Funeral services for Howard Baker, a former Senate majority leader and White House chief of staff, will be held Tuesday in his hometown of Huntsville, Tenn.

Baker, a Republican who represented Tennessee for 18 years in the U.S. Senate, died Thursday at the age of 88 from complications of a stroke suffered days earlier. He was known as the "Great Conciliator" for his ability to forge common ground between Republicans and Democrats.

As vice chairman of the committee investigating Watergate, Baker posed the now-famous question about the scandal that engulfed Richard Nixon's presidency: "What did the president know and when did he know it?"

Baker will lie in repose at the public policy center that bears his name at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville on Monday from 11 a.m. ET to 4 p.m. ET.  Matt Murray, director of the Baker Center for Public Policy, said the former senator "will always represent what is good about those who serve our country unselfishly."

The funeral will be held Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Huntsville at 1 p.m. ET. Sen. Lamar Alexander, Tennessee's senior senator and a former governor, will be among the eulogists. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell will be among those in attendance.
