing Culturing Agrobacterium tumefaciens has been essential in
discovering the full mechanisms of its infection and tumor formation. Moreover, A. tumefaciens can
be isolated from multiple sources including water, soil, and the gall of infected plants

Comparison Of Ambition Vs. Family And Well Being
"Ambition vs Family and Well Being"
Albert Einstein once said, "Nothing truly valuable arises from ambition or from a mere sense of
duty; it stems rather from love and devotion towards men and towards objective things".Albert
Einstein)Ambition maybe the drive for people; however, with too much ambition you can lose time
with your family and can make you unhappy. Ambition causes you to strive to do something or
achieve something, but what happens when you don't; then what are you left with? Surely not
happiness. When you're very ambitious about something, you tend to put all your time into it, so
there's really no time for more important things like your family. For example, in Shakespeare's
Macbeth, he sacrifices his happiness and subconscious to kill someone so he can become the king.
Ambition may get things done; however, in order to do some of those things you have to do
unspeakable things or become dark. "And those whose achievements failed to match their ambitions
lived less happily, and died earlier."(Hume) In this quote from "Not Happy" By Tim Hume it tells
you when you're ambitious about something, and you don't achieve it, you let yourself down which
makes you unhappy.According to "Not Happy" people tend to be less happy or die sooner if they
had high ambition, but it can also cause self pity. "The act of comparison is one of the most hurtful
things you can do to yourself. It either fuels your ambition or dampens it like a soggy campfire. If it

Macbeth and Washizu: the Tragic Heroes
M.H. Abram's description of the tragic hero outlines the main characteristics of a tragic hero. In the
play Macbeth, and film Throne of Blood, Macbeth and Washizu are the main characters that fulfill
the definition of a tragic hero. They implement M.H. Abram's definition of the tragic hero because
they have flaws that lead them to their "reversal of fortune", which cause them to evoke the pity and
fear from the audience. Macbeth and Washizu also demonstrate how they are "better than we are,"
which indicates that they have a higher moral worth that amplifies the tragic effect.
First, Macbeth and Washizu both have a tragic flaw, which leads into their reversal of fortune.

He is truly a character that is "better than we are", a character above the average person in respect to
nobility and praise. Also, as Macbeth and Washizu were born into nobility, they illustrate their
success as they live in castles with many servants and other materialistic objects.
Third, the characters both evoke our "pity and fear." The audience have a sense of pity for them
because neither Washizu nor Macbeth are completely evil characters and they show some good in
them, causing them to be a mix of the two opposites. We feel pity for Washizu when he is killed by
his own men at the end of the movie, because he has allowed his tragic flaw (ambition) to control
himself. Macbeth also evocates fear from the audience in many moments, including while he is
murdering the king. He screams out and says, "Who's there? What ho!" (2.2.8). These words make
the audience think that Macbeth has been caught in the act of murdering the king, which arouses
fear. Once again, Macbeth arouses pity from the audience when he learns that Lady Macbeth has
died. He says, "She should have died herafter/ There would have been a time for such a word"
(5.5.17–18). These words make us pity him, because during the play he says these words with great
sadness, and we feel that he now has no one to support him.
In conclusion, Macbeth and Washizu both fit M.H. Abrams'

Teens, or girls in general read this magazine, and by placing an ad such as this in the magazine
would generally boost sales. Another aspect of this ad that would commonly appeal to the teen age
group would have been the choice of colors, and the background of the advertisement.
As far as background goes, historical background is also relatively important in the relevance of the
TI–83+ silver edition graphing calculator advertisement. Teens have many choices when it comes to
graphing calculators, so that is probably why the author chose to include a feature that not all
calculators have. The phonebook feature would appeal greatly to the viewer, hence its purpose. This
particular feature, the phonebook, would be of importance because in the past no calculator
including all other Texas Instruments calculators has offered such a feature.
The Texas Instruments advertisement also allows the viewer to make assumptions in relation to the
pictures and text displayed on the page. These assumptions could be anything from the approximate
cost of the tool, to the pondering of the ray of colors used in the composition of the calculator itself.
These different conjectures are made due to the actual composition of the advertisement itself.
Then comes the purpose of the advertisement. The advertisement is presented to show the viewer
what a unique tool the TI–83+ silver edition is, and what new features are included in the calculator.

Female Characters Of The Play By William Shakespeare 's '...
First impressions of any play or novel are largely gained from its title. In this case, the title also
happens to be the concluding line of the play itself; " 'Tis Pity She's a Whore" suggests the play is
based around a woman and her promiscuous actions. This instantly places women in a bad light
before the play even commences suggesting that there was a woman in a shameful situation due to
her 'whore' like actions towards men and how things could have been different if she did not allow
her promiscuous side to take over control. This title makes women appear to be inferior to men as if
this would not have happened to a man as they would never have found themselves in a situation
such as this woman has found herself in. There are a vast variety of female characters in the play
with many diverse personality types. Ford writes most of the female characters to be weak and
inferior to men to fit with the Victorian audiences idea of how women were to be perceived –
'powerless and at the mercy of men'. There are also certain female characters such as Putana and
Hippolita who appear to go against the stereotypical idea of how women should act and behave
during the Victorian era, these characters would have been extremely shocking for a 19th century
audience. At the end of the play all of the women die nasty deaths and in all situations are due to
their actions that surround men. They all die or are murdered for different reasons but in all
circumstances involve being misunderstood

Madness and Insanity in Shakespeare's Hamlet Essay
Hamlet – A Question of Madness
Hamlet's public persona is a facade he has created to carry out his ulterior motives. The outside
world's perception of him as being mad is of his own design. Hamlet is deciding what he wants
others to think about him. Polonius, a close confidant of the King, is the leading person responsible
for the public's knowledge of Hamlet's madness. The idea that Hamlet is mad centers around the fact
that he talks to the ghost of his dead father. He communicates with his dead father's ghost twice, in
the presence of his friends and again in the presence of his mother. By being in public when talking
to the ghost, the rumor of his madness is given substance.
Polonius decides to go to Hamlet's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His motivation for this response is that he knows the King and Polonius are eavesdropping on his
conversation. Attempting and succeeding in embarrassing her, he questions Ophelia's virginity. Later
while attending a play with other royalty, Hamlet again questions Ophelia's chastity in another
attempt to humiliate her. This time his assault on her character is in front of a much larger audience.
In both of these instances, Ophelia tries to dismiss Hamlet's insinuations. These two instances also
serve to show Hamlet's irrational behavior, further justifying Polonius' belief that Hamlet's madness
is connected to sex.
Hamlet's madness is not in vain. As Polonius says in Act II, "Though this be madness, yet there is
method in't" (109). The reason Hamlet is pretending to be insane is to exact revenge against his
father's murderer, the King. He is aware that the King will be concerned about his behavior and he is
right. After the play all the characters attend, the King is very disturbed. His reason for being
disturbed is that he just witnessed a play which depicted the murder he committed against his own
brother, the former King of Denmark. The King knows Hamlet knows of the murder and is aware
that Hamlet may not be completely insane. Because he is afraid of losing his power and title of
King, the King decides that Hamlet should go to England.

