Vin Scully asks what a hashtag is, then becomes one

Justin L. Abrotsky, USA TODAY Sports

Living monument to the grandeur of baseball Vin Scully doesn't know everything, and he's not afraid to admit it and ask you, the viewer, for help.

Veteran Dodgers announcer Vin Scully in the broadcast booth before the start of of game two of the 2008 National League Championship Series at Citizens Bank Park.

For example, after promoting a Twitter poll during the Dodgers' 4-3 win at San Diego, Scully added, "Can I ask you an honest question, just between you and me? What in the world is a hashtag?"

Scully then randomly goes on to question the fiscal viability of DOGTV, a channel designed for dogs to watch. "How do you sell a sponsor to a pet?" he asks. Scully also wonders whether cats can watch.

It's 90 seconds of broadcasting gold and an example of how some of the best calls in baseball can come during slower parts of middle innings and are generally not about baseball at all.

Not one to leave the great Scully hanging, the Internets responded to his Twitter question by making Scully himself a hashtag.

Scully swiftly trended nationally, and then worldwide, alongside such temporarily fascinating topics as #ThreeWordsSheWantsToHear and #NationalSiblingDay.

Sadly, no crowdsourced response that I saw explained whether cats could, in fact, watch DOGTV. Maybe we'll find out during Thursday's broadcast.
