If you are looking to add early bulk to a spring border, shrubby spirea offers a range of options, from frothy white flowers to colourful foliage, in sizes to suit every situation. Easy to grow and with clusters of spring or early summer flowers that are attractive to beneficial insects, it can be a great option. Grow in moist, well-drained soil in full sun for the best foliage and flowers, although you will get away with light, dappled shade.

Arching forms, such as Spiraea ‘Arguta’ (often referred to as bridal wreath), S. nipponica ‘Snowmound’ and S. prunifolia ‘Plena’, are the most dramatic. Their long slender limbs are densely covered with tiny white flowers during April and May and, when the shrub is allowed to assume
