In cotemporary America, cultural text such as films form many conceptions of race, gender and
social for the people who watch them. This paper argues four Key and Peele skits "Substitute
Teacher", "I Said B*tch", "Phone Call" and "Proud Thug" to challenge and complicate gender norms
by highlighting the ways in which gender, race and class are performed in public and private
settings. When you critically examine these texts there are stereotypes that underlay the film that are
obvious, but are portrayed as comical. The intersectionality between gender, race and class are often
addressed in many of these short skits. Often the films or skits engage in patriarchy and the main
characters are men. In order to further examine the topic first ... Show more content on

Mr. Darvey had been so used to working in such a rough place that he still had most of the inner city
qualities instilled in him. Mr. Darvey even goes on to pronounce the students name funny as almost
as an inner city person would pronounce it. The stereotypes are obvious in this skit, but are put into
a comical setting. Key and Peele are often found using these stereotypes in many of their films. This
is their own attempt to challenge and to complicate gender norms.
Key and Peele challenge the way masculinity is viewed and share their own perception on
masculinity. In the Skit "I said B*tch" Key and Peele are two husband with their wives and one
come to another house. The setting is in an upper middle class neighborhood and they are perceived
to be well–educated and proper men. The two women go on to walk around the house to for a tour
of the estate. Key and Peele start to talk about their wives to each other and telling each other about
the thing that their wives do that drive them crazy. Key goes on to tell Peele about how his wife was
being slow in the shower. Key said "When I was tracking my wife down about 20 minutes later she
was stepping out of the damn shower she said 'can I help you?' Craig I looked this women straight in
her eyes and said B*tch you said 6:45 and it 7:15" (K&P I Said B*tch). Before Key said B*tch they

Analysis Of Do The Right Thing
3. How closely does the film "Do the Right Thing" resemble the current state of race relations in
America? The film Do the Right Thing, very closely resembles the current state of race relations in
America. Spike Lee directed the film in 1989 and I feel even in 2017 race relations are still ignored
and hasn't actually changed. Even though African Americans were the focus in this film,
unfortunately all "races" are affected some kind of way by race relations. There are specific scenes
in the film that depict the dysfunctional social environments that goes on in areas of poverty. In
2017, similarly portrayed incidents are seen in America. For example, I believe the increase in
killing of black males within the last few years could be the result of dysfunctional environment,
police shooting people and people shooting police in retaliation. After viewing the film and hearing
of current "racial" events – my observation is that racial relations in American remains unchanged.
In fact, many believe that it is getting worse and has become a major issue.
4. How does the film waver between middle–class values and street values? (Relate to excerpt from
There Are No Children Here reading). How does one's social class need to be a part of any
discussion of law and inequality?
Regarding the film and associated reading, they both are related and embraces a specific way in
which a person or group lives. The film directly wavers between middle–class values and street
values in the way it portrays the value of hard work and ambition versus the unrest of poverty and
street surviving. For example, Mookie was criticized by his boss and girlfriend for being lazy and
lacking ambition. Actually, he was never given a chance by the boss' son who didn't like blacks. In
the excerpt, There Are No Children Here, the children were exposed to so much unrest at a young
age that most fell victim to life in the streets and therefore followed the street values that correlate
with it. However, the story embraced the desire for the children in those circumstances to be
rewarded with an education, a good job and to leave the poverty stricken atmosphere (Kotlowitz,
17). The theme was racial imbalance which promoted the dislike of police

Female Characters In The Film Imitations To Life By...
It's evident that black performers in Hollywood cinema are customarily depicted as unpleasant
based on the clichéd roles they play, for example: the mammy, the promiscuous character, or the
angry black woman. Within this paper, I will incorporate Bell Hooks idea of "The Oppositional
Gaze", and Marina Heung ideas discussed in the article "What 's the Matter with Sara Jane?"
Daughters and Mothers in Douglas Sirk 's "Imitation of Life". The film of focus is Imitation of Life
(1959) by Douglas Sirk, the film will be analyzed, but I will scrutinize representation of black
female characters within this film; in attempt to verify if this portrayal of the mammy and the
mulatto child is a positive reference for black females in cinema (because they ... Show more

Attempts to stop black people from gazing produced a desire to look, which resulted in an
oppositional gaze. Hooks alluded to this stance when she stated, "Mainstream cinema has
historically forced aware black female spectators not to look, and much feminist film criticism
disallows the possibility of a theoretical dialogue that might include black women's voices" (Hooks,
pg.125), the "gaze" has a form of opposition for black female in regards to film.
The film Imitations to Life (1959), explores the life of a widow Lora Meredith along with her hopes
of becoming a Broadway actress. She meets Annie Johnson after she lost her daughter (Susie) at the
beach, Johnson is a black single mother who also has a daughter called Sarah Jane. Sarah Jane
inherited her father 's fair complexion, and utilizes her European heritage and features to pass for
white. Because of Annie 's Kindness, Lora provisionally invites Annie and her daughter to stay with
her, but Annie convinces Lora to allow her stay and take care of the household. Eventually, Lora
becomes a star, but Lora 's focus on her profession inhibits her from spending time with her
daughter. Sarah Jane is struggling with her African–American identity and wants to pass for white
because of its privileges in American society in the pre–civil rights era.

Race Film : The Great And Only Essay
Chapter One
Race Films as a Genre in American Cinema
"Most people pronounced his last name 'Mee–show,' though some who knew him insist it was 'Mi–
shaw.' The correct pronunciation of his name is only the beginning of the ambiguities and mysteries
associated with Oscar Micheaux"
Patrick Mulligan–Oscar Micheaux: The Great and Only: The Life of America 's First Black
Filmmaker
From the very beginning of the early stages in American cinema, African Americans had a presence
on the silver screen. The twentieth century created a new era of cinema that consisted of films
produced for and targeted to an all–Black audience. "Race films" which existed in the United States
for over thirty years (1913–1948), were films produced by African Americans that focused on Black
themes and highlighted the talents of African American directors, producers, scriptwriters, and
actors.
However, according to African American film scholar Thomas Cripps, these early films were not
truly Black because their function, more or less, were to enlighten and mollify White people's
curiosity concerning Black culture. The argument presented by Cripps creates an opportunity for
speculation on how to categorize a well–known group of films about Black people that in most
cases included the participation of White filmmakers. How do we define the term "race film"?
Moreover, can these films be considered a "genre" or are they imitations of similar narratives
produced by White filmmakers such as comedies,

Films and Media Misrepresenting Race Essay
Films and Media Misrepresenting Race
abstract:
In many ways technology makes access to academic work, research and employment easier and
faster. However, I am concerned that technology is too often chosen over humanity.
Historically, representations of African Americans in technological media tend to value "white"
bodies at the expense of Black bodies (Stam and Spence, 1983). Further, recent studies show
(Zickmund 2000), in fact, the ways in which some World Wide Web sites make it easier for hate
groups to spread their misinformation, contributing to the devaluation of black bodies in
technological media. Together, these media representations can be understood in terms of a digital

The Matrix beautifully illustrates this conviction in Morpheus and Neo's relationship to one another.
Although we instinctively know that Morpheus is the hero and leader in the Matrix resistance, his
search for Neo (the One) is the source of his importance and the reason for his existence. Morpheus
(the black body) proves his "value" when he is willing to sacrifice his own life so that Neo (the
white body) might be saved. The Morpheus character is portrayed with an archetypal ambivalence,
present only to represent the image of a positive, patience, African American guardian of the white
body (Neo) the "real" hero who will free humanity from The Matrix. This positive imaging is
fraught with methodological dangers. "The exact nature of 'positive' first of all is somewhat relative;
black incarnations of patience and gradualism, for example, have always been more pleasing to
whites than to blacks." [1] Yet, it remains a common cinematic theme that makes me question the
visibility of African Americans' image scale and duration in film.
Part One: Bodies and Values
These questions of image scale and duration are intricately related to the respect afforded a character
and the potential for audience sympathy, understanding and identification. Which characters are

