ABSTRACT

It is interesting to note that the experience of Switzerland, an ‘island’ of just 7.9 million inhabitants in the centre of Europe brings a scope to draw a parallel to India. We are considering different parts of the world (Europe and Asia), different sizes of countries (Switzerland is like a city in comparison to India), different economies, and yet, there are also similarities. Just like India, Switzerland is a federal State with several national languages: German is spoken by nearly two-thirds of the population, followed by French and Italian, and Romansh is preferred by a minority of the population.
