Chippewa County Credit Union presents the Unsung Hero award to Barb Hillock.

SAULT STE. MARIE — Chippewa County Credit Union recently presented Barb Hillock with the Unsung Hero Award.

The award is designed to highlight the “unsung heroes” of Chippewa County. The individuals selected for the award have demonstrated outstanding service to the community.

According to Chippewa County Credit Union officials, Hillock exemplifies what the award is all about. Throughout the years she has given her time and talents to the community in a variety of ways.

Hillock, a lifelong resident of Chippewa County, said giving back is something that was taught to her.

“I was raised to give back. My whole family gives back,” she said. “It’s what we do.”

Hillock has spent 39 years on the Chippewa County Fair Board, along with over 30 years as an active member of the Bruce Township Homemakers, which puts on a dinner for senior citizens in the area. In addition, she has dedicated 25 years helping and mentoring within the 4-H Teen Club program.

Hillock said the Teen Club holds a particularly special place in her heart because she gets to pass on her love of volunteering.

“I love working with the kids,” she said. “Teen Club is based around community service, so our kids are out in the community helping."

Along with the award, Hillock received a $50 savings account at Chippewa County Credit Union, $50 in Chamber Bucks, and an assortment of Chippewa County Credit Union promotional items. During each quarter of 2023, Chippewa County Credit Union will select a winner from a list of nominees who have shown exemplary service to their community.