Problems With Birth Of A Nation
Problems with Birth of a Nation Birth of a Nation, a film written and directed by D. W. Griffith, that
follows the lives of two different families during the Civil War and the hardships that they had
faced. This film was very controversial for its time, and even during the current time period, with
the issues of race being brought up during the majority of the film. This film was written during the
1920's when pop culture was ever changing with the issues of race and gender. Birth of a Nation,
was somewhat of an accurate representation of that time period, but it often brought up about much
disgust with much of the sensitive content. Griffith's film was the talk of the decade, and is even still
relevant today, but it is very obvious that the issues brought up about race and genders were
oftentimes inaccurate. Birth of a Nation, is very evident to point out the social, and moral
differences that are forced upon women and not on men. The film focuses on the women in the
family as the caretaker of both the home and the family. Women were often thought of as hopeless,
"to demonstrate their dependence, physical weakness, passivity, and moral purity, middle–class
women were supposed to seek beauty through cleanliness, proper diet, and simple hairstyles"
(Ashby 43). Women in the film often times wore modest dresses, their hair in simple updo's, and
were expected to act morally and hospitable. Also, the difference between male and female
responsibilities during this time

The Importance Of Winning The Oscars Award

Every year, more than millions of audiences gather to watch The Oscars all over the world, which
stands the most authoritative awards of American film industry. Each award is based on the
Academy voting membership. The members of Academy are all of the excellent film artists who
active in the film area. Becoming the members needs to be sponsored by at least two Academy
members and passes the selection of Academy's Board of Governors carefully (Academy

filmmaker. The Oscars started in 1929 and has already held for 88 years. During this long history,

If people wanted black actor or actress to be mentioned on The Oscars every year, The Oscars will
have to add a special award for black people. Even though Rock's speech was trying to help The
Oscars wriggle out this awkward situation, it still can't end this arguing. The race problem has
existed in American film factory for a long time. In order to solve this problem, The Oscars should
not find any excuse to deny this problem. The imbalanced race members of A.M.P.A.S directly
cause that The Oscars voting tend to the white films. Meanwhile, the root of this problem comes
from Hollywood that doesn't give equality work opportunities to black people and doesn't pay as
much attention on black people films as whites'. In the long time, the authority of The Oscars will

The Oscars has successfully held more than 80 years that attributes the success to its professional

authority of this more than 80 years film festival has been shaken recently because of this voting

Race To Nowhere Film Analysis
Race to Nowhere is a documentary film that captures stress placed on students due to demanding
workloads. This film gives us an inside look on the education system: how it works, and its effect on
those connected to it. Ables uses a variety of methods to suck the viewer in. The creators aim for our
hearts with personal anecdotes and their soundtrack, followed by a string of families and
psychologists who deal with the problem firsthand. By attempting this juggling act of impacting the
viewer, maintaining credibility, and providing factual information, Ables' film begins to lose
substance. Throughout the film we are introduced to a variety of families from different age groups

This was one of the best strategies used by Ables in the film. Depending on the setting of the scene,
the mood of the music in the background changed. During sad portions, the music would become
slow and mellow, and during informational scenes , we would witness a more bouncy, energetic
mood. When things got a bit more serious, the music would fade out and the hush causedt the
viewer to focus in on what was being said. This approach was highly effective in appealing to the
emotions of the viewers.
Lastly, Ables successfully maintained credibility throughout the film. She introduced a string of
teachers, families, and psychologists. All of these people, experiencing conflicts from school
pressures firsthand, prevented anyone watching from questioning anything that was being said. This
was a move the strengthened Race to Nowhere's impact on the people watching.
Overall, Race to Nowhere was an interesting film to watch. It was especially engaging for audiences
who could relate. However, Ables did not manage to effectively portray her message Her use of
soundtrack, rhetorical appeals, and personal anecdotes were all great strategies in swaying the
viewer. However, she focused more on getting people to agree with her rather than arguing her side
and introducing approaches for change. If Ables wants the change suggested in the film, she's going

The African American Portrayal Of The Film Genre, Big...
The African American portrayal in white–American entertainment, especially in films has produced
malicious and ignorant beliefs of the everyday Black person. Entertainment venues such as minstrel
shows and silent films are causes to today's stereotypical views of African Americans. The African
American community along with other American ethnic cultures had enough; therefore, between
1915 and 1950, the race film genre began its movement to increase positive cultural awareness to
the world. This paper will examine three key elements (Keywords, Unspoken Cues, and Threads)
from the films, Big Timers (1945) and Dirty Gertie from Harlem U.S.A. (1946) in explaining their
significance impact and their fitting into the paradigm of race film genre. The race film genre is a
source of important material highlighting the African American culture. The genre not only focused
on culture, but also emphasized African American talent, Black's ability to film, produce, and direct
a motion picture, and most importantly, the genre exposed the world to the "real" African American
individual and family. Although many of these films were only shown and marketed to "colored
only" theaters, films like Harlem of Prairie (1937) and The Blood of Jesus (1941) are notable films
that struck a core with both White and Black Americans. These are a few of the forgotten race films
that have provided today's African Americans with a sense of encouragement and confidence to

Race In The Film 'The Colour Of Beauty'
Many theories have been constructed amongst the discussion of critical race theory. According to
Hatch (2007) critical race theorists often view race as a social construction. The key factor within
racialization is the implication of divisions between classes and race. Inferiority and superiority can
be seen as a threat to a specific social class, and highlights one's difference as they sacrifice the
similarities. This inevitably undermines a particular racial group and can effect how this population
is treated. According to Mujri (2005), "The idea of 'race' in this sense has had wide and damaging
consequences due to the view that groups possess fixed traits and particular intellectual and physical
characteristics" (290). Racism and oppressiveness is directed towards people of colour. ... Show

This documentary is about a black model named Renee, who resides and tries to make a living in

racism is apparent. As the documentary continues statements are made such as agents looking for a

Analysis Of The Film 'Race To Nowhere'
It is well known that the American education system has been questioned constantly within the last
decade. Some even go as far as to take action and directly challenge methods used by schools and
those that are in charge of setting them in place. Race to Nowhere is an example of this. Race to
Nowhere is a film that openly criticizes the American education system and the unhealthy strain that
it puts on students. All throughout the film, the filmmaker includes statistics, student testimonials,
expert testimonials, visuals, and her own personal experiences to clearly convey her message to the
audience and leave an impact.
Race to Nowhere was created by a mother of three that wanted to take action after noticing alarming
changes in her children's behavior. Her children are shown quite often throughout the film,
especially the youngest two. In the beginning of the documentary their children appear to constantly
be in a rush due to their hectic schedules. The younger daughter, a middle school student, had
acquired a physical illness due to the amount of stress she was under from extracurriculars and
academics. The filmmaker also became alarmed after a thirteen year old girl in their community had
committed suicide, which had been mentioned multiple times during the film. The following scene
begins to stray from the filmmaker's background information to a collection of public school
students originating from varying locations, schools, and backgrounds. This is where the

How Do Aliens Represent African American
In science fiction films many different races are represented: African Americans, Italians, Asians,
Aboriginals, etc. For this essay I am going to observe how this movie genre portrays African
Americans by analyzing the film series Men in Black. Furthermore, I believe these films view this
race negatively which indicates a racial divide in society. But first I am going to identify how this
movie genre depicts the race and culture I am focusing on.
In "Some Things We Know About Aliens," by Istvan Csicsrey, Jr, discusses how science fiction

I believe this movie views African Americans negatively as it mentions and confirms stereotypes
surrounding this race. The first stereotype, relates how African Americans are controlled by white
people. In the scene, where Smith is looking for information about Borris, he is denied access by
Agent O, Emma Thomson. Furthermore, when Smith is denied access, the camera is fixed at a low
angle on him and fixed at a high angle when Thomson is viewed. Presenting, Thomson as the
dominant superior character who is in control of the shot and what Smith sees. Consequently,
stereotype confirmed: black people are controlled by white people. The second stereotype that is
confirmed, African Americans are scary people. After time travelling, Smith goes into an elevator
with a white man whose gestures reveal that he is uncomfortable. At first Smith calmly asks the man
what day it is but then he yells at the white man who cowers away. Consequently, the stereotype of
black men being scary is confirmed as the man is terrified of Smith. Lastly, the third stereotype that
is accepted is that if a black man is driving a nice car it means he stole it. As Smith is driving
towards a fair he is stopped by the police and asked if he stole the car. Smith then tells them that just

