Ancient woodland, steep ravines and views to Ben Lomond on a clear day — is this unaccountably quiet walk Scotland’s most underrated?

It’s hard to fathom why this lovely walk is so quiet. From Main Street car park in Saline village centre cross the road and immediately turn right down Bridge Street past a row of 18th-century stone cottages. By the old cemetery the road bends left. At Tullohill Cottage go right on to a farm track, which climbs through fields heading directly towards Saline Hill. At a bend just before Killernie Farm turn left through a gate, following a faint muddy path along the margin of several fields — a historic right of way.

Keep just left of the fence line, passing through more gates and crossing a burn by a ribbon of Scots pines to join a better-defined track beside a small quarry. Stay on