Ophelia's Disappearance Of Words In Hamlet By William...
Words are some of the most dangerous weapons in the world. Words can be used to deceive people's
appearances. William Shakespeare is wrote many books with appearances deceived by words. An
example of a book by Shakespeare of appearances through words is Hamlet. In the book, Hamlet
must revenge his father death by killing his murderer, the king, Claudius. However, in order to kill
him, Hamlet said that he must act mad; therefore, no one will suspect him. People that Hamlet
convinces that he is crazy is Ophelia, his mother the Queen, and Polonius. Hamlet was able to
deceive them by the way he talked and the way he used his words. Hamlet's mother, Gertrude, is one
of the first and many people that Hamlet convinces that he is truly mad. The reason ... Show more

Ophelia is the daughter of Polonius, and loves Hamlet, therefore, she is one of the first people that
Hamlet convinces that he is mad. When Hamlet first persuades her that he is mad, he convinces her
by not using words. This led to her thinking that he is mad because Hamlet always talks to her.
Therefore, by not speaking to her, Ophelia is concludes that something is wrong. She came to this
conclusion when Hamlet "took [Ophelia] by the wrist and held [her] hard" (2.1.99) and then "raised
a sigh so piteous and profound/As it did seem to shatter all his bulk/ And end his being: that done,
he lets [her] go" (2.1.106–108). This action was so unusual to Ophelia because he would usually talk
to her. As a result, she believes that Hamlet has gone completely mad. As a reaction, she tells her
father Polonius, and convinces him that Hamlet is truly mad. The second example is when Hamlet
confronts Ophelia in a staged meeting made by Claudius and Polonius. During this meeting, Hamlet
starts to "attack" her with words. This confrontation frightens Ophelia so she cries out, "Heavenly
power, restore him!" (3.1.153). When Ophelia said this, it shows that she recognizes that Hamlet is
truly mad, because she asks God to heal him. The reason why she said this is that the appearance
that Hamlet put on, with his words, an appearance of wanting to harm Ophelia. Unfortunately,
Hamlet actually hurts Ophelia because his appearance by his words drew him into attacking her.
This shows that Hamlet's words can manipulate or persuade other people and himself into believing
or doing something. After this confrontation, Ophelia is confident that Hamlet is mad, and Claudius
and Polonius are convinced into believing that Hamlet is mad because of the way he talks to
Ophelia. The reason for this is that Hamlet does not usually talk to Ophelia like this, and will never
hurt her. Therefore, Hamlet's appearance through his words manipulates Claudius and

Why does Macbeth decide to murder Duncan and why is he not satisfied with his high social
position? Because his problem is that he is too ambitious. He wants to become king and he refers to
that yearning as ambition:
I have no spur To prick the sides of my intent, but only Vaulting ambition, which o'erleaps itself And
falls on the other.
Macbeth is fascinated with the idea of being a king but he is also aware of the disastrous price he
will have to pay. He suffers a powerful tension between his desire and his moral sense. But once his
imagination shows him the possibility, he is not able to shrug the desire off. It is one of Lady
Macbeth's functions to keep this vision alive, when she taunts him to act in response to his desires
and urges him to be more of a man. She cannot be blamed for his actions though, as he freely
chooses to kill Duncan, and even before committing the crime he knows what consequences this
deed will bring. At the same time, he cannot live with what he has done and remain the same person.
The killing is continued, bringing even greater suffering on Macbeth as he tries to remove the moral
distress. We witness his gradual dehumanization when he continues to murder in order to get peace
of mind, but instead he loses everything life has to offer:

Speech On Empathy
Have you ever heard the saying that goes "place yourself into the shoes of others"? Let's analyze and
take a deep look into the phrase. By placing ourselves into somebody's shoes we develop a feeling
of connection with them, better known as empathy. The question is, what is empathy? Empathy is
the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. People often confuse empathy with pity,
but it is actually aiming the understanding of people's feelings and perspectives. And by
understanding them we learn how to use them to guide our actions. I believe that in order to change
our society, people should be able to learn how to feel empathy or compassion for others. The Bible
tells us in Romans 12:15 to "Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep."
I believe empathy is formed at home. When we are kids, our parents teach us the golden rule, which
is: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. As we grow older, we are taught that it´s
important to care about people's feelings. We grow up with the idea that we shouldn't only care
about ourselves, but always be concerned for others. In my opinion, everyone should desire ... Show

Even though it seems to be a difficult process, the results would be totally worth it. Step number one
is to cultivate curiosity about strangers. By doing this, we find other people more interesting than
ourselves, decreasing our level of selfishness. Step number two is to challenge prejudices. Our
society is marked with labels. These labels avoid us from appreciating individuality. Instead of
looking for things that divide us, we should be searching for what we have in common and in a way
what unites us. This way, we could get an easy way or path into equality, fairness and sensibility.
Last but not least, we should "listen hard and open up". Listening is not enough, we need to open
our hearts and feelings to create an empathic

and Viola who is disguised as Cesario. Viola disguised herself as Cesario because her boat crashed
and she washed ashore on Illyria, she had been with her brother, but he never washed ashore so she
grieved him and to get over the grievance faster she got a job. But her brother Sebastian wasn't
really dead, he had just washed up on a different nearby island. These two caused the problems
because Olivia is the prettiest lady in the land of Illyria and Cesario was taking Olivia's heart even

Mistaken identity in Twelfth Night causes character's confusion and, in some cases, pain. Confusion
was caused by many things it was caused by people being mislead and people not properly
understanding, but it was mainly caused by people being blinded by love, The Love triangle of
Olivia, loving Cesario, Cesario loves Orsino and Orsino loving Olivia was all caused by them being
blinded by love. This blindness of love caused problems even for those who were in the love
triangle because when Sebastian shows up, he looks exactly like Cesario does and Olivia proposed
to him and he said yes. This shows us how Olivia was blinded by loving Cesario that she didn't even
realize Sebastian wasn't Cesario, and when Orsino found out he was angry at Cesario who was
confused and kept denying it. Then When Sebastian walks into Duke Orsino's court and tells Olivia
that he was sorry being late wife. "I am sorry, madam, I have hurt your

Essay Jilting Of Granny Weatherall
The Jilting of Granny Weatherall In Katherine Ann Porter's "The Jilting of Granny
Weatherall," there are two prevalant themes. The first is self–pity. The second theme is
the acceptance of her immenent demise. Both deal with the way people perceive their deaths and
mortality in general. Granny Weatherall's behavior is Porter's tool for making these themes visible to
the reader. The theme of self–pity is obvious and throughly explored early on. As a young lady,
Granny Weatherall left at the alter on her wedding day . As a result, the pathetic woman feels sorry
for herself for the rest of her life. She becomes a bitter old woman who is suspicious of everyone

calls on a priest to offer Granny her last rights. When the priest arrives, she would not speak to him.
She said, "I went to Holy Communion only last week. Tell him I'm not so sinful as all
that." (1491) As Granny's life was winding down with only minutes remaining, she
finally began to show signs that she accepted what was happening to her. She bagan remembering
those who were important to her and dividing her possesions among family members. Porter shows
a loving side to Granny Weatherall that endears her to the audience before she is wisked away from
the land of the living. It is reminiscint of The Flannery O'Connor story "A Good Man is
Hard to Find." The Misfit has just executed a fast–talking grandmother. One of his evil
cohorts offers that she was "a real talker." The Misfit interjects that
"She would have been a good woman if it had been somebody to shoot her every minute
of her life." So it is with Granny Weatherall, at her best while near the bitter end. The
Jilting of Granny Weatherall gives us a brief overview of mortality. Porter gives us slightly deeper
insight into self pity and the acceptance of death. Granny Weatherall's actions and thoughts give the
reader an idea of how it feels as life draws to a close. Porter suggests that by succeeding in dying

Flaws In Othello Essay
Research Essay: Othello by William Shakespeare
Was Othello a victim of circumstances or his own flaws? by Alijaeh Go 9B4 First performed in the
court of King James I on November 1 1604, The Tragedy of Othello: The Moor of Venice was
written by William Shakespeare between 1601 and 1604. The basic premise of the play is the
protagonist's (Othello's) marriage with the daughter of the senator, Desdemona: Their marriage,
unfortunately, is sabotaged by the envious Iago, insinuating to Othello of his wife's alleged
infidelity. The play reaches its climactic peak when the general's jealousy vows to exact bloody
revenge on the perpetrators (Desdemona and Cassio) that caused him to be a 'cuckold'. All of Iago's
schemes come into fruition when the noble Moor smothers his wife to death: The play spirals further
downhill with most of the cast either dead, severely injured or in Iago's case, on the process to be
tortured. Based from this summary, a mere observer would conclude that the reason for Othello's
downfall is his hamartia – his incessant jealousy that caused for his rash actions. However,
numerous opinions and facts beg to differ; they lead to state that external factors ... Show more