The Importance Of Race In The Film 'Slumdog Millionaire'
"If you can do nothing else, do whatever is in your power to make the people in your life feel
completely unashamed of who they are" (Killermann). As times change and our society continues to
evolve, the importance of human rights and acceptance are constantly emphasized. Through the
movie, "Slumdog Millionaire" directed by Danny Boyle I learned about discrimination relating to
social class. Additionally, in the song, "Small Town Boy" by Bronski Beat, I learned about how gay
individuals may be judged by society. Through further analyzing and exploring these texts, I could
seek real–life examples of how human rights can be violated. These texts prove that we must move
away from the deep–rooted issue of discrimination and learn to accept, love, and celebrate our
differences not only as individuals but as a society.
In Danny Boyle's movie, "Slumdog Millionaire", the use of pathos allows readers to understand how
discrimination relating to social class is a real issue. The movie follows the life of a Muslim boy
named Jamal, living in a Hindu environment. Jamal decides to participate in an Indian game show
and has made it to the final round that could win himself one million dollars. As the audience settles
down and the question is announced, the game show host turns to Jamal and says, "Do the right

Meaning Of Race In The Film 'Understanding Race'
The Meaning Of Race
The film "Understanding Race" gives many accounts of the meaning of the word race and what race
actually is and what it isn't. According to the film, most scientists agree that race doesn't exists in the
natural world. This conclusion was drawn in 1998, the concept of race was proven to have no
scientific validity and is not scientifically proven. The film suggests that just because the concept of
race isn't proven by science, that doesn't take away from the concept of race having a true meaning
for humans. Although race has a meaning to humans, there is not a distinct answer to what race
means. For example, during an interview in the film a comedian Margaret Cho, defines race as
being what you are but not who you are. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dolores Newton points out during the film that one of the things that has made humans successful
on Earth is that we have always been good at classifying things and looking at similarities and
differences. Maya Angelo suggests during an in film interview that we use the differences because
we don't know any better. She also suggests that we use the differences between ourselves in hopes
that we can make our own lives better. Although over many centuries humans have tried to divide
humans based on race, it has been proven that the human species cannot be divided into a small
number of groups because nobody has came up with a reasonable list of racial groups. The film
states that preconceptions about the race of people is something that all humans experience in their
lifetime whether they like to admit or not. Many of the preconceptions that individuals have will
cause them to act violently towards someone of a different race. Racial violence in America and the
rest of World is not uncommon. Throughout the history of the World there have been an

Analysis Of The Film 'Race To Nowhere'
The education system has always been one to push students to absolute perfection, but at what costs
do these measures become harmful, taxing and impractical? The film Race to Nowhere explores this
concept and examines the pressures society has placed on students to fit this "one size fits all"
definition of success. By presenting heart–wrenching stories of students who have suffered greatly
from this "silent epidemic", Race to Nowhere reveals to many an education system plagued by
stress, depression, cheating, eating disorders, and sleep deprivation. An education system where
there is emphasis on study to get the "A" instead of studying to truly retain the information. And
lastly an education system where students aren't truly learning. Through the use of visual elements,
expert testimonials, and personal anecdotes Race to Nowhere is able to captivate viewers' hearts,
and cause them to redefine the true meaning of "success". With the deliberate use of several visual
elements, Race to Nowhere appeals to the emotions of the viewers, causing them to relate to the
personal experiences described in the film. For example, with the introduction to the cause of this

his boom box. A massive situation becomes a tragedy when the police arrive. They kill Radio in
their efforts to calm him down.
The massacre eventually spirals and lead to the entire neighborhood coming together to destroy and
burn down the pizzeria. The racial tendencies still escalate throughout the film leaving the viewers
concerned about the racial issues. Although the battle is over nothing good has developed from it.
Fight the Power was played throughout the film. The song was played on the critical beats when a
conflict would surface. Lee states, "It symbolizes the need to fight the man, when the man is wrong,
immoral, or unjust." The ending is the most spoken about part of the film, although doing so is
unbearable without referring to the characters and events that come before it. Mookie, who is the

Racial Inequality : Guess Who 1
RACIAL INEQUALITY IN GUESS WHO 1
The 2005 film Guess Who illustrates how racial inequality is present within society, and how race is
used by our society to create and manufacture social categories. This film is about a black female
named Theresa and a white man named Simon that fight against the racial inequality present within
their society and choose to be together. Stereotypes, prejudice, ethnic chauvinism, and racism are
prevalent concepts throughout the movie. Most of these concepts are displayed by the people that
Theresa and Simon surround themselves with, but throughout the movie the audience starts to see
that Theresa and Simon gradually start to exemplify these racist concepts in their arguments and
conversations. They start to believe that they are unequal and different because of their skin, and
this shows the power that society has over its members. Specifically, how racial inequality is so
deeply rooted in our society that we force the view that race is a form of social stratification on
people. This is done through stereotypical comments and irrelevant cultural differences that are
reinforced through selective perception. The concept of racial inequality is extremely prevalent
throughout this film and many sociological theories can be applied to shed light on this specific
social problem

The Film 'Race To Nowhere'
The film "Race to Nowhere" is about the challenges and struggles students face in today's school
system. On top of homework, countless stressors, such as family and extracurricular activities, add
more pressure onto students across the nation. The film hopes to address the concerns that the
filmmaker has about our current education system and how it affects the students and their
wellbeing. The education system is flawed and changes need to be made to address this problem.
Society is made up of macro–level institutions, meso–level organizations, and micro–level
individuals, where all three levels interact with one another. For example, the education system is an
institution, "a stable cluster of values, norms, statuses, and roles that develops around a basic social
goal" (Basirico, Cashion, Eshleman 2014:113). The role of education as an institution is to help the
younger generation prepare for the workforce by helping them to develop skillsets and to replace the
older generation when they are ready to retire. For example, homework is given to the students to
accompany the teachers' lessons to help them understand the concepts. Teachers are required to
administer tests to measure student's understanding of the material. These assessments are used to
help prepare students for their future goals in life.
According to modernization theory, aging makes it harder for individuals to keep up with the
changes that society brings. In order to replace the older generation, the

Citizenship is theorized as a constant pull between the "selfish demands of the consumer economy

because the show educates and trains the viewers to be accepting of drag culture. I can be hard to

Race, Ethnicity, Art and Film Essay
This paper tries to analyze race relations, ethnicity and how art and film relates to these social issues
in their cultural context. Art and film have played vital roles in advocating for a society free of
ethnicity and racism. Using vivid descriptions and evidence of both text and a movie this paper
seeks to relate accordingly the concerned issues and factors affecting these social vices. It will
demonstrate race and ethnic tendencies in diverse cultural contexts.
As a demographic phenomenon, ethnicity is belonging to a specific ethnic group possessing distinct
culture and common origin. This is called inscriptive group identity. According to Said Edward

The colonial state activated heightened and enlarged ethnicity in a variety of ways. They brought
about a diverse wider group of interaction into competition, the colonies and the administrative
union started localizing administration. They started strengthening and enlarging ethnic allegiances
which increased ethnic tensions. In addition, they actively promoted preferential treatment of ethnic
groups as a matter of policy by establishing systems of collaboration.
Social Darwinism is a socialist theory that tries to understand the reason behind colonization and
other social vices like ethnicity. It was used to justify numerous exploits which we classify as
dubious moral values today. For instance doctors were responsible for assisting to die. Social
Darwinism states that people especially colonizers failed to justify the reason why they forcefully
seized land and resources from weaker natives. This is also illustrated in the military affairs where
the strongest military will win. The application of social Darwinism has since provided the
justification for more exploitative forms of social capitalism where workers are usually paid less and
yet they have worked for many hours.
It also tries to explain the reasoning behind slavery and colonization. However, not all social
Darwinism is negative. There are positive results of social Darwinism.

