What educators are saying

I like this simple anchor for how to annotate a text. Annotation helps students monitor their comprehension. I printed these 4 to a page and students glued them in their reading notebooks for easy reference.

Description

FOR THIRD GRADE THROUGH FIFTH GRADE- this version includes advanced close reading strategies such as citing evidence from the text and creating agree/disagree statements used as reference and speaking points during group conversations about the text. There is a line on the handout that denotes where 3rd grade might begin, while 4th and 5th grades would look for evidence and use agree/disagree statements. These are skills that would be appropriate to teach once 3rd grade students have mastered the first set of annotating marks.

FOR KINDERGARTEN THROUGH SECOND GRADE PLEASE SEE MY OTHER ANNOTATING HANDOUT LISTING.

This is a handout of an anchor chart that I use with my students to annotate their text during close reading with complex text. This should be taught first in a whole-group setting in order to thoroughly teach the symbols. Once students feel comfortable and understand the purpose and way to annotate, they can use this handout to help them annotate text independently, with partners, or in small groups.

To save paper/printing, I would print about 10 of these in color on cardstock and laminate them. In my classroom we do rotations during our literacy block so I can use these as necessary and still have enough for independent work as each group generally has 5-6 students.

This is the handout that I use in conjunction with my Close Reading student handouts on read-through #3 (Day 3)! Be sure to check that out in my store as well!
