This lot and the preceding one belonged to Sir John Richardson, art historian and author of the magisterial biography of Pablo Picasso, the first volume of which was published in 1991 and which won the Whitbread book of the year award.

The canvas is based on a marble relief in the Capitoline Museum, Rome.¹
