Environment

Property's Green Action

GUIDING PRINCIPLES
We works continually to reduce the company’s negative impact on the environment. We apply the precautionary principle in our assessment of substances and processes that may harm the environment. Scandic advocates environmental responsibility within the company and supports the development and promotion of environmentally friendly technology. Scandic supports the transition to a low-carbon society and has a holistic view of the environment in which environmental and human welfare are understood in relation to each other. Measures for sustainable development include reducing greenhouse gases at the same time as countering other types of pollution. Scandic is a signatory of the UN Global Compact and follows its policies including the three related to the environment: • Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges; • Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and • Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.

ENERGY
We work continually to reduce its energy consumption. Scandic’s hotels are monitored regularly to identify where and how the greatest energy savings can be achieved. New agreements with property owners should clarify the responsibilities of energy-saving measures. Heating and cooling hotels is energy intensive, why both comfort and environmental impact are taken into consideration for the optimal indoor temperatures. Equipment under Scandic’s control at hotels has a high energy standard and light sources are replaced with low-energy lighting.

GREENHOUSE GASES
We work continually to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by, for example, systematically measuring emissions and establishing emission reduction goals. We make informed choices when purchasing energy. Fossil fuels used under Scandic’s control are being phased out and replaced by energy from renewable sources.

TRANSPORTATION AND TRAVEL
When choosing methods of transportation and travel, we take environmental impact into account. We prioritize company cars and defined-benefit vehicles that demonstrate low carbon dioxide emissions. When ordering services that include transport, we consider environmental impact.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
Renovation and interiors shall to the greatest extent possible ensure energy efficiency and the use of materials with a low environmental impact. Solutions that enable low resource use shall be prioritized.

MATERIALS
We use a great variety of materials. We ensure that the materials used in our products are as environmentally sustainable as possible. When evaluating products, we consider the product life cycle, that is, products shall preferably be made from renewable raw materials and/or recycled materials, the use of resources and energy in their production shall be minimized and that the life of the product shall be taken into account. The use of wood from virgin forests and rainforests is prohibited. When hotels are renovated, surplus materials should be recovered. Scandic aims to contribute to a circular economy and the long-term goal is to minimize the amount of waste we generate.

ENDANGERED SPECIES AND BIODIVERSITY
Products purchased by Scandic shall not contain materials from endangered species or use materials the production of which has a direct impact on endangered species. Endangered species refers to both animals and plants. This means that we evaluate our suppliers to ensure that they live up to our Code of Conduct for Suppliers. Scandic does not serve fish or seafood that is listed as endangered or comes from a fish source near collapse. In these matters, we are guided by the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) Sustainable Seafood Guide. Palm oil shall be avoided as far as possible. Where palm oil is used, it shall be certified in accordance with the standard from the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil.

WASTE
Operating hotels generates a substantial amount of waste. Scandic continually measures the amount of waste generated in our operations and analyzes how it can be minimized. We work to limit the use of packaging materials and unnecessary materials, for example, single-use disposables. We also strive to recycle and reuse products and materials to the greatest extent possible. The waste arising from Scandic’s operations is sent to recycling or modern waste management facilities to minimize environmental impact. Scandic shall minimize the amount of food waste from our facilities and unavoidable food waste shall be composted or used for biogas to the greatest extent possible.

WATER USE
Scandic aims to reduce water use by measuring consumption and analyzing what can be done to reduce it. For example, we use water-efficient dish washers and showerheads.

CHEMICALS AND HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES
Scandic uses a minimum amount of chemicals and dangerous substances. These are handled safely and properly to protect human health and the environment. Our goal is to always use the least dangerous option and we give priority to eco-labeled products. Through wastewater, chemicals and pollutants can reach our land and water systems. Scandic works to reduce the amount of chemicals and waste that reaches wastewater, for example, through automatic dosing of cleaning products.

RESPONSIBLE PROCUREMENT
Before an agreement is signed between Scandic and a supplier, the supplier undergoes screening to ensure that it meets the requirements of Scandic’s Code of Conduct for Suppliers. Our suppliers and partners are required to sign Scandic’s Code of Conduct for Suppliers. Employees who have responsibility for procurement are trained in responsible procurement methods.