Tis Pity She's A Whore Analysis
Consummation in Epithalamion and 'Tis Pity She's a Whore In his introduction to Petrarchan Love
and the Continental Renaissance, Gordon Braden claims that much of the scholarly conversation on
Petrarchism centers on the "reactions of particular writers to a dominant tradition already in
place...as a kind of agonistic revolt against that heavy inheritance [of the Petrarchan tradition]
(Braden xii). What Braden seeks to accomplish in his scrutiny of these same writers is a
reorientation of the scholarly point of view on the Petrarchan love tradition. Rather than seeing
writers resisting the tradition, Braden suggests that instead there is "a sense of the tradition as
opportunity, a starting point that makes new action both possible and meaningful" ... Show more

Braden sees this capacity for seduction having developed via the kiss's growing presence in
Petrarchan–inspired poetry of the sixteenth century. In some texts, the kiss is one "in which souls are
exchanged without the taint of physical lust, and possibly with that protection they become part of
the expected commerce between lover and lady in almost all Renaissance venues" (108). But as
Braden shows through Pierre de Ronsard, the kiss wished from the beloved could turn from a chaste
kiss–which Ronsard's poet dismisses as "icy"–into one that has "savour in the mouth, or never kiss"
at all (qtd. in Braden 108–109). This transformation from chaste/unconsummated love into more
erotic poems is a subject on which Philip Sidney later complains in his Defence of Poesy, arguing
that the once–virtuous love poems have become "larded with passionate Sonnets" intended to seduce

Fallacies And The Argumentum Ad Populum By Donald Trump
Fallacies are the mistakes made in an argument or the irrational reasoning, while one party tries to
prove a point to benefit their side of the argument. Throughout the final presidential debate of 2016
multiple fallacies were found from both sides of the party, but were more strongly evident from the
republican nominee Donald Trump. Fallacies should be avoided in order to deliver a successful
argument. However, this debate was plagued with fallacies that made the argument baseless and
illogical. One of the most prominent fallacies found in the debate was the "Argumentum Ad
Populum". There are different approaches to this fallacy, but the one that Trump used was the
patriotic approach. This consists of arguing that one side of the debate ... Show more content on

This is fallacious statement glamorizes his side of the argument by making it seem that since it was
the most patriotic it had to also had to be the correct side of the debate.
Trump later makes another fallacious statement when asked on his opinion about late–term, partial–
birth abortions. He claimed that it was "not OK" because "you can take the baby and rip the baby
out of the womb of the mother just prior to the birth of the baby" he repeated this statement not long
after, but added that one of the possibilities could be that "you can take the baby and rip the baby out
of the womb in the ninth month on the final day." This fallacy falls under "Argumentum Ad
Misericordiam" which uses emotion to prove a point instead of using irrefutable facts. By using
words like "rip" and making up a hypothetical situation of one possibilities of late–term abortions he
is avoiding a concrete argument. He makes the audience feel that it is incorrect to be pro–choice
because of one potential situation. He avoids discussing factors that contribute to the decisions on
abortion such as the health of the mother. This fallacy uses pathos to appeal to the audience and
make them feel guilty.
Clinton also uses this same fallacy by stating that she has met women that have had medical
emergencies regarding their health throughout the pregnancy and have had to make "one of the
worst possible choices". Although, health is a rational argument

It does this by people dragging you around by tricking you into thinking something that's not true.
This happens in Twelfth Night when Maria writes a letter to Malvolio pretending she is Olivia and
since her handwriting is very similar to Olivia's and Malvolio is in love with Olivia he believes the
letter. The reason Maria wrote the letter is that Malvolia has been rude and mean to the staff so she
decides to play a prank on him by writing the letter "If this fall into thy hand, revolve. In my stars I
am above thee, but be not afraid of greatness some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some
have greatness thrust upon 'em. Thy fates open their hands. Let thy blood and spirit embrace them."
(2.5.147–151). This is the beginning of the letter it continues on saying that she loves him and that if
he loves her back he must wear yellow stockings and they must be cross gartered which means they
have to wear ribbons tied around the knees. It also said that he had to smile all the time and be
extremely rude to the staff. This all started because Maria decided to mislead him by making him

The Importance Of Protests In Advertising
Advertisers utilize popular culture and current events to sell their products all of the time. The topic
of protests has made the rounds among news stories. Hearing about protests and rallies is not out of
the norm. The news includes numerous stories about organized protests and the violence that can
occur as a result of them. After viewing Pepsi's Kendall Jenner commercial, it is obvious that Pepsi
drew its inspiration from these events. The most important moment in the commercial is when
Jenner hands a Pepsi to a police officer; He smiles and the crowd cheers. This moment is also the
most controversial scene of the entire commercial. Many people believe that the commercial is in
"bad taste" and that it makes light of a serious situation. According to Wired, "The message is clear:
All those women's marches, Black Lives Matter protests, and demonstrations outside Trump Tower
would be much more effervescent–and effective!–if someone had just brought some soda"
(Watercutter). Pepsi appeals to viewers via logos through logical fallacies. Specifically, they are
using emotion, authority, and popularity to sell their soda. Pepsi appeals to emotion by making a
protest a focal point of the commercial. Typically, anger and gladness drive protestors. The point of
protesting is to voice an opinion and promote change. Protesters are angry that they have an
unresolved issue, but glad that they are surrounded by like minded people. In America today,
protests are all over the news.

Analysis Of ' Tis Pity She 's A Whore '
We admire disobedience and defiance in the face of the inevitable.
In " 'Tis pity she's a whore" John Ford portrays a corrupt Parmesan society in which two siblings are
defying the conventions of the world they are leaving in for a chance for their incesteus love to
exist. From the beginning of the play Giovanni and Annabella's love story line seems to be
following the conventional formula, however we are constantly reminded that it is anything but
alike conventional. Both protagonists are disobeying society's conventions, going against morality,
nature, religion and culture.
Throughout the play Ford is constantly keeping the audience in a state of confusion and uncertainty
of weather we sympathies with the tragic lovers or we are disgusted by the incesteus nature of their
relationship: "O, Annabella, I am quite undone: the love of thee, my sister, and the view of thy
immortal beauty hath untuned all harmony both of my rest and life". Ford uses the conventional love
language and imagery, which for a moment tempts the audience to disregard the unnaturalness of
their love and apply the conventional innocence of two lovers on it: "On my knees, brother, even by
our mother's dust, I charge you, do not betray me to your mirth or hate; love me or kill me,
brother."–Annabella and Giovanni announce their love to the audience giving wedding–like vows to
each other, however the audience cannot overlook that Giovanni and Annabella demonstrate the
awareness of the forbidden nature of

Whore?
Representations of sexuality in Early Modern literature reveal a variety of attitudes, but they can be
characterised by the ambivalence which they display towards the subject of desire and its
consequences for the self. The destructive potential of desire is revealed in John Ford's Tis Pity She's
A Whore, widely considered to be one of the most radical works of Jacobean theatre, not only for its
frank and nuanced portrayal of incest, but for its reworking of the theme of ill–fated love from
Romeo and Juliet into a dark rumination on the fundamental incommunicability of desire and the
impossibility of mutual understanding.