Compare Mississippi Burning And American History X
Mississippi Burning and American History X explore the idea of racism in both films through the
use of cinematic techniques. Both films were set in different times and places however still enhance
the idea that a particular race is superior in comparison to another. These films highlight how racism
has existed through the progression of human history in different settings; Mississippi Burning set in
Mississippi whereas American History in Los Angeles. Mississippi Burning (1988), directed by
Alan Parker is a fictional film which explores racism influenced by the murders of the three civil
rights workers committed by the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). American History X (1998) directed by
Tony Kaye highlights the societal racial issues during the late 90s and shows the influence of racial
hate within a young group of youth and the effect of white supremacy gangs within a certain area of
location. Although both films portray the underlying message of a hatred and violent nature towards
the blacks, the alteration of the characters' attitude and perceptions towards a particular race are
changed. Both films explore the theme of racial segregation, actions fueled by racial discrimination
and abuse of power. This is highlighted through the techniques of colour and flashback,
characterisation and camera shots and angles.

The Role Of Education In The Film 'Race To Nowhere'
The film, Race to Nowhere, is about the challenges and struggles students face in today's school
system. On top of homework, countless factors, such as family and extracurricular activities, add
more pressure onto students across the nation. The film hopes to address the concerns that the
filmmaker has about our current education system and how it affects the students and their well–
being.
The role of education is to help the younger
generation prepare for the workforce by helping them to develop skill sets and to prepare students
with life skills. For example, homework is given to the students to accompany the teachers' lessons
to help them understand the concepts. Teachers are required to administer tests to measure student's
understanding of the material. These assessments are used to help prepare students for their future
goals in life and to ultimately help lead them to become successful.
According to modernization theory, aging makes it harder for individuals to keep up with the
changes that society brings. In order to replace the older

Film Analysis Of A Classic Comedy In The Great Race
A genre of film that became relevant in the end of the 20th century and never lost popularity is the
comedy. With so many variations and versions of this movie type, such as slapstick and romance,
it's no wonder why so many people enjoy them. A classic comedy that came out in 1965, The Great
Race directed by Blake Edwards, utilizes both of these styles in a way that makes the film exciting
and extremely funny to watch. In the movie, a land race is planed from New York to Paris, with the
two main competitors being the heroic Great Leslie and the evil Professor Fate. Throughout the
film, Professor Fate's sidekick attempts to sabotage other competitors in the race while The Great
Leslie teams up with Maggie DuBois. The Great Race utilizes comedy styles perfectly, approaches
the "Battle of the Sexes" quite well, and also has some scenes that pushed the pushed the rules of the
production code. With so many examples of it, The Great Race is the epitome of a slapstick comedy
and also has great characteristics of a romance. The film is filled with over exaggerated facial
expressions and physical actions, as shown in the bar room brawl scene. In this scene, everyone
starts to fist fight, bodies are flying across the set, and tables and chairs are constantly being
destroyed. The film also possesses some romantic scenes, such as at the end of the race when Leslie
reveals his love for Maggie and they kiss. However, throughout the entire race there is a theme of

Analysis on Rebeca Keegan's Article on Racial Inequality...
During the semester, race is a big part of the lectures. In class, we talk about how race is
distinguishing physical characteristics used to place people in different racial categories (Jensen).
The biggest concern with race is racial inequality. Racial inequality is the inadequate or unfair
treatment of minorities in areas like income, education, employment, health, the criminal justice
system, and media. The article written by Rebecca Keegan from the Los Angeles Times newspaper
discusses the inequality of race in media specifically movies. This article relates to the unfairness in

Many people get ethnicity and race mixed up and use the words interchangeably. Ethnicity is
different from race because race is the distinguishing people based on physical characteristics,
whereas ethnicity is based on by cultural aspects. Many believe that race and ethnicity are same but
in reality they are very different. In race there is a minority and majority status. Minority status can
be presented as the inferior position versus the superior position for the majority status. By inferior
and superior, it refers to the more or less life chances that group has. Minority status would have
less life chances, meaning they have less opportunities to become successful, have a high income,
become employed in prestigious jobs, and overall get the same likelihood to have a better life than
the majority. As for the majority, they have a superior position in which it is easier for them to move
up the social ladder and be given opportunities for the betterment of their future. Minorities have it
worse in the world because they are treated unfairly and are usually the poorest out of everyone.
People look down on minorities and the majority thin they are better than the minorities. Keegan
writes her article on how minorities are unrepresented in movies especially. Keegan uses the

Stereotypes And Microaggressions In Disney Films
Stereotypes and Microaggressions in Disney Films It seems like the entertainment icon Walt Disney
Company has been around since the beginning of time, entertaining the public with its lifelike and
imaginative animations and characters. Nearly every parent and child that was born in the last
century has experienced a Disney animated film at some point in their lifetime, which has left either
a negative or positive impression on them. The experiences with Disney films leaves most viewers
with a warm and fuzzy feeling inside or the feeling of happiness, because the films themselves take
the viewer on a ride out of their reality into the World of imagination, fairytales, and fantasy. On the
contrary some ethnic viewers leave Disney films feeling misrepresents, disrespected, and upset
regarding the way that Disney choses to represent race and cultures other than Caucasian in their
films. The Disney company discriminates against people of ethnic backgrounds, does not take into
consideration the cultural differences between ethnic groups and deliberately stereotypes and
homogenizes all racial groups and protagonist in their films. Adults and children experience
stereotypes in two ways, from direct experience in life and from the media, which happens to be the
largest secondary source. The article entitled The Portrayal of Older Characters in Disney Animated

Race Film Research Paper
Since film began, minorities have been marginalized as characters and have not had their own
stories told. Some filmmakers have attempted to fix this by going outside of Hollywood production
system to make films that positively reflect the lives of minorities. This is not an attempt that is
limited to Hollywood, however. African filmmakers have also gone outside the normal means of
production in order to get their films made and their voices heard. Starting with Hollywood race
films in 1915 to about 1950, along with the efforts of Sembene and the emergence of Nollywood,
filmmakers have taken production into their own hands to ensure black lives are accurately
portrayed. Race films were one of the first attempts to go outside of the standard means of
production to make films for black audiences. These films, made 1915–1950, were produced for

Effects Of Racial Discrimination In The Film Race
Although the sports industry is rampant with racial inequality and prejudice, sports greatly
advantaged the African American community during the civil rights movement and helped to
eliminate racist rhetoric and practices, as shown in the movie Race (2016).
As a social institution, sports reflect the beliefs and practices of any given time or place. Shortly
before the civil rights movement began in 1954, recreational and professional sports were (quite
literally) a white man's game. There were many instances of African American athletes developing
their own teams in response to racial segregation, but colleges did not begin recruiting black players
until 1966 after an iconic basketball game between the University of Texas at El Paso, who had five
black starters, beat Kentucky, an all–white team, with the final score showing 72–65. College
coaches then began recruiting black student athletes, as this was believed to be the key to their
success. In the film, Race, there are many instances where black players were forced to limit
themselves or take orders from white student athletes. The film focuses mostly on Jessie's
experience with the football team, who periodically use racist remarks and insults to distract Jessie
on the track and in the locker room. Jessie and the other black athletes were also forced to live in
off–campus housing, and were not allowed in university restaurants. However, despite receiving
backlash from fellow students and coaches because of the color of

Race in Five Film Versions of Shakespeare's Othello Essay...
William Shakespeare's Othello is only moderately interested in questions of race and racism. For
Shakespeare, Othello's blackness was mainly a plot device. Though the bard did demonstrate
concerns about racial and religious prejudice, in Othello and The Merchant of Venice, his interest in
the tragedy of the Moor was principally psychological. For Shakespeare and his contemporary
audience, Othello was about jealousy, hatred, and vindictiveness.
The play has aged well, as have all Shakespeare's plays, but not, perhaps, in the ways Shakespeare's
contemporaries would have predicted. In Shakespeare's time, it would have been acceptable for
Othello to kill his wife, had she truly been unfaithful. What made Othello a tragic criminal to ...

