Detailed Description

Microcystis aeruginosa, shown above, was the cyanobacteria responsible for the harmful algal boom that hit Florida last year. This species, which can make a liver damaging toxin,  is one of the most common forms of cyanobacteria. Photo by Barry Rosen, USGS.