Her tut'ress Putana draws attention to her lack of agency in the matter, to her status as mere object in
a society which valued economic necessity and kinship ties over affection: 'you'll be stolen away
sleeping else shortly' (I.2.70.). Annabella's response: 'such a life gives no content to me' (I.2.71–2)
indicates her wish to avoid this system entirely, which the prospect of a mutually loving relationship
with Giovanni seems to offer. When Soranzo interrogates her on the father of her child, as Lisa
Hopkins has pointed out, she compares her unborn child to the immaculate conception, and by
inference herself to the Virgin Mary, describing Giovanni as 'angel–like' and worthy of 'true
worship'(IV.3.37–41)[10]. While she takes pleasure in teasing Soranzo here, her real intent is to
express the communion which she feels in her relationship with Giovanni that the strictures of
conventional marriage cannot offer. Susannah Mintz writes: 'the fact that Annabella and Giovanni
occupy unequal social positions...suggests that their motivations toward incest may also be
different'[11]. The very different ways in which the two characters are constructed by society
inescapably shapes their desire as much as their desire shapes them.
Annabella's expectations for her incestuous relationship are no more evident than in the moment,
when, following a long period of separation,

What Does It Mean To Be Broken In Hamlet
Reputation is the only thing left of a person after passing. The memories one leaves with others
define someone after death. This concept would explain why having a purpose, the ritual of death,
and sharing stories matter. In Hamlet, William Shakespeare questions the value of life and the
importance of the individual. He argues that a singular being ultimately does not matter unless their
story is shared. A person who cannot find meaning in life, or cannot live up to what is expected of
them, will struggle to make decisions. In other words, "If you lose your purpose... it's like you're
broken" (Selznick 374). The infamous scene where Hamlet splits his conscience in debating

Twelve Angry Men By Reginald Rose
Through Twelve Angry Men Flim, the author, Reginald Rose, paints a picture of a small portion of
American society in the mid–1950s. At this time, the United States was envolving into an internal
struggle, the Civil Rights Movement, which was concerned with ending racism discrimination and
promoting freedom, respect and equality. Rose's movie presents domestic conflicts which exist in a
stereotypical American society and politic in 1950s in America. 12 Angry Men is the story of 12
jurors who must decide if a boy is guilty or not guilty of killing his father. It takes place in New
York City Court of Law jury room where 12 jurors must come a unanimous conclusion. A great deal
of logical fallacies were presented by jurrors in attempt to prove that the defendent as guilty. One of
most obvious fallacy that is committed in the 12 Angry Men is the hasty generalization fallacy. This
fallacy is committed when a person draws a conclusion about a population based on a sample that is
not large enough. In the 12 Anfry Men, this logical fallacy is made by the tenth juror, E.G Marshell.
He supports his argument, " That's boy was born in street, everyone in that street does those thing."
He assumes that the boy committed the crime because the town that he was born where has the
reputation of commiting crime. He is making a form of prejudice called stereotyping because he is
making an unwarranted generalization about people who are the same race, Hispanic, as the boy.. It

Queen Elizabeth and Annabella in "Tis Pity She's a Whore" by John Ford Annabella, the female
protagonist in John Ford's play, 'Tis Pity She's a Whore, ultimately dies after trying to meet the
conflicting demands that her brother and father place on her. While her brother, Giovanni,
commands her to be his clandestine lover, her father, Florio, expects her to marry a socially
appropriate man and bear a child. These demands closely resemble the real–life demands that Queen

Giovanni hints at a similar tension within himself when he tells Annabella, "I envy not the mightiest
man alive, / But hold myself in being king of thee / More great than were I king of all the world"
(2.1.18–20). Ruling over and taking command of Annabella's body is the only type of monarchy that
interests him, and in an effort to achieve this goal, he uses "[t]he conventions of courtly love poetry,
with its chaste, unattainable, superior woman, desired and sought by an admiring, subservient,
faithful male suitor, [which] were especially appropriate for articulating complex relationships
between Queen Elizabeth and the ambitious courtiers seeking her favors" (Guibbory 814).
Confessing his love to Annabella through courtly love poetry, Giovanni says: The poets feign, I
read, That Juno for her forehead did exceed All other goddesses: but I durst swear Your forehead
exceeds hers, as hers did theirs. (1.2.186–189) Like Elizabeth, Annabella enjoys listening to the
poetic praise and replies, "Troth, this is pretty" (1.2.190). Moreover, the praise itself is strikingly
similar to praise of Elizabeth "in what Roy Strong identifies as 'the earliest of the allegorical

Fate And Free Will In Shakespeare's Hamlet
In the moment before the fight against Laertes, Hamlet becomes resolute as he simply accepts
whatever fate should befall him. He takes a stance in going against the superstitions and predictions
of the future, "augury", just as the harbinger Horatio senses and warns him right before. Even now,
Hamlet remains true as an agent of Christian providence since he believes that God has control over
all occurrences in the world, including those most trivial. He then voices the next few lines in sharp
yet simple repetition, that is, his death will either happen momentarily or eventually. This induces a
dramatic effect of consolidation as one can imagine these lines,"If it be now, 'tis not to come. If it be
not to come, it will be now. If it be not now, yet it will come" in a most clear and quick projection. It

The meaning follows suit, Hamlet argues that the mindset and being prepared is important in
approaching his fate. However, as shown in Hamlet's swift and forthright manner of speech, some
would agree that he now truly portrays a tragic hero. Further, we could pity him for finally releasing
himself from all vacillation and apparent madness, albeit only before his immediate downfall.
Hamlet's last notion challenges the idea of the tragedy in dying young, or to "leave betimes". He
comments that since no person would know the legacy they could leave behind or the future they
will miss, what does dying early mean to the person? Such a thought does not usually cross the mind
of an ordinary prince, yet for the final time we have seen the wise and philosophical Hamlet. All in
all, the last two brief words uttered by Hamlet are most significant. The Hamlet who says "Let be" is
no where the same or comparable to the mad, diseased and melancholic Hamlet who had reigned for
most of the play. It is indeed a transformation, through a haphazard but an also sentimental

Aristotelian Ideal Of Propriety In Hamlet
To continue, "[Hamlet is] loved of the distracted multitude" (4.3.4). He is assumed to be a
charismatic and noble prince. However, his character is completely different from what is expected,
breaking the Aristotelian ideal of propriety. Hamlet is supposed to behave nobly and gentlemanly.
On the contrary, Hamlet often sprouts sexual innuendos and offhanded remarks. For example,
during the play in a play, Hamlet's behavior towards Ophelia can be described as childish at best. He
lets out a torrent of offensive sexual remarks, even saying "it would cost you a groaning to take off

prince. Moreover, anyone raised from nobility should have a clear sense of honor and ... Show more

Hamlet simply erases his values on honor and adopts Fortinbras's ideals. Hamlet is not true to
himself in the sense that he never seems to fight for his own ideals. When Hamlet attempts to rectify
his mother's adultery, he gets a terse warning from King Hamlet and simply acquiesces to his
requests. Hamlet is also not consistent about his own ideals in morality. Throughout the play,
Hamlet broods and contemplates what the afterlife holds for him: "To die, to sleep – / To sleep,
perchance to dream – ay, there's the rub, / For in this sleep of death what dreams may come". Yet
after he murders Polonius and causes Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to be executed, he suddenly
loses his fear of the uncertainty of the afterlife (3.1.65–68). When he accepts Laertes's request to a
duel, he speaks to the fact that man should be ready to die because fate is inexorable:
"Not a whit. We defy augury. There's a special providence in the fall of a sparrow. If it be now, 'tis
not to come. If it be not to come, it will be now. If it be not now, yet it will come–the readiness is all.
Since no man of aught he leaves knows, what is 't to leave betimes? Let be." (5.2.197 –

