What is alliteration?

In alliteration, consonant sounds in two or more neighboring words or syllables are repeated.
Definition

Alliteration is the repetition of initial consonant sounds in two or more words.

It's a literary device often used in poetry or prose to create a rhythmic effect.

Alliteration can also be used to add emphasis or create a mood.

Examples of alliteration

  • Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
  • The bustle of the busy bazaar.
  • The sassy siren sang softly by the sea.
  • She sells seashells by the seashore.
  • The six silly sailors sailed the seven seas.
  • I saw Susie sitting in a silver SUV.

Additional important information regarding alliteration:

  • Alliteration involves not simply repeating letters but also sounds.
  • Words that rhyme need not be placed adjacent to one another. There may be more words in between them.
  • Poetry, prose, commercial writing, such as brand names and marketing taglines, all frequently use alliteration.
