Symphyogyna is a genus with 4 representatives in Tasmania.
S. hymenophyllum is the most common of the four Tasmanian
species and
has previously been called S. podophylla. When well developed, this
species may easily be mistaken for
Hymenophyton
flabellatum but usually has a wider thallus and less
branching than the latter species. Less well-developed or
irregularly lobed specimens can easily be mistaken for
Podomitrium but Podomitrium has wavy margins while S.
hymenophyllum has toothed ones.
A more uncommon species, S.
interrupta, has an unbranched thallus
consisting of narrow and broad sections.
Two additional species S. lehmanniana and S. rhodina,
are very poorly known and requires further clarification on their
taxonomic validity.
