A new charity is standing by its chosen chairman — the disgraced HBOS chief Lord Stevenson — as it sets out plans to raise millions of pounds to transform the treatment of mental illness.

MQ, which is being set up with funding from the Wellcome Trust, has confirmed that Lord Stevenson of Coddenham will remain as chairman and as a trustee of the charity.

The decision was taken after MQ trustees met to discuss the Parliamentary Banking Commission’s devastating report into the collapse of HBOS in 2008, published last week.

The report was fiercely critical of directors of the bank, including Lord Stevenson, and successive chief executives Sir James Crosby and Andy Hornby. Amid calls for the three executives to be banned from serving as
