Basilica S. Nicola in Carcere

Rome, Lazio Italy

Roman Catholic

The area where the church now stands was once home to three different temples dedicated to pagan gods Janus, Iuno Sospita, and Spesonce. The church building is on the site of the temple to Janus and the interior has columns from the three Roman temples, some as old as 165 BC. The building served as a prison before becoming a church and is named for the patron saint of prisoners. Originally surounded by houses, the church is now isolated.