The play Macbeth, composed by William Shakespeare in 1606, can be considered as a tragedy when
feelings of sympathy for a character who becomes increasingly ambitious and when a character is

By making Macbeth's first impression on the audience to be an honest and trustworthy soldier in the
sense that he admits his own flaws and guarantees Duncan's safety through his own sense of
morality, Shakespeare creates room for sympathy when Macbeth loses these attributes through
external pressure. Lady Macbeth's attempt at persuading Macbeth to murder Duncan by mocking his
manhood, "Wouldst thou have that Which thou esteem'st the ornament of life, And live a coward in
thine own esteem" demonstrates how she sways Macbeth into making him believe what he wants to
believe, that is, wanting to take the throne. With the aid of inclusive language, 'thou esteem'st' to',
and insinuated emasculation, 'And live a coward in thine own esteem', Lady Macbeth pressurises
and strips Macbeth of his moral and loyal characteristics, imposing unrequested acts of ambition
onto him. Accordingly, with Macbeth being pressured by his own foresight and obliged to comply
with the expectations of his wife into committing to something that he was once against, audiences
can understand to a certain degree the distress that Macbeth is going through. Therefore, with the

Review Of ' The Jati '

The Jati
Thousands of years ago in Asia, a book was written that gave social structure that would go on
through the ages in India. Today that social structure is called the Jati or in English words, the Caste
system. While it has undergone a few changes here and there, the system has relatively been
unchanged and just like thousands of years ago when it was first introduced in the Vedas, it exists in
modern day India as a part of society in it. This paper will go over a more detailed explanation of the
Jati as well as the classes and books that defined the Jati system, most notably the "Laws of Mandu".
Jati translates to "caste" so in English it is called the Caste system. In the Jati system there are four
main castes one falls under: Shudra, Viasya, Kshatryia and Bhramin. Outside of the caste system are
the outcasts or also called untouchables. Within these main four castes there are thousands of
subcastes a group of people will fall under. One important thing to note where unlike most social
classes of ancient time, in the Jati system, it is possible to move up in the caste. While a subcaste
may not move up as an individually, the entire group can move up. So while there is subcaste A and
subcaste B. While Subcaste B is currently higher up on the caste it is possibly for subcaste A as a
whole to move up above subcaste B. This is the beauty of the Jati system, groups are not
permanently logged into one place

Values in Pindar Essay
Values in Pindar
Pindar was composing his poetry at the start of the fifth century B.C. at a similar time to Aeschylus,
and as much as three centuries after the completion of Homer's works. The values he displays,
however, do not seem to have developed since the time of Homer; Pindar's ethics are those of a
shame–culture, and in this way thoroughly Homeric. They are aristocratic, favouring the strong,
powerful ruler over the weak and dominated. Wealth and prosperity are praised, not frowned upon.
Nietzsche approved of Pindar's praise of the strong, be they tyrants or athletes (or indeed both), and
conversely disapproved of the way Socrates later denied the good to be had in strength and power. ...

Pindar states that there is a something "greater than wealth", a glory that surpasses all things

Pindar the wealth that comes from victory is not itself the source of joy: the joy is external.
Furthermore, while Pindar does not scorn wealth and the aristocracy, he does see greed and over–

Louis Riel is one of the most controversial figure. His perspective on how he dealt with manner is
still debated today. A key aspect discussed today is why Riel is a hero to his people; the Métis. Louis

Moreover, the government's insufficiency caused Riel to act accordingly. Earlier, it was mentioned
that the Canadian government was not authorized to take legal action until December of 1869.
Though this was clearly recognized by the government, they sent surveyors in June of 1869 for
settlers to live there. The government broke their own laws, hence it proves that Riel, due to the
government's flawed intentions, had to enforce his rule, by stepping on the chains. Unit Two: The
Development of Western Canada, on page 36 highlights that in 1882, surveyors came to the Métis
peoples North–West Settlements to examine the land once more. The Métis acted quickly and sent
15 petitions to the Canadian government for the rights of their land, none of which were answered.
Once again, the government was incapable. The government could have prevented all the troubles,
but due to their insufficiency and flawed system, they let the surveyors come onto the land. In
addition to this, the government had signed many treaties with the Métis. But, the government, yet
again, didn't keep their word and didn't follow the laws of giving them what the treaties had

Why Is Othello A Tragic Hero
There is no denying that Shakespeare is a definitive playwright. He has presented us with classic
works that have set the precedent for drama and the theatre. Among Shakespeare's more notable
plays are his tragedies. In the tragedy his protagonists are often given flaws in their character and
hence, are suitably named tragic heroes. The downfall of these protagonists is often a result of their
own character flaws and unfortunately, they suffer a doomed and unhappy ending. While the tragic
hero is flawed they must also be honorable and worthy of the audience's understanding and
sympathy. On a quest for righteousness the tragic hero often goes through immense suffering which
is why the audience can feel bad for him. For the most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The traits of the tragic hero lead the audience to feel compassion for the helpless victim. However,
for Othello this is not the case. His demise was of his own doing. The moment he showed violence
towards Desdemona, the audience lost interest in comforting Othello. Instead, they blame him for
his own ultimate ruin. It is hard for an audience to sympathize with anger and Othello has given
them much to handle. However, they still need to release the negative feelings that have built up
over the culmination of the play. Unfortunately, for Othello's audience that catharsis will not happen.
On the other hand, it does happen for Othello. Othello's release happens when he lashes out at his
wife, Desdemona. Othello has chosen others over the one he promised to love and protect. Here we
can see his quest for vengeance is so strong that he loses any comfort from the hearers:
Now do I see 'tis true. Look here, Iago, All my fond love thus do I blow to heaven.
'Tis gone. Arise, black vengeance, from the hollow hell! Yield up, O love, thy crown and hearted
throne To tyrannous hate! Swell, bosom, with thy fraught, For 'tis of aspics' tongues!
(III. III, 20)
This vicious search for revenge does not bode well for Othello. The core of Shakespeare's tragedies
is death. However, according to Pr. Lhousain Simour this cannot be just any death. "A tale of
suffering and calamity conducting to a disastrous ending; a tale of a man worn to death on

Hamlet Vs Gertrude Research Paper
Kaylee Finnegan
Mrs. Coughlin
English Composition I
1/2/17
Hamlet vs. Gertrude:
Hamlet is one of the most well–known plays of William Shakespeare's. Anyone who has read the
play knows that the plot has so many twists and turns that make it such an intriguing story. It begins
with Hamlet being upset after his father dies of poison. Queen Gertrude, his mother, remarries quite
quickly to Claudius, Hamlet's uncle. Queen Gertrude doesn't know that Claudius killed her original
husband, but Hamlet assumes that she knows about the murder and that she remarried simply for
sexual desire, which isn't the case. Hamlet's love for his mother quickly turns to hate because she is
so innocent about the situation; he thinks she is pretending to not know. The increasing failure in
relationships fuels Hamlet to plan revenge on King Claudius. He has to continually adjust his plan
throughout the story when Claudius tries to get rid of him. Hamlet becomes so focused on plotting
revenge on Claudius that he doesn't even notice that he abuses his mother's love for him and it ends
up killing them both in the end.
Hamlet and Gertrude are different in their personality types. According to Keirsey's temperament
sorter, There are four main types of personality temperaments–Guardians, Artisans, ... Show more

Being "good at planning operations" (Keirsey 199) is a major Rational–Mastermind characteristic.
Hamlet assures his real father he will get revenge on Claudius (I.v.199). INTJ's stick to their word;
they are loyal (Keirsey 201)."So, uncle, there you are. Now to my word: / It is 'Adieu, adieu.
Remember me.'/ I have sworn 't." (I.v.116–117). Hamlet swears he will get revenge on Claudius, and
he does so in memory of his father. This is his main motive during the story. It drives him to forget
about any emotions but those of hate towards the

