Wow, I love the visual aids from Lazarus! A suggestion: go to "google en español" and put reja in the search box. Then click on Imagenes, and you'll see lots of photos of rejas!! I love this method for checking on nouns that I'm not sure of; it's perfect for a question like yours.

I remember all the houses in Caracas had rejas in front of the doors and windows. They're decorative bars to prevent burglaries. We always had to be sure to lock the rejas as well as the doors and windows. That's how I remember. Verjas are like iron fences and gates around property.