Douglas Brode states, "Wells was fully aware that Shakespeare had been a pre–Freudian
psychologist" (154). Brode adds that, in the early 1950s when the psychological film was at its peak,
Othello served Welles' interest in Freudian psychology (154–155).
According to Michael MacLiammoir, who plays Iago to Welles' lead, Welles believed Iago was
impotent and a closet homosexual who married Emilia, played by Faye Compton, as his cover so he
could pass for heterosexual. In his published diary of the making of the film, Put Money in Thy
Purse, MacLiammoir goes on to say that Welles' Iago has a hero's crush on Othello, and becomes
upset and jealous as a hurt lover when Othello gives a promotion to Cassio, played by Michael
Laurence, instead of him. To add insult to injury, Othello is rumored to have slept with a frustrated
Emilia. In Welles version, both the director and Iago buy this motive. When Iago sees Othello and
Cassio, played by Derek Jacobi, joined together as brothers, it is too much for Iago. According to
Brode, Welles was adamant that MacLiammoir, appear, with the help of makeup and performance,
to be castrated (155).
Welles shot Othello on location in North Africa and Europe, and his use of camera angles and the
outdoor scenery is striking, as Jack F. Forgens notes:

20th Century Film Analysis
Throughout a variety of films in the 20th century, the motif of race, racism, and racial tensions have
been a repetitive theme. This can be highlighted through the films "Birth of a Nation" (1915), "The
Searchers" (1956), and "To Kill a Mockingbird" (1962). These iconic American movies illustrate the
integral role that race plays in paralleling the attitudes of the audience watching the movie and how
it fits within the larger historical tapestry. It can be observed how throughout overtime; these movies
demonstrate a decrescendo in their prominence of highlighting the issue of race. However, it is
important to note, that the interpretation of the films mentioned all provide aspects of wish
fulfillment but mostly capture reality. Overall, these three iconic films are a way the popular films in
American culture proposes specific viewpoints which can connect or be dissonant with the larger
perspectives of society on topics such as race. "Birth of a Nation" came out in 1915, which was a
time where the concepts of eugenics and sterilization were arising in popularity. In addition, this
was the first film showed this film showed in the White House under President Wilson. It was also
the early age of film making, and the director D.W Griffith used advanced techniques that were
never used before. This made "Birth of Nation" an iconic film despite the fact it was highly racist

The 'tourist destination' portrayal of the landscape is highly emphasised in Joe's narration. This
depiction of Australia as a natural, dramatic landscape is continued throughout the film, with several
other settings and landscapes showing a direct link with this first representation.
The portrayal of Australia as a ancient, dramatic, and somewhat spiritual landscape, is not only
shown in the exposition, but also in many landscapes to follow, one of these being the gorges
encountered by Jedda and Marbuck towards the end of the film. This landscape was not only used as
a representation of beauty, drama and the primeval nature of Australia, but also to create a sense of
awe and wonder at the mysterious, almost supernatural qualities of this particular setting. To achieve
this feeling of wonder, Chauvel has used extreme long shots to his advantage, placing Marbuck and
Jedda against the towering background of high, rocky gorges, thus making them look, and creating a
sense to the audience, that they are insignificant in this landscape. The use of soft European choral
music also highlights the supernatural aspects of this landscape, representing the landscape as being
one of high spiritual significance to the Aboriginal people. Although Chauvel has incorporated the

functional traits of sex, recognition of or emphasis upon sexual matters; involvement in sexual
activity; an organism 's preparedness for engaging in sexual activity." There a number of ways in
which sexual lines are crossed in the film. Clareece is raped by her father and eluded her mother as

Presently some aspiring artists are denied the training and platform necessary to develop their talent
while other artists are forced to not only be artists but also activists and public figures. In her article
Why Are There No Great Woman Artists, Linda Nocklin poses an eye opening question. She say,
"Would Senor Ruiz have paid as much attention or stimulated as much ambition for achievement if
Picasso had been a girl?" In the history of art talent has been stunted because the talented artist was
either a woman or a racial minority. To move forward as a society artists must be accepted with
open arms regardless of their race or gender. To create an environment that encourages artistic

perspectives on what it meant to be black (Stewart 225). Oftentimes, we would see black actors
being portrayed in scenes as the antagonist committing crimes, as in the case of D.W. Griffith's Birth
of a Nation. Soon after Griffith released the film, filmmaker Oscar Micheaux forever changed
American Independent Cinema with his "response" film Within Our Gates, which helped start the
advent of race films (NAACP 1). Some of the most notable race films were: The Homesteader,
Body and Soul, and The Blood of Jesus. Such films were produced for all–black audiences that

Unemployed from nearly all jobs in town, Duff can no longer support his family. Mentally, he is

Discrimination and Misrepresentation of Minority Races in Film
Racists often believe that alternative races are inferior. Stuart Hall, an expert in the field of cultural
studies who is also interested in media studies, believes that it is difficult to completely eliminate
race as a "floating signifier" because it is impossible to remove the obvious physical differences of
distinct races. These distinctions are made increasingly aware by filmmakers to their audiences in
such films as West Side Story, Birth of a Nation, Gringo in Mananaland, and the Four Horsemen of

"Greaser" was used to refer to Mexicans who supposedly had used grease to comb their hair, but
soon it spread to incorporate other Hispanic groups as well. Racial epithets were commonly used
and construed into the plots of films, and minority racial groups tended to be increase the profit in
film sales (Keller 13). These epithets were reinforced to define a characteristic style of stereotyping
by playing on the attitudes that predominated among Anglo filmmakers and their white audiences

Two particular silent films both exemplify how stereotypes have played on racist Anglo–American
attitudes: the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and Birth of a Nation. The Four Horsemen of the
Apocalypse, shows how minority groups are kept as subjects to Anglos. For example, several
camera shots showed how this was thought to be true. A monkey, to which African Americans have

has several intentions. For one, it depicts how Anglo–Americans do not and will not accept the

In Cotemporary America, Cultural Text Such As Films Form...

