The strikingly patterened leporinus looks equally impressive in both young and old specimens. This is a big fish however, so serious thought should be applied before purchasing. Whilst the fish are peaceful, they may fight with each other so single specimens are recommended. In nature the fish have a varied diet, and this should be reflected in the aquarium with a good mixture of food types, including some meaty foods, some vegetable foods, and dried foods. Given the opportunity, these fish will eat smaller fish so only mix with similar sized specimens. The aquarium should have large hiding holes under rocks or wood, and a strong filter is preferable. The fish does best in soft water although it will acclimate to a wide range of conditions. Ideally, the fish should be kept in similar water to that of the dealers aquarium. A very similar species, Leporinus affinis, is occasionally available and the two are easily confused. A good aquarium fish for larger tanks with big, peaceful tankmates.

The general view is that Leporinus are specialised fin eaters, and are therefore not suitable for most home aquaria.
