It measures 20ins by 16ins and is thought to have formed part of a larger display in one of Antoinette’s palaces.

The mirror became a feature of the family’s toilet in the 1980s after it was passed down through inheritance.

They learned its value from auctioneer Andrew Stowe.

He said: “To think one of the most famous historical figures looked into this mirror is spellbinding.’’

A silver plaque on the mirror declares its previous owner, but the family thought it was a joke.

Marie Antoinette became queen after marrying Louis XVI in 1770.

Her mirror will be auctioned in Bristol a week on Friday.