  • 1. In cotemporary America, cultural text such as films form... In cotemporary America, cultural text such as films form many conceptions of race, gender and social for the people who watch them. This paper argues four Key and Peele skits "Substitute Teacher", "I Said B*tch", "Phone Call" and "Proud Thug" to challenge and complicate gender norms by highlighting the ways in which gender, race and class are performed in public and private settings. When you critically examine these texts there are stereotypes that underlay the film that are obvious, but are portrayed as comical. The intersectionality between gender, race and class are often addressed in many of these short skits. Often the films or skits engage in patriarchy and the main characters are men. In order to further examine the topic first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mr. Darvey had been so used to working in such a rough place that he still had most of the inner city qualities instilled in him. Mr. Darvey even goes on to pronounce the students name funny as almost as an inner city person would pronounce it. The stereotypes are obvious in this skit, but are put into a comical setting. Key and Peele are often found using these stereotypes in many of their films. This is their own attempt to challenge and to complicate gender norms. Key and Peele challenge the way masculinity is viewed and share their own perception on masculinity. In the Skit "I said B*tch" Key and Peele are two husband with their wives and one come to another house. The setting is in an upper middle class neighborhood and they are perceived to be well–educated and proper men. The two women go on to walk around the house to for a tour of the estate. Key and Peele start to talk about their wives to each other and telling each other about the thing that their wives do that drive them crazy. Key goes on to tell Peele about how his wife was being slow in the shower. Key said "When I was tracking my wife down about 20 minutes later she was stepping out of the damn shower she said 'can I help you?' Craig I looked this women straight in her eyes and said B*tch you said 6:45 and it 7:15" (K&P I Said B*tch). • 2. Analysis Of Do The Right Thing 3. How closely does the film "Do the Right Thing" resemble the current state of race relations in America? The film Do the Right Thing, very closely resembles the current state of race relations in America. Spike Lee directed the film in 1989 and I feel even in 2017 race relations are still ignored and hasn't actually changed. Even though African Americans were the focus in this film, unfortunately all "races" are affected some kind of way by race relations. There are specific scenes in the film that depict the dysfunctional social environments that goes on in areas of poverty. In 2017, similarly portrayed incidents are seen in America. For example, I believe the increase in killing of black males within the last few years could be the result of dysfunctional environment, police shooting people and people shooting police in retaliation. After viewing the film and hearing of current "racial" events – my observation is that racial relations in American remains unchanged. In fact, many believe that it is getting worse and has become a major issue. 4. How does the film waver between middle–class values and street values? (Relate to excerpt from There Are No Children Here reading). How does one's social class need to be a part of any discussion of law and inequality? Regarding the film and associated reading, they both are related and embraces a specific way in which a person or group lives. The film directly wavers between middle–class values and street values in the way it portrays the value of hard work and ambition versus the unrest of poverty and street surviving. For example, Mookie was criticized by his boss and girlfriend for being lazy and lacking ambition. Actually, he was never given a chance by the boss' son who didn't like blacks. In the excerpt, There Are No Children Here, the children were exposed to so much unrest at a young age that most fell victim to life in the streets and therefore followed the street values that correlate with it. However, the story embraced the desire for the children in those circumstances to be rewarded with an education, a good job and to leave the poverty stricken atmosphere (Kotlowitz, 17). The theme was racial imbalance which promoted the dislike of police ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Female Characters In The Film Imitations To Life By... It's evident that black performers in Hollywood cinema are customarily depicted as unpleasant based on the clichéd roles they play, for example: the mammy, the promiscuous character, or the angry black woman. Within this paper, I will incorporate Bell Hooks idea of "The Oppositional Gaze", and Marina Heung ideas discussed in the article "What 's the Matter with Sara Jane?" Daughters and Mothers in Douglas Sirk 's "Imitation of Life". The film of focus is Imitation of Life (1959) by Douglas Sirk, the film will be analyzed, but I will scrutinize representation of black female characters within this film; in attempt to verify if this portrayal of the mammy and the mulatto child is a positive reference for black females in cinema (because they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Attempts to stop black people from gazing produced a desire to look, which resulted in an oppositional gaze. Hooks alluded to this stance when she stated, "Mainstream cinema has historically forced aware black female spectators not to look, and much feminist film criticism disallows the possibility of a theoretical dialogue that might include black women's voices" (Hooks, pg.125), the "gaze" has a form of opposition for black female in regards to film. The film Imitations to Life (1959), explores the life of a widow Lora Meredith along with her hopes of becoming a Broadway actress. She meets Annie Johnson after she lost her daughter (Susie) at the beach, Johnson is a black single mother who also has a daughter called Sarah Jane. Sarah Jane inherited her father 's fair complexion, and utilizes her European heritage and features to pass for white. Because of Annie 's Kindness, Lora provisionally invites Annie and her daughter to stay with her, but Annie convinces Lora to allow her stay and take care of the household. Eventually, Lora becomes a star, but Lora 's focus on her profession inhibits her from spending time with her daughter. Sarah Jane is struggling with her African–American identity and wants to pass for white because of its privileges in American society in the pre–civil rights era. Sarah Jane completely dismisses her black ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Race Film : The Great And Only Essay Chapter One Race Films as a Genre in American Cinema "Most people pronounced his last name 'Mee–show,' though some who knew him insist it was 'Mi– shaw.' The correct pronunciation of his name is only the beginning of the ambiguities and mysteries associated with Oscar Micheaux" Patrick Mulligan–Oscar Micheaux: The Great and Only: The Life of America 's First Black Filmmaker From the very beginning of the early stages in American cinema, African Americans had a presence on the silver screen. The twentieth century created a new era of cinema that consisted of films produced for and targeted to an all–Black audience. "Race films" which existed in the United States for over thirty years (1913–1948), were films produced by African Americans that focused on Black themes and highlighted the talents of African American directors, producers, scriptwriters, and actors. However, according to African American film scholar Thomas Cripps, these early films were not truly Black because their function, more or less, were to enlighten and mollify White people's curiosity concerning Black culture. The argument presented by Cripps creates an opportunity for speculation on how to categorize a well–known group of films about Black people that in most cases included the participation of White filmmakers. How do we define the term "race film"? Moreover, can these films be considered a "genre" or are they imitations of similar narratives produced by White filmmakers such as comedies, ... • 5. Films and Media Misrepresenting Race Essay Films and Media Misrepresenting Race abstract: In many ways technology makes access to academic work, research and employment easier and faster. However, I am concerned that technology is too often chosen over humanity. Historically, representations of African Americans in technological media tend to value "white" bodies at the expense of Black bodies (Stam and Spence, 1983). Further, recent studies show (Zickmund 2000), in fact, the ways in which some World Wide Web sites make it easier for hate groups to spread their misinformation, contributing to the devaluation of black bodies in technological media. Together, these media representations can be understood in terms of a digital devide between technological "haves" and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Matrix beautifully illustrates this conviction in Morpheus and Neo's relationship to one another. Although we instinctively know that Morpheus is the hero and leader in the Matrix resistance, his search for Neo (the One) is the source of his importance and the reason for his existence. Morpheus (the black body) proves his "value" when he is willing to sacrifice his own life so that Neo (the white body) might be saved. The Morpheus character is portrayed with an archetypal ambivalence, present only to represent the image of a positive, patience, African American guardian of the white body (Neo) the "real" hero who will free humanity from The Matrix. This positive imaging is fraught with methodological dangers. "The exact nature of 'positive' first of all is somewhat relative; black incarnations of patience and gradualism, for example, have always been more pleasing to whites than to blacks." [1] Yet, it remains a common cinematic theme that makes me question the visibility of African Americans' image scale and duration in film. Part One: Bodies and Values These questions of image scale and duration are intricately related to the respect afforded a character and the potential for audience sympathy, understanding and identification. • 6. Problems With Birth Of A Nation Problems with Birth of a Nation Birth of a Nation, a film written and directed by D. W. Griffith, that follows the lives of two different families during the Civil War and the hardships that they had faced. This film was very controversial for its time, and even during the current time period, with the issues of race being brought up during the majority of the film. This film was written during the 1920's when pop culture was ever changing with the issues of race and gender. Birth of a Nation, was somewhat of an accurate representation of that time period, but it often brought up about much disgust with much of the sensitive content. Griffith's film was the talk of the decade, and is even still relevant today, but it is very obvious that the issues brought up about race and genders were oftentimes inaccurate. Birth of a Nation, is very evident to point out the social, and moral differences that are forced upon women and not on men. The film focuses on the women in the family as the caretaker of both the home and the family. Women were often thought of as hopeless, "to demonstrate their dependence, physical weakness, passivity, and moral purity, middle–class women were supposed to seek beauty through cleanliness, proper diet, and simple hairstyles" (Ashby 43). Women in the film often times wore modest dresses, their hair in simple updo's, and were expected to act morally and hospitable. The Importance Of Winning The Oscars Award OscarsSoWhite Every year, more than millions of audiences gather to watch The Oscars all over the world, which stands the most authoritative awards of American film industry. Each award is based on the Academy voting membership. The members of Academy are all of the excellent film artists who active in the film area. Becoming the members needs to be sponsored by at least two Academy members and passes the selection of Academy's Board of Governors carefully (Academy Membership, 2015). Therefore, winning The Oscars award is a goal and achievement of each filmmaker. The Oscars started in 1929 and has already held for 88 years. During this long history, the race problem has always been mentioned. For this year, before the 88th Oscars, this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If people wanted black actor or actress to be mentioned on The Oscars every year, The Oscars will have