A new sign on the Ashmun Street Bridge leading into downtown Sault Ste. Marie was funded by a downtown vibrancy grant.

SAULT STE. MARIE — Downtown Sault has a new, fresh-faced greeting for residents and visitors as they enter the city.

The recently installed sign reads 'Downtown Sault Ste. Marie' and hangs over the south end of the Ashmun Street Bridge heading into downtown. The sign is part of the city's wayfinding grant to help encourage and increase tourist traffic into the downtown area and promote local businesses.

In April, Sault Ste. Marie was one of eight Michigan communities to receive state grants for downtown improvement projects as part of the Main Street program. The city received $20,000, which has been used to fund a wayfinding project.

As part of the project, 19 new additional signs will be installed, including the replacement of the no longer functional digital sign hanging on the south side of the Ashmun Street Bridge. The other signs will be at street level and in the downtown area pointing towards various downtown businesses.
