Szeged finishes second in competition ranking best cities to visit in Hungary

Szeged finished as the second-best city to visit in Hungary in a competition run by Hungarian accommodation portal Szállás.hu.

The accommodation booking portal Szállás.hu runs a comprehensive competition every year and announces winners in three categories - best tourist attractions, best tourist accommodations, and best tourist cities (settlements) of Hungary.

In 2022, nearly 7,300 tourist attractions, 15,000 accommodations, and 500 settlements were competing, and at the same time, 1.6 million guest reviews and 6,000 booking votes helped the professional jury's decision.

Let's take a look at the top reasons to visit one of the most popular tourist cities in Hungary.

Top reasons to visit Szeged

Szeged is one of the top cities to visit in Hungary and is equally popular with Hungarian and international guests. The art nouveau architecture, the numerous cultural, scientific, and sports events, and the world-famous gastronomy are only some of the reasons why tourists and travelers choose to visit Hungary's third-largest city. Szeged has thermal baths, a popular public beach in the summer, as well as a zoo that leads Tripadvisor’s "top things to do in Szeged" list.

Szeged - also called the city of sunshine - offers a wide range of programs for visitors, from cultural and gastronomy festivals to various national and international sports events. Hungary's largest open-air theater festival, the Szegedi Szabadtéri, runs all summer long and offers musicals, drama, and comedy plays, as well as concerts in various genres.

The Wine Festival and the Day of Szeged Celebrations in May - usually a 10-day event - also attract thousands of tourists, as well as the SZIN music festival, or the traditional Christmas Market during the Szeged Christmas Weeks.

The city center is famous for its historic buildings, beautiful squares, statues, green parks, and a promenade by the River Tisza. Restaurants and cafés dot the picturesque downtown, catering to a wide range of tastes and budgets. Szeged has two Michelin-plate restaurants.