to add a special award for black people. Even though Rock's speech was trying to help The Oscars wriggle out this awkward situation, it still can't end this arguing. The race problem has existed in American film factory for a long time. In order to solve this problem, The Oscars should not find any excuse to deny this problem. The imbalanced race members of A.M.P.A.S directly cause that The Oscars voting tend to the white films. Meanwhile, the root of this problem comes from Hollywood that doesn't give equality work opportunities to black people and doesn't pay as much attention on black people films as whites'. In the long time, the authority of The Oscars will lose. The Oscars has successfully held more than 80 years that attributes the success to its professional voting system whose voting members are all come from the outstanding film artists. However, the authority of this more than 80 years film festival has been shaken recently because of this voting system – the imbalanced race members of A.M.P.A.S make OscarsSoWhite. According to Driscoll (2016), "A Los Angeles Times 2012 study found that of those who vote, the median age was 62, almost 94 percent were Caucasian, and 77 percent were male" (p.1). This film gives us an inside look on the education system: how it works, and its effect on those connected to it. Ables uses a variety of methods to suck the viewer in. The creators aim for our hearts with personal anecdotes and their soundtrack, followed by a string of families and psychologists who deal with the problem firsthand. By attempting this juggling act of impacting the viewer, maintaining credibility, and providing factual information, Ables' film begins to lose substance. This was one of the best strategies used by Ables in the film. Depending on the setting of the scene, the mood of the music in the background changed. During sad portions, the music would become slow and mellow, and during informational scenes , we would witness a more bouncy, energetic mood. When things got a bit more serious, the music would fade out and the hush causedt the viewer to focus in on what was being said. This approach was highly effective in appealing to the emotions of the viewers. Lastly, Ables successfully maintained credibility throughout the film. She introduced a string of teachers, families, and psychologists. All of these people, experiencing conflicts from school pressures firsthand, prevented anyone watching from questioning anything that was being said. This was a move the strengthened Race to Nowhere's impact on the people watching. Overall, Race to Nowhere was an interesting film to watch. It was especially engaging for audiences who could relate. However, Ables did not manage to effectively portray her message Her use of soundtrack, rhetorical appeals, and personal anecdotes were all great strategies in swaying the viewer. However, she focused more on getting people to agree with her rather than arguing her side and introducing approaches for change. • 9. The African American Portrayal Of The Film Genre, Big... The African American portrayal in white–American entertainment, especially in films has produced malicious and ignorant beliefs of the everyday Black person. Entertainment venues such as minstrel shows and silent films are causes to today's stereotypical views of African Americans. The African American community along with other American ethnic cultures had enough; therefore, between 1915 and 1950, the race film genre began its movement to increase positive cultural awareness to the world. This paper will examine three key elements (Keywords, Unspoken Cues, and Threads) from the films, Big Timers (1945) and Dirty Gertie from Harlem U.S.A. (1946) in explaining their significance impact and their fitting into the paradigm of race film genre. The race film genre is a source of important material highlighting the African American culture. The genre not only focused on culture, but also emphasized African American talent, Black's ability to film, produce, and direct a motion picture, and most importantly, the genre exposed the world to the "real" African American individual and family. Although many of these films were only shown and marketed to "colored only" theaters, films like Harlem of Prairie (1937) and The Blood of Jesus (1941) are notable films that struck a core with both White and Black Americans. These are a few of the forgotten race films that have provided today's African Americans with a sense of encouragement and confidence to continue to fight the struggle of ... • 10. Race In The Film 'The Colour Of Beauty' Many theories have been constructed amongst the discussion of critical race theory. According to Hatch (2007) critical race theorists often view race as a social construction. The key factor within racialization is the implication of divisions between classes and race. Inferiority and superiority can be seen as a threat to a specific social class, and highlights one's difference as they sacrifice the similarities. This inevitably undermines a particular racial group and can effect how this population is treated. According to Mujri (2005), "The idea of 'race' in this sense has had wide and damaging consequences due to the view that groups possess fixed traits and particular intellectual and physical characteristics" (290). Racism and oppressiveness is directed towards people of colour. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Directly from the start, racism is apparent. As the documentary continues statements are made such as agents looking for a "white girl dipped in chocolate", wanting white girls to look like they have been painted black and casting directors not looking for "black girl features". • 11. Analysis Of The Film 'Race To Nowhere' It is well known that the American education system has been questioned constantly within the last decade. Some even go as far as to take action and directly challenge methods used by schools and those that are in charge of setting them in place. Race to Nowhere is an example of this. Race to Nowhere is a film that openly criticizes the American education system and the unhealthy strain that it puts on students. All throughout the film, the filmmaker includes statistics, student testimonials, expert testimonials, visuals, and her own personal experiences to clearly convey her message to the audience and leave an impact. Race to Nowhere was created by a mother of three that wanted to take action after noticing alarming changes in her children's behavior. Her children are shown quite often throughout the film, especially the youngest two. In the beginning of the documentary their children appear to constantly be in a rush due to their hectic schedules. The younger daughter, a middle school student, had acquired a physical illness due to the amount of stress she was under from extracurriculars and academics. The filmmaker also became alarmed after a thirteen year old girl in their community had committed suicide, which had been mentioned multiple times during the film. The following scene begins to stray from the filmmaker's background information to a collection of public school students originating from varying locations, schools, and backgrounds. The first stereotype, relates how African Americans are controlled by white people. In the scene, where Smith is looking for information about Borris, he is denied access by Agent O, Emma Thomson. Furthermore, when Smith is denied access, the camera is fixed at a low angle on him and fixed at a high angle when Thomson is viewed. The second stereotype that is confirmed, African Americans are scary people. After time travelling, Smith goes into an elevator with a white man whose gestures reveal that he is uncomfortable. At first Smith calmly asks the man what day it is but then he yells at the white man who cowers away. Consequently, the stereotype of black men being scary is confirmed as the man is terrified of Smith. The Importance Of Race In The Film 'Slumdog Millionaire' "If you can do nothing else, do whatever is in your power to make the people in your life feel completely unashamed of who they are" (Killermann). As times change and our society continues to evolve, the importance of human rights and acceptance are constantly emphasized. Through the movie, "Slumdog Millionaire" directed by Danny Boyle I learned about discrimination relating to social class. Additionally, in the song, "Small Town Boy" by Bronski Beat, I learned about how gay individuals may be judged by society. Through further analyzing and exploring these texts, I could seek real–life examples of how human rights can be violated. These texts prove that we must move away from the deep–rooted issue of discrimination and learn to accept, love, and celebrate our differences not only as individuals but as a society. In Danny Boyle's movie, "Slumdog Millionaire", the use of pathos allows readers to understand how discrimination relating to social class is a real issue. The film Race to Nowhere explores this concept and examines the pressures society has placed on students to fit this "one size fits all" definition of success. By presenting heart–wrenching stories of students who have suffered greatly from this "silent epidemic", Race to Nowhere reveals to many an education system plagued by stress, depression, cheating, eating disorders, and sleep deprivation. An education system where there is emphasis on study to get the "A" instead of studying to truly retain the information. And lastly an education system where students aren't truly learning. Released in 1990, the production context is dissimilar to that of Stalking the Moon (1968) which was released 22 years earlier. During this time The Civil Rights Movement had established itself and ideologies towards race had changed in society, shown tremendously through the syntactic variation of the Revisionist Western. Additionally, significant key events throughout history helped shape the genre, one of which was the unification of Germany in 1990 after the destruction and removal of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Ultimately the Berlin Wall endorsed segregation of East and West Berlin and can be compared to the Western genre known to have endorsed racial segregation. The removal of the wall demonstrates a change in attitude and reinforces the idea of moving forward in society, which the revisionist Western achieves and can seen within Dances with Wolves (1990). Directed by Kevin Costner, the film portrays other races as equals. Race and Representation in the Film Jedda Essay examples Race and Representation in the Film Jedda Jedda, Australia's first colour film, created in 1955 by Charles Chauvel deals with an Aboriginal child adopted by a white grazing family. As she grows up, Jedda is tempted more and more to return to her people. Seduced by the wild Marbuck, she partakes in the film's tragedy, played out against a spectacular landscape. This essay seeks to discuss the representations of the Australian landscape as portrayed in the film Jedda, highlighting the use of filmic techniques in these representations. One of the first representations encountered in the film Jedda is the portrayal of Australia as a tourist destination in the exposition of the film. This glorified view of the landscape is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The 'tourist destination' portrayal of the landscape is highly emphasised in Joe's narration. This depiction of Australia as a natural, dramatic landscape is continued throughout the film, with several other settings and landscapes showing a direct link with this first representation. The portrayal of Australia as a ancient, dramatic, and somewhat spiritual landscape, is not only shown in the exposition, but also in many landscapes to follow, one of these being the gorges encountered by Jedda and Marbuck towards the end of the film. This landscape was not only used as a representation of beauty, drama and the primeval nature of Australia, but also to create a sense of awe and wonder at the mysterious, almost supernatural qualities of this particular setting. To achieve this feeling of wonder, Chauvel has used extreme long shots to his advantage, placing Marbuck and Jedda against the towering background of high, rocky gorges, thus making them look, and creating a sense to the audience, that they are insignificant in this landscape. The use of soft European choral music also highlights the supernatural aspects of this landscape, representing the landscape as being one of high spiritual significance to the Aboriginal people. Although Chauvel has incorporated the music into this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