Definition Essay About Failure
Failure. It's something everyone goes through at one point or another. It's that big test you studied
for, that internship you wanted more than anything else, or the denial from that one person you
really hope would say yes to a date. It's happened to all of us. But, it's how we choose to look at all
of our failures that really defines who we are as a person.
I believe we all need to fail. When we continually succeed, it's a great feeling and we can ride that
wave for as long as possible, but eventually it will end and instead the wave of reality will hit hard.
I'm a firm believer that failure needs to be taught. I'm not saying that you need to learn how to fail,
but rather learn how to cope with failure. If you learn to cope with failure in a healthy way, you can
easily benefit from it and it can help you become a better person. However, if you don't learn how to
cope with your ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When you look at young children, they always seem so carefree, and fearless. Well, that's because
they are. They aren't afraid to climb that thirty foot tall tree in their backyard and they aren't afraid to
cannonball into the lake, because they know that if they do stumble or fall they can easily get back
up and keep going. Some children cry, and parents will soothe them telling that it's okay and that
everything is alright. When these children grow up, the tall trees turn into grades, internships,
relationships, competitions, etc., but that doesn't mean that the soothing and advice should stop.
When the acceptance of failure is not only taught, but also practiced, the person who has done the
failing is more likely to get back up and try again. I admire those who have continued to fail,
change, and continue to try towards their goals. By failing, you can develop acceptance,
determination, open–mindedness, and the chance to become a more humble

