arrastrar ( ah-rrah-strahr' )

verb ( to drag, to pull; to sweep away )

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1: El cangrejito se agarró de la roca para que las olas no lo arrastraran.

The little crab clung to the rock so the waves wouldn't sweep it away.

2: No arrastres así tu mochila o se va a ensuciar.

Don't drag your backpack like that or it will get dirty.

Some people just drag on and on about their problems.

Nadie sabe de verdad cómo las estatuas en la Isla de Pascua se arrastraron fueron arrastradas a sus sitios actuales, pero esto no impide que gente proponga y pruebe teorías.

No one knows for sure how the statues on Easter Island were dragged to their current sites, but this does not stop people from proposing and testing theories.

There is no wood source on Easter Island, so it deepens the mystery :-)! - Jraider, Oct 8, 2015
I always assumed they were made of stone. - rac1, Oct 8, 2015
There were palm trees, but there are no longer- part of the mystery is what happened to the palms, were they used up moving the statues, or simply unable to reproduce due to rats that came with the settlers eating their seeds. :) - bosquederoble, Oct 8, 2015
Rac- the statues are stone, but one theory is that they were rolled along on wood logs. :) - bosquederoble, Oct 8, 2015
Thanks, Bosque. :) - rac1, Oct 8, 2015
..fueron arrastradas a..'se arrastraron' sounds like they were alive - Pablo064, Oct 8, 2015
Thanks, Pablo. I wondered about that. Then of course, native legend says that they walked themselves to their current positions. :) - bosquederoble, Oct 8, 2015
I thought they were made of stone too, how disappointing, palm-wood sounds light.. - annierats, Oct 8, 2015
No, they are stone, they may have used palm logs to move them. - bosquederoble, Oct 8, 2015
No! It was the ET aliens using their anti-grav beams projected from their UFO's that helped these primitive people. So There!!! - Daniela2041, Oct 8, 2015
As I said, several theories have been floated. No one knows the truth. It would probably take some kind of definitive archaeological find- and I am sure people have looked for it. :D - bosquederoble, Oct 8, 2015
Like you need another comment, but I have learned that the islanders destroyed their environment by wars and erecting these statues. I think I know what their political mindset was like. - Jubilado, Oct 8, 2015
I'm sure ET did it. lol - rac1, Oct 8, 2015

Amber: Can you put that into California English?? J.R. thinks it funny, but I don't get it. - Daniela2041, Oct 8, 2015
It's just a saying when someone has left. We pronounce the "pecan" like pecon. It's kind of like saying, "Elvis has left the building". jejje - rac1, Oct 8, 2015

Ya ha llegado el otoño, las noches son frescas y en el jardín el viento arrastra los hojas amarillos que han caído de los árboles. Muy pronto van a llegar las primeras lluvias de la temporada. Estoy pensando en comprarme unas botas de agua nuevas..

Autumn has now arrived, the nights are chilly and in the garden the yellow leaves that have fallen from the trees are blown about by the wind. Soon the first rainfall of the season will arrive. I'm thinking of buying myself some new Wellington boots ( wellies).

Cuando primero me levanto por la mañana, todavía tengo mucho sueño y tengo que arrastrarme a la cocina para tomar mi primera taza de café.

When I first get up in the morning I am still very sleepy and I have to drag myself to the kitchen to have my first cup of coffee.

This is sad indeed. I wanted to use this other sense of "arrastrar" which I hope is correct (Pablo may tell me). This was the first "unbearable" thing that came to mind. May they receive mercy! - Jubilado, Oct 8, 2015

No me gusta nada esta costumbre de los hombres de arrastrar así a las mujeres, pero creo que ahora las mujeres se están resistiendo a tal tratamiento.

I hate this habit of men, dragging women, but I think now women are resisting such a treatment.

Es una lastima cuando a alguien no le gusta su trabajo y tiene que arrastrarse a la oficina todos los días. Es el tiempo para encontrar un trabajo diferente, si se puede eso.

It's a shame when someone doesn't like their job and has to drag themselves to the office every day, It's time to find a different job if that's possible.

By the way, in SpanDict's definition of arrastrarse, this example is provided: "La víctima se arrastró hasta la puerta-The victim dragged himself to the door." Shouldn't that be "herself," not "himself"?