Certifications

Nordic Ecolabel

The Nordic Ecolabel is a voluntary ecolabelling scheme that evaluates a product's impact on the environment throughout the whole life cycle. The label guarantees among other things that climate requirements are taken into account, and that CO2 emissions and other harmful gasses are limited. The purpose is to reduce environmental impact by setting criteria that encourage:

• Operations with low energy consumption
• Operations that use chemicals with a low environmental impact and have a low water consumption
• Sorting and recycling of waste
• Restaurants with a high proportion of organic food and beverages
• Adopt a lifecycle approach to its work on the environment towards a sustainable society

I think the key attraction here is it's location which is very strategic. The hotel is in the shopping center with the Oslo Central Station right at the next door. Very recommended if you're planning to explore the city just by walking.

The location is great, right in the shopping center and train station near by, you barely need to walk far to get anywhere. Views are OK, since my room was on the 4th floor, I didn't get the best views like people on the higher floor would get. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Breakfast was excellent, wish I had that type of breakfast every day. (Breakfast is served at the restaurant near by). Wi-Fi worked great, no issues.

Place is extremely quiet at night not a single noise, but i could hear my neighbors during the day though and in the corridor.

It's not the cheapest option. Room could be cleaned more consistently (ie I had a dead bug on the window sill, that never been cleaned up during my entire stay, even though it was clearly visible)

Good hotel near the Central station. Easy to reach 20 minutes from airport by train. Comfortable rooms with all comfort. Quiet. Restaurant in adjacent Egon restaurant

Hotel in the middle of Oslo city, next to the railway station and a shopping mall. Perfect for taking city exploration trips. We had a family room with 4 beds, it was okay for sleeping but we wished it was a bit more spacious. Breakfast is next door at Egon's and very good. Facilities in the hotel are limited, there's a lounge and a small gym.

I'd stay in a Scandic anywhere. Professional, full service, with a nicely appointed if tiny room. Best of all - and I apologise if this is a secret - free onsite laundry of you're willing to babysit it in the housekeeping area.

If you want a good hotel for business that is relatively cheap and centrally located for Oslo you could do a lot worse than this one. That said this is a no-frills hotel so don't expect the Ritz-Carlton

Excellent location in Oslo Central Station area with great communication just outside the door.
The rooms are modern and comfortable.
Complimentary breakfast is simple but good, may be a bit crowded in "breakfast rush hour".
Overall a very nice hotel and I will most likely be back.

It can occasionally be confusing; the fact there are two individual Scandic properties directly across the street from one another. This Scandic - the Byporten is the one directly attached to the shopping centre and railway station.