Social Expectations Of Love

  • 1. Social Expectations Of Love Love is not a concept easily defined to its fullest capacity. It has been personified, resented, and over exaggerated throughout the history of drama and has left readers on the edge of their seats as plots unfold. With love, there are no set guidelines or feelings that can go along with a person's actions, but there are societal expectations that cause a couple a great deal of misery if their love does not fit within them. Renaissance dramas often broke through these expectations to challenge the way people viewed and thought about love. Love is portrayed as a means for freedom, a lustful exchange, and a reward for not following social expectations in the plays The Duchess of Malfi, 'Tis a Pity She's a Whore, and The Shoemaker's Holiday proving that it is an aloof social construct with a range of meanings. In the play The Duchess of Malfi, love is a means of keeping an acquired freedom. For the title character, the Duchess, she earned a peculiar freedom when her first husband died. She gained his political power and essentially her own freedom. In the beginning of the play, her brothers, the Cardinal and Ferdinand, threaten this freedom by all but forbidding her to remarry: "Marry? They are most luxurious/Will wed twice" (Webster, John. 1.1.299–300). The margins tell us that "Luxurious", in this case, means lecherous, suggesting to The Duchess that this would be her if she were to remarry. Ferdinand's insistence the remarriage is a bad idea is for two reasons. One, he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Winter's Tale By William Shakespeare In the play The Winter's Tale by William Shakespeare, exists two different types of characters: dynamic characters, meaning characters who change throughout the play by learning and growing through their experiences, and static characters, meaning characters that stagnate from the beginning to end. In particular, the most dynamic character in the play is King Leontes of Sicilia. In the beginning, Leontes believes in the self–assumed belief that his wife, Queen Hermione, is having affairs with his childhood friend, King Polixenes of Bohemia. This belief was conspired by Leontes when he requested Hermione to convince Polixenes to prolong his visit in Sicilia after he himself had failed. When she did succeed, Leontes became "diseased" with jealousy and came to the assumption that Hermione and Polixenes have a "special" relationship together. With the authorial power he possesses as king, he sentenced his pregnant wife to prison for adultery. Though Hermione persists that he is wrong and there is a misunderstanding, Leontes, however, denies everything she says. In this, Leontes is seen as a stubborn tyrant who abuses his divine power as king to treat his wife as a lower being. He denies her right to speak and punishes her severely. Leontes says: You, my lords, Look on her, mark her well; be but about To say 'she is a goodly lady, ' and The justice of your hearts will thereto add 'Tis pity she 's not honest, honourable: ' Praise her but for this her without– door form, ... • 3. The Caterpillar Poem Analysis The Caterpillar: Pillar of Thought The Caterpillar is a poem which focuses on the previously overlooked actions some of us may partake in, that may not be thought much of, but have short and long lasting effects on a scale we might not be very familiar with. Do we feel remorse for living organisms on a small macroscopic level, or is it just an insignificant part of our complex lives? Is the appreciation of life developed through experiences? Do we feel more pity for a single being that has been through trauma than we do for thousands that have not? In this poem, the conflict between caterpillars and humans is discussed in a such a way that brings up questions about how valuable we perceive other life to be, and how different ... One side of them is wanting to slaughter the caterpillars and another is wanting to show mercy and provide protection. The speaker is contemplating whether or not to continue on with their past ways in persecution of caterpillars, or to realize what impact their actions had on the caterpillars. When the speaker mentions, " Where, folded in their silken webs they lay/ Thriving and happy; swept from the tree/ And crushed whole families beneath my foot"(Barbauld 19–20), they are coming to a realization that just like humans, caterpillars have families too and they attempt to strive and prosper in their community; until an unwanted person comes by and ruins their work and kills their family with their foot. When the speaker mentions virtue in, " Tis not Virtue,/ Yet tis the weakness of a virtuous mind."(Barbauld 41–42) I believe they are talking about how it is not goodness that made them help the caterpillar, but it is the self–centeredness of human beings that drove the behaviour. Wanting to right a wrong is common in humans and perhaps the speaker felt that they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Theme Of Appearance Vs Reality In Hamlet In certain instances, there is more than you can see to a story. Countless amounts of people leave out specific details or a back story to hide their own faults. Many characters illustrate the theme of appearance versus reality in the play of Hamlet by Shakespeare by lying and creating facades to hide their plans. Hamlet, Claudius, Rosencrantz, and Guildenstern, all represent the equivocation presented in the play. The characters in Hamlet are deceitful. The Prince of Denmark is extremely misleading in the actions he takes and words he says. One of the largest prevarications Hamlet acts out is acting completely insane. In reality, Hamlet is really just acting. He says to Horatio, 'How strange or odd some'er I bear myself / (As I perchance hereafter shall think meet / To put an antic disposition on)," ... • 5. Examples Of Suffering In King Lear Suffering can come in a variety of different forms. The suffering in King Lear is severe as well as being so violent that many characters are driven beyond their limits of endurance. Gloucester, Cordelia, and Lear are pushed to their breaking points by an unlikely enforcer. In Shakespeare's King Lear, the infliction of pain and suffering is used in order to balance the good and the evil that we experience in the world. First of all, the most popular forms of suffering are through physical torture or mind games that make people lose their sanity. In "Gloucester's case," he suffered physically more than anything. • 6. Tis Pity She's A Whore by John Ford Essay "Tis Pity She's A Whore" by John Ford In this play it would be impossible to accurately assess this idea commenting on Annabella and Giovanni as a single entity. This would make the audience sympathise with him, as it seems like a lose lose choice for him; an eternity of hell if he commits incest, or salvation spiritually, but damnation and loneliness mentally. Religion at the time of writing was very important and so the approval from the church would have been seen as necessary before acting on such a desire. A modern day audience may be more likely to sympathise with Giovanni, as convenient and politically motivated marriages are a lot less common that in the 17th centaury with emphasis being on love rather than contacts or money. The audience of the time however would see incest in a more economic light, as if you were not marrying outside your family, it would be impossible to gain higher status or a larger state etc. and so disapproval may be a more likely reaction as the family name and estate would suffer as a result. I still think that these factors considered, Ford intended to induce sympathy in both audiences. Countless amounts of people leave out specific details or a back story to hide their own faults. Hamlet, Claudius, Rosencrantz, and Guildenstern, all represent the equivocation presented in the play. The characters in Hamlet are deceitful. Introduction If I told you there was an organism that can sniff out it's victim, approach it, infect it, and cause cancer, would you believe it can also genetically modify it's hosts to incorporate beneficial novel genes? Agrobacterium tumefaciens is an unsung villain/hero that is in fact, capable of such amazing things. Agrobacteria tumefaciens is a bacterium that parasitizes plant tissue, and causes what is often referred to as "crown gall"– yet it is more the virally– reminiscent mechanism through which this occurs than the physical deformity itself that is of interest. Agrobacterium tumefaciens is motile and utilizes chemo taxis paired with its intrinsic secret weapon– the Ti plasmid– in order to accomplish gall formation. Not only is the pathogenesis of this bacteria fascinating, but it moreover leaves scientists with the opportunity to employ certain abilities of A. tumefaciens to engineer crops– rendering Agrobacterium tumefaciens very integral to modern agriculture, and future research. Family And Well Being "Ambition vs Family and Well Being" Albert Einstein once said, "Nothing truly valuable arises from ambition or from a mere sense of duty; it stems rather from love and devotion towards men and towards objective things".Albert Einstein)Ambition maybe the drive for people; however, with too much ambition you can lose time with your family and can make you unhappy. Ambition causes you to strive to do something or achieve something, but what happens when you don't; then what are you left with? Surely not happiness. When you're very ambitious about something, you tend to put all your time into it, so there's really no time for more important things like your family. For example, in Shakespeare's Macbeth, he sacrifices his happiness and subconscious to kill someone so he can become the king. Ambition may get things done; however, in order to do some of those things you have to do unspeakable things or become dark. "And those whose achievements failed to match their ambitions lived less happily, and died earlier."(Hume) In this quote from "Not Happy" By Tim Hume it tells you when you're ambitious about something, and you don't achieve it, you let yourself down which makes you unhappy.According to "Not Happy" people tend to be less happy or die sooner if they had high ambition, but it can also cause self pity. The audience have a sense of pity for them because neither Washizu nor Macbeth are completely evil characters and they show some good in them, causing them to be a mix of the two opposites. We feel pity for Washizu when he is killed by his own men at the end of the movie, because he has allowed his tragic flaw (ambition) to control himself. Macbeth also evocates fear from the audience in many moments, including while he is murdering the king. He screams out and says, "Who's there? What ho!" (2.2.8). In this case, the title also happens to be the concluding line of the play itself; " 'Tis Pity She's a Whore" suggests the play is based around a woman and her promiscuous actions. This instantly places women in a bad light before the play even commences suggesting that there was a woman in a shameful situation due to her 'whore' like actions towards men and how things could have been different if she did not allow her promiscuous side to take over control. This title makes women appear to be inferior to men as if this would not have happened to a man as they would never have found themselves in a situation such as this woman has found herself in. There are a vast variety of female characters in the play with many diverse personality types. Ford writes most of the female characters to be weak and inferior to men to fit with the Victorian audiences idea of how women were to be perceived – 'powerless and at the mercy of men'. There are also certain female characters such as Putana and Hippolita who appear to go against the stereotypical idea of how women should act and behave during the Victorian era, these characters would have been extremely shocking for a 19th century audience. Polonius, a close confidant of the King, is the leading person responsible for the public's knowledge of Hamlet's madness. The idea that Hamlet is mad centers around the fact that he talks to the ghost of his dead father. This time his assault on her character is in front of a much larger audience. In both of these instances, Ophelia tries to dismiss Hamlet's insinuations. These two instances also serve to show Hamlet's irrational behavior, further justifying Polonius' belief that Hamlet's madness is connected to sex. Hamlet's madness is not in vain. As Polonius says in Act II, "Though this be madness, yet there is method in't" (109). The reason Hamlet is pretending to be insane is to exact revenge against his father's murderer, the King. He is aware that the King will be concerned about his behavior and he is right. After the play all the characters attend, the King is very disturbed. His reason for being disturbed is that he just witnessed a play which depicted the murder he committed against his own brother, the former King of Denmark. Ophelia is the daughter of Polonius, and loves Hamlet, therefore, she is one of the first people that Hamlet convinces that he is mad. When Hamlet first persuades her that he is mad, he convinces her by not using words. This led to her thinking that he is mad because Hamlet always talks to her. Therefore, by not speaking to her, Ophelia is concludes that something is wrong. She came to this conclusion when Hamlet "took [Ophelia] by the wrist and held [her] hard" (2.1.99) and then "raised a sigh so piteous and profound/As it did seem to shatter all his bulk/ And end his being: that done, he lets [her] go" (2.1.106–108). This action was so unusual to Ophelia because he would usually talk to her. As a result, she believes that Hamlet has gone completely mad. As a reaction, she tells her father Polonius, and convinces him that Hamlet is truly mad. The second example is when Hamlet confronts Ophelia in a staged meeting made by Claudius and Polonius. During this meeting, Hamlet starts to "attack" her with words. This confrontation frightens Ophelia so she cries out, "Heavenly power, restore him!" (3.1.153). When Ophelia said this, it shows that she recognizes that Hamlet is truly mad, because she asks God to heal him. The reason why she said this is that the appearance that Hamlet put on, with his words, an appearance of wanting to harm Ophelia. Unfortunately, Hamlet actually hurts Ophelia because his appearance by his words drew him into attacking her. This shows that Hamlet's words can manipulate or persuade other people and himself into believing or doing something. After this confrontation, Ophelia is confident that Hamlet is mad, and Claudius and Polonius are convinced into believing that Hamlet is mad because of the way he talks to Ophelia. By placing ourselves into somebody's shoes we develop a feeling of connection with them, better known as empathy. The question is, what is empathy? Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. People often confuse empathy with pity, but it is actually aiming the understanding of people's feelings and perspectives. And by understanding them we learn how to use them to guide our actions. I believe that in order to change our society, people should be able to learn how to feel empathy or compassion for others. The Bible tells us in Romans 12:15 to "Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep." I believe empathy is formed at home. What Braden seeks to accomplish in his scrutiny of these same writers is a reorientation of the scholarly point of view on the Petrarchan love tradition. • 24. Identity In Twelfth Night The play Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare shows us how mistaken identity can affect people in many ways. Two main characters, Olivia and Viola, disguised as Cesario, caused this confusion. Viola and her brother Sebastian were on a boat that crashed. Viola washed upon the shore of Illyria and thought her brother dead, but Sebastian wasn't really dead, he had just washed up on a different nearby island. Wanting a job, Viola disguised herself as a man named Cesario, and Olivia fell in love with "him". Eventually Viola's brother came to Illyria, which caused confusion to everyone because Sebastian looked just like Cesario. This happens in Twelfth Night when Maria writes a letter to Malvolio pretending she is Olivia and since her handwriting is very similar to Olivia's and Malvolio is in love with Olivia he believes the letter. The reason Maria wrote the letter is that Malvolia has been rude and mean to the staff so she decides to play a prank on him by writing the letter "If this fall into thy hand, revolve. In my stars I am above thee, but be not afraid of greatness some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon 'em. Thy fates open their hands. Let thy blood and spirit embrace them." (2.5.147–151). This is the beginning of the letter it continues on saying that she loves him and that if he loves her back he must wear yellow stockings and they must be cross gartered which means they have to wear ribbons tied around the knees. It also said that he had to smile all the time and be extremely rude to the staff. This all started because Maria decided to mislead him by making him think it was from Olivia, And it all ended with everyone thinking he was insane so they locked him up in a dark room and even then Maria with two others tried to trick him into thinking he was insane himself. • 25. The Importance Of Protests In Advertising Advertisers utilize popular culture and current events to sell their products all of the time. The topic of protests has made the rounds among news stories. Hearing about protests and rallies is not out of the norm. The news includes numerous stories about organized protests and the violence that can occur as a result of them. After viewing Pepsi's Kendall Jenner commercial, it is obvious that Pepsi drew its inspiration from these events. The most important moment in the commercial is when Jenner hands a Pepsi to a police officer; He smiles and the crowd cheers. This moment is also the most controversial scene of the entire commercial. Many people believe that the commercial is in "bad taste" and that it makes light of a serious situation. According to Wired, "The message is clear: All those women's marches, Black Lives Matter protests, and demonstrations outside Trump Tower would be much more effervescent–and effective!–if someone had just brought some soda" (Watercutter). Pepsi appeals to viewers via logos through logical fallacies. Specifically, they are using emotion, authority, and popularity to sell their soda. Pepsi appeals to emotion by making a protest a focal point of the commercial. Typically, anger and gladness drive protestors. The point of protesting is to voice an opinion and promote change. Protesters are angry that they have an unresolved issue, but glad that they are surrounded by like minded people. In America today, protests are all over the news. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 26. Analysis Of ' Tis Pity She 's A Whore ' We admire disobedience and defiance in the face of the inevitable. In " 'Tis pity she's a whore" John Ford portrays a corrupt Parmesan society in which two siblings are defying the conventions of the world they are leaving in for a chance for their incesteus love to exist. From the beginning of the play Giovanni and Annabella's love story line seems to be following the conventional formula, however we are constantly reminded that it is anything but alike conventional. Both protagonists are disobeying society's conventions, going against morality, nature, religion and culture. Throughout the play Ford is constantly keeping the audience in a state of confusion and uncertainty of weather we sympathies with the tragic lovers or we are disgusted by the incesteus nature of their relationship: "O, Annabella, I am quite undone: the love of thee, my sister, and the view of thy immortal beauty hath untuned all harmony both of my rest and life". Ford uses the conventional love language and imagery, which for a moment tempts the audience to disregard the unnaturalness of their love and apply the conventional innocence of two lovers on it: "On my knees, brother, even by our mother's dust, I charge you, do not betray me to your mirth or hate; love me or kill me, brother."–Annabella and Giovanni announce their love to the audience giving wedding–like vows to each other, however the audience cannot overlook that Giovanni and Annabella demonstrate the awareness of the forbidden nature of ... Representations of sexuality in Early Modern literature reveal a variety of attitudes, but they can be characterised by the ambivalence which they display towards the subject of desire and its consequences for the self. The destructive potential of desire is revealed in John Ford's Tis Pity She's A Whore, widely considered to be one of the most radical works of Jacobean theatre, not only for its frank and nuanced portrayal of incest, but for its reworking of the theme of ill–fated love from Romeo and Juliet into a dark rumination on the fundamental incommunicability of desire and the impossibility of mutual understanding. Annabella's response: 'such a life gives no content to me' (I.2.71–2) indicates her wish to avoid this system entirely, which the prospect of a mutually loving relationship with Giovanni seems to offer. When Soranzo interrogates her on the father of her child, as Lisa Hopkins has pointed out, she compares her unborn child to the immaculate conception, and by inference herself to the Virgin Mary, describing Giovanni as 'angel–like' and worthy of 'true worship'(IV.3.37–41)[10]. While she takes pleasure in teasing Soranzo here, her real intent is to express the communion which she feels in her relationship with Giovanni that the strictures of conventional marriage cannot offer. Susannah Mintz writes: 'the fact that Annabella and Giovanni occupy unequal social positions...suggests that their motivations toward incest may also be different'[11]. This concept would explain why having a purpose, the ritual of death, and sharing stories matter. In Hamlet, William Shakespeare questions the value of life and the importance of the individual. He argues that a singular being ultimately does not matter unless their story is shared. A person who cannot find meaning in life, or cannot live up to what is expected of them, will struggle to make decisions. Queen Elizabeth and Annabella in "Tis Pity She's a Whore" by John Ford Annabella, the female protagonist in John Ford's play, 'Tis Pity She's a Whore, ultimately dies after trying to meet the conflicting demands that her brother and father place on her. While her brother, Giovanni, commands her to be his clandestine lover, her father, Florio, expects her to marry a socially appropriate man and bear a child. These demands closely resemble the real–life demands that Queen Elizabeth I's subjects placed on her because they simultaneously wanted her to fulfill their erotic desires, marry a politically appropriate man, and produce an heir to the throne. He takes a stance in going against the superstitions and predictions of the future, "augury", just as the harbinger Horatio senses and warns him right before. Even now, Hamlet remains true as an agent of Christian providence since he believes that God has control over all occurrences in the world, including those most trivial. He then voices the next few lines in sharp yet simple repetition, that is, his death will either happen momentarily or eventually. With the aid of inclusive language, 'thou esteem'st' to', and insinuated emasculation, 'And live a coward in thine own esteem', Lady Macbeth pressurises and strips Macbeth of his moral and loyal characteristics, imposing unrequested acts of ambition onto him. Accordingly, with Macbeth being pressured by his own foresight and obliged to comply with the expectations of his wife into committing to something that he was once against, audiences can understand to a certain degree the distress that Macbeth is going through. Review Of ' The Jati ' Aaron Thomas Nancey Moore HIS 111 – 4106 9 September 2015 The Jati Thousands of years ago in Asia, a book was written that gave social structure that would go on through the ages in India. Today that social structure is called the Jati or in English words, the Caste system. While it has undergone a few changes here and there, the system has relatively been unchanged and just like thousands of years ago when it was first introduced in the Vedas, it exists in modern day India as a part of society in it. This paper will go over a more detailed explanation of the Jati as well as the classes and books that defined the Jati system, most notably the "Laws of Mandu". Jati translates to "caste" so in English it is called the Caste system. In the Jati system there are four main castes one falls under: Shudra, Viasya, Kshatryia and Bhramin. Outside of the caste system are the outcasts or also called untouchables. Within these main four castes there are thousands of subcastes a group of people will fall under. One important thing to note where unlike most social classes of ancient time, in the Jati system, it is possible to move up in the caste. While a subcaste may not move up as an individually, the entire group can move up. So while there is subcaste A and subcaste B. While Subcaste B is currently higher up on the caste it is possibly for subcaste A as a whole to move up above subcaste B. It is hard for an audience to sympathize with anger and Othello has given them much to handle. Anyone who has read the play knows that the plot has so many twists and turns that make it such an intriguing story. It begins with Hamlet being upset after his father dies of poison. Queen Gertrude, his mother, remarries quite quickly to Claudius, Hamlet's uncle. Queen Gertrude doesn't know that Claudius killed her original husband, but Hamlet assumes that she knows about the murder and that she remarried simply for sexual desire, which isn't the case. Hamlet's love for his mother quickly turns to hate because she is so innocent about the situation; he thinks she is pretending to not know. The increasing failure in relationships fuels Hamlet to plan revenge on King Claudius. He has to continually adjust his plan throughout the story when Claudius tries to get rid of him. Hamlet becomes so focused on plotting revenge on Claudius that he doesn't even notice that he abuses his mother's love for him and it ends up killing them both in the end. It's that big test you studied for, that internship you wanted more than anything else, or the denial from that one person you really hope would say yes to a date. It's happened to all of us. But, it's how we choose to look at all of our failures that really defines who we are as a person. I believe we all need to fail. When we continually succeed, it's a great feeling and we can ride that wave for as long as possible, but eventually it will end and instead the wave of reality will hit hard. I'm a firm believer that failure needs to be taught. I'm not saying that you need to learn how to fail, but rather learn how to cope with failure. If you learn to cope with failure in a healthy way, you can easily benefit from it and it can help you become a better person. However, if you don't learn how to cope with your ...
