Alcohol may have played a role in an early morning fatal crash in St. Croix County Saturday, police say.

Scott A. Gossel, 36, of Wilson, Wis., was driving a 2002 Ford F-250 east on U.S. 12 in Baldwin, Wis. shortly after midnight when he lost control of the truck.

A preliminary investigation revealed the truck entered the south ditch, went over Bridge Avenue, struck a stop sign and crashed into a power pole. Gossel was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was not wearing a seat belt. Alcohol is a possible factor in the crash, according to the St. Croix County sheriff’s office.

This is the first fatality for the county in 2019.