'Precious' Based on the Novel Push by Saphire Analysis Jaclyn Butler 04/24/2012 Intracultural Communications Professor Brook Film Analysis on 2009's "Precious" Analyzing a dynamic film like the 2009 "Precious" is difficult. The movie got a lot of praise for the acting and the story that was portrayed but it also got a lot of heat from the race that was portrayed in the movie. African Americans nationwide said the movie made their African American ghettos into a sexually incest ridden, classless society and didn't properly show any of the positive attributes that come from the African American ghettos. In our course of Intra cultural communication we have studied through different topics, ones that I think are shown in the movie are culture, race, class, and sexuality. I am going to ... Other reviews of the movie put the article in a positive light Latoya Peterson, the editor of Racialicious.com, a blog about the intersection of race and popular culture, said opposing views of the film are off base. "Those reviews buy into the narrative that there can only be one acceptable presentation of black life," Ms. Peterson said. "They're flattening the black experience, and in that way, he denies our humanity."Ms. Peterson, who lives in the Washington area, said that she believed that "Precious" effectively tackled many issues affecting young girls: "sexual abuse, poverty, violence and failing schools." Sexuality in the movie "precious" was one of the subjects I found the most disturbing. Sexuality is defined as "sexual character; possession of the structural and functional traits of sex, recognition of or emphasis upon sexual matters; involvement in sexual activity; an organism 's preparedness for engaging in sexual activity." There a number of ways in which sexual lines are crossed in the film. Clareece is raped by her father and eluded her mother as well. Her two children are the product of her father's rape, and her sexual say in anything is taken away. She is doing these things for her parents and telling no one. She is being raped and taken advantage of by both of her parents and the actress tells no one of this. This portrayal is extreme, I am sure situations arise in this case but seeing the movie and watching the aspects of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Analysis Of The Last King Of Scotland: The Ethics Of Race... Picasso, Van Gogh, Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Titian, Monet, Rembrandt, Raphael, Warhol and Pollock, these names have three things in common. They are all great artists, they are all white, and they are all men. The general public could name several of these men before they could name a single female or minority artist of equal stature. The truth is that all historically great artists are white men. To a modern western society that champions racial and gender equality this statement screams injustice, as it should. To combat this injustice society is faced with two options; either scour history to find female and minority artists whose talent was suppressed from the global stage because of their race or sex, or invest all effort into ensuring ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Presently some aspiring artists are denied the training and platform necessary to develop their talent while other artists are forced to not only be artists but also activists and public figures. In her article Why Are There No Great Woman Artists, Linda Nocklin poses an eye opening question. She say, "Would Senor Ruiz have paid as much attention or stimulated as much ambition for achievement if Picasso had been a girl?" In the history of art talent has been stunted because the talented artist was either a woman or a racial minority. To move forward as a society artists must be accepted with open arms regardless of their race or gender. To create an environment that encourages artistic endeavors regardless of race and gender, racial and gender issues must not be taboo in the classroom. Students must learn how to overcome their differences and celebrate their diversity. Studying art and the shortcomings of diversity that art has experienced can open the minds of students. Leo Marx addresses this concept in his article Huck at 100. He advises that racial issues should be discussed in the classroom, but that they must be handled with care and sensitivity. It is incredibly important to the future success of art that art's "White men's club" be a thing of the past. Encouraging the talent of the future is imperative. It is also crucial though ... • 35. Taking a Closer Look at Race Films Essay In early African American Cinema, filmmakers had a mission to move away from white perspectives on what it meant to be black (Stewart 225). Oftentimes, we would see black actors being portrayed in scenes as the antagonist committing crimes, as in the case of D.W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation. Soon after Griffith released the film, filmmaker Oscar Micheaux forever changed American Independent Cinema with his "response" film Within Our Gates, which helped start the advent of race films (NAACP 1). Some of the most notable race films were: The Homesteader, Body and Soul, and The Blood of Jesus. Such films were produced for all–black audiences that featured black casts. Afterwards, Duff quits the job, as he was essentially forced to leave. Later we find him livid at a customer's bigotry towards him and Josie, which ends with Duff being let go. Unemployed from nearly all jobs in town, Duff can no longer support his family. Mentally, he is unable to accept this and as a result he physically abuses Josie and leaves. Now that we have a basic understanding of the two films, we can move forward with the analysis and the role that religion plays in their stories. In The Blood of Jesus, what does Martha's "unchurched" husband symbolize? On the other hand, the entire town appears to have blind faith, without any doubt. And in the case of Nothing But a Man, religion appears in the film by virtue of Josie's Preacher Father. Despite the holy devotion to his God, he is unaccepting of Duff, which seems to be the opposite of what is documented in the Christian Bible. Therefore, we can call the Preacher a hypocrite. How else do these two films represent or portray religion, or in other words what are they trying to say with their holy representations? How has it also been used to ... Minorities have unfortunately been left to deal and prevail through these discriminatory actions that were placed against them. The film, Race, goes into to detail about a time period where discrimination was a huge detriment to society's greatest athletes. It takes place during the 1936 Olympic games, where Jesse Owens, a world class sprinter for Ohio State University, finds himself in troublesome situations due to the color of his skin. Jesse has to find a way to block out the adversity and find out what he has to do to make a name for himself, his race, and his country. Stuart Hall, an expert in the field of cultural studies who is also interested in media studies, believes that it is difficult to completely eliminate race as a "floating signifier" because it is impossible to remove the obvious physical differences of distinct races. These distinctions are made increasingly aware by filmmakers to their audiences in such films as West Side Story, Birth of a Nation, Gringo in Mananaland, and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. "Greaser" was used to refer to Mexicans who supposedly had used grease to comb their hair, but soon it spread to incorporate other Hispanic groups as well. Racial epithets were commonly used and construed into the plots of films, and minority racial groups tended to be increase the profit in film sales (Keller 13). These epithets were reinforced to define a characteristic style of stereotyping by playing on the attitudes that predominated among Anglo filmmakers and their white audiences (Keller 14). Two particular silent films both exemplify how stereotypes have played on racist Anglo–American attitudes: the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and Birth of a Nation. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, shows how minority groups are kept as subjects to Anglos. For example, several camera shots showed how this was thought to be true. A monkey, to which African Americans have been commonly referred then and even now, is shown climbing a stick, and a white bird is perched at the peak of the stick, pecking at the monkey to keep him from climbing up the stick. This scene has several intentions. For one, it depicts how Anglo–Americans do not and will not accept the "coming up" of "racial inferiors", or rather they will do everything in their power to "keep blacks down" or keep them from climbing the social ladder to equality. Gender Stereotypes In The Film, The Illusion Of Race The movie, The Illusion of Race, focuses on the scientific discoveries of how humans cannot be distinguished from one another despite the certain characteristics that society has grouped to a certain ethnicity. A group of diverse students was selected to take part of an experiment that evidently proves these scientific discoveries by comparing their DNA with one another. Our culture has played an enormous factor in the beliefs and assumptions of people.
