Providence, the owners of St. Joseph Hospital and Redwood Memorial Hospital, gave Life Plan Humboldt $25,000 for their longstanding effort to develop a McKinleyville copse into a senior living housing complex.

Life Plan Humboldt is currently raising the funds required to complete the 204-home facility with wraparound services, medical care and social activities. Ann Lindsay, Life Plan Humboldt’s president, estimated last September that she expects the facility to open by 2027.

“Life Plan Humboldt is thrilled to receive this support from Providence to help us build a not-for-profit, resident led, mixed income community for residents 60 and older,” Lindsay in a press release. “We will offer independent private residences, shared dining and activities, health care support, assisted living and memory care all in one location.

Life Plan Humboldt needs millions more to reach an ability to get bond funds and they’ve committed to buying the14.58-acre plot of McKinleyville land once they are financially able to proceed. Last September, Life Plan Humboldt received a $1.4 million grant from the state for the project.

Humboldt County’s senior population is slated to dramatically spike according to a 2022 civil grand jury report, which found that residents older than 65 made up 18.6% of Humboldt County’s population and they expected that number to reach 36% by the end of the decade.

“As Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka and Providence Redwood Memorial Hospital continue to offer high quality acute care to our North Coast communities, we also realize the importance of aging in place and helping community members stay healthy at home,” Providence Community Health Investment Director Martha Shanahan said in a press release. “We applaud the efforts of Life Plan Humboldt to bring the first ever planned community for seniors to Humboldt County.”
