One Direction fans the world over have gone into meltdown– after it emerged today that singer Harry Styles has (take a deep breath; wait for it) had a haircut.

The star has cut his locks into a shorter, military style for his role in Christopher Nolan’s wartime drama Dunkirk, which is currently filming in Northern France.

Photographs of the star arriving in France (with his hair concealed under a cap) and being greeted by ecstatic fans appeared earlier this month.

Earlier this year it was reported that the former X Factor star, known for his "heartthrob" status and busy love life, was being made to endure a gruelling maritime bootcamp in preparation for  the role, complete with food rations and a mobile phone ban.

"Harry is used to living the life of luxury, so this will be a very interesting experience," a source told The Sun. "He knows this boot camp at sea is a big part of the job and is keen to get stuck in.

"But this will be tough and producers are trying to make life on board as realistic as possible."

The story of the Miracle of Dunkirk, in which a fleet of British ships and boats – many of them manned by volunteers – rescued stranded Allied troops from a French beach, has become a Second World War legend.

Warner Brothers confirmed on Monday that filming had begun on Nolan’s movie.

“Principal photography on the epic action thriller Dunkirk is underway in Dunkirk, France,” read the official press release.

“Christopher Nolan (Interstellar, Inception, The Dark Knight Trilogy) is directing Dunkirk from his own original screenplay, utilizing a mixture of IMAX® and 65mm film to bring the story to the screen. The production will shoot in France, Holland, the UK and Los Angeles.

“Dunkirk opens as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.”

Other confirmed cast members include Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy and Kenneth Branagh.

Dunkirk is released on July 21 2017.
