The Aga conjures images of cosy, well-settled domesticity, but it was George Osborne’s proposals to help first-time buyers for which the maker of the famous ovens was giving thanks yesterday.

In an annual meeting statement, the company said that it expected “increased appliance sales as homeowners move and look to remodel assisted by the Government’s encouragement of greater availability of mortgages”.

William McGrath, the former accountant at the helm of Aga Rangemaster, no doubt will be keeping his fingers crossed for sales growth. He has succeeded in boosting profits, despite falling revenues, by a series of cost-cutting measures, including a round of job losses. Mr McGrath became finance director of Glynwed International in 1997 from which