When you first enter, especially during a late afternoon, you might think you've made a huge mistake as you try to wind your way through swirling crowds of young people, gathering in the 'Bar' area of the hotel. The truth is that there's no difference between Reception and the Bar... hence the confusion.
I had booked and pre-paid for a 'suite' for my daughter and myself just after the Christmas weekend. I booked direct through the Scandic fidelity scheme called Scandic Friends. Yet, regardless of my perfect use of the miracles of modern technology, the clerk at reception claimed we had no reservation. Despite spelling my simple surname three times, she kept insisting we had no reservation. She demanded my passport, which I politely handed over, along with my mobile phone showing the email confirmation we received from Scandic. She typed the booking number in and voila! We had a booking.
Neither of us had to walk any further than the small bathroom because we could see the single beds pushing into the hallway....
Back to reception we went...I pointed out that I had prepaid for a 2-room suite with separate bedrooms.. The clerk perused the details, then excused herself, disappearing into the back. Eventually she returned, saying nothing to either of us and began typing again on her computer console....She then handed me a new key and told me we were now on different floors.
I've attached the photos of the room. I'm not sure if you're familiar with France's often memorable (for all the wrong reasons) Formule 1 Hotel chain, or perhaps america's often dubious Motel 6 properties.... This Scandic (as well as the above mentioned hotel groups) are the Ryanair's of hoteliers. It's like pay your fifty bucks, pick up your folding chair and you're on your way!
Several months before we stayed at the 'other' Scandic across the street. I really enjoyed it. It was intimate and it was certainly minimalistic, but it, in my opinion, was far nicer than its sister hotel. If you're looking for mid-range quality, or upper-range quality, choose a Thor hotel or one of the Radissons.
We cut our stay short, thankfully. I must say, however, that the breakfast, served across the entrance from the Scandic was lovely and plentiful! That I certainly do recommend.
We love Norway. We truly do and we both recognise that occasionally mistakes can happen. However, at this Scandic there were simply too many mistakes. During the night we started to exit our room to go downstairs for a bite to eat and immediately I found myself trying to catch myself as I fell over a portable vacuum someone had left literally against our door. And if you look at the photos, you may or may not agree that for a 'suite,' there's very little there to suggest that the amount you paid was commensurate with what you've paid for.
Sorry Scandic - for this particular property I must give it a pass & a fail. In fairness of reporting I must say the following morning we received a call from a Duty Managers. He was apologising for the problems and how we had been treated at registration (we never complained to anyone, so it must have been another employee who witnessed what happened.) He told me that we should ask for him when we came down to check-out. It turned out that he was the very person manning the desk when we checked out. He again apologised and said he was going to make an adjustment on our bill. I thanked him, saying it wasn't necessary. But he disagreed and said it was important for them to do this. Interestingly, I waited a couple of months to see if a credit ever came back onto my Amex card....nothing materialised. Oh well.
Don't be influenced by my comments when coming to Norway. It's an amazing country with even more amazing people! Whether we're in Oslo, Bergen, Tromsø or anywhere else. The moment we land, we feel we're at home!

I had a really nice stay here during a 2 day trip to Oslo. Location is super convenient - right inside Byporten centre next to the central station, also with great views of the city from the rooms. Everything was clean and safe with all basic amenities needed. Staff were really welcoming and helpful. Breakfast served at the Egon restaurant next door was delicious!

Kind ,quiet if you have luck with neighbours.(thin walls, rooms close to each other).Public transport is literally next to you(transport hub with metro, buses etc are a few steps away), also very convenient as everything is close as it shares the building with a shopping mall/train station,. Delicious and full breakfast .Overall good quality food service.

Location was brilliant, right beside the train station and the main city shopping areas. Staff very friendly. Had booked a standard double room but for some reason was given a family room with fold up bunk beds. As the room was small the beds being down left the room really compact, took a while to figure out how to fold it up but once that was up I had no complaints

Ideally located in close proximity to Oslo Central, the Scandic Byporten is a superb 'resting house' when you are in town (Oslo) on business or enjoying a break.
It is walking distance from the City Centre. The trains, buses and trams all pass by regularly.
Breakfast is great (am not a breakfast eater but sparse or big meals are both on offer) inside a 'wooden building' that reminds me of a 'saloon in the WIld West'.
Courteous service delivered with a smile at all times.

Scandic Byporten is located very good. The parking facilities is good and good communication. Temperature is adjusted from reception but immediate answer and adjustment did the trick. The staff is flexible when reservations are made and the breakfast at Egon next door is of high quality. WiFi is also really good.

We stayed here one night for a concert. Our previous stay here was excellent, but this time unfortunately it was not. We had a superior extra room, and these should include bathrobes, but we hadn't received any. We called the reception and they said they would bring them. When they didn't come we called again and were told it could take some time. Poor service! We had paid for a room that were supposed to include bathrobes. And another unfortunate incident, in the middle of the night, we awoke by dripping water on my head.. A water leak caused by a drunk guest on the floor above. Not the hotels fault! We were provided with another room promptly, however it was a smaller room (full hotel, we are waiting to hear back about compensation) An eventful night to say the least. Everything else was all right, the breakfast was excellent as always on Scandic.

The hotel is fresh with modern interior. The staff are kindly and they offer free WiFi, gym and a great breakfast. The buss and train station, Oslo spectrum or the tram station are at most a five minute walk away.

Unfortunately are the "big beds" only two 90cm beds pushed together and they have a tendency to separate during the night...

Nice Scandic standard hotel, few meters from the central station. Didn't eat there because of late arrival and leaving very early.
