In the dark ages of AOL Instant Messenger, lo those many years ago, the away message was the ultimate barometer of what was going on in a person’s life. Inside jokes, angsty song lyrics, pointed shoutouts to your nearest and dearest—these self-selected epitaphs were a rich text. Now, we have Instagram Stories and captions on posts to do that for us, and that seems to be exactly how Gisele Bündchen is using her social media accounts. A recent Story post from the supermodel has the world wondering if she’s trying to tell us something about her ex-husband, Tom Brady, or if she maybe just found a nice quote that she liked and thought we might too.

On April 1, Bündchen posted a quote attributed to Brazilian writer Wandy Luz on her stories, sharing both the English and Brazilian translations.

“You look at a person and can’t imagine the story they carry—the pains, traumas, fears,” the quote reads. “Just as we can’t even imagine how strong, capable, and resilient someone is, behind smiles and glances are achievements and victories; there are people and moments they overcome and dreams and desires to be achieved. There’s so much you’ll never know. So, be kind whenever you can.”

It could just be a nice thought that the 43-year-old wanted to share with her followers. Maybe! But the post also came just days after Gisele confirmed that she’s in a new relationship, her first public one since splitting up with Brady in October 2022. In the same interview, with the New York Times, she denied cheating on Brady during their marriage: “That is a lie,” she said of the accusations. Her new beau is reportedly jujitsu trainer, Joaquim Valente, whom she praised, along with his two brothers, for training herself and her children in the martial art. They started as friends, with Bündchen telling Vanity Fair in a March 2023 cover interview that she knew dating rumors were inevitable.

“I think, at this point, unfortunately, because I’m divorced, I’m sure that they’re going to try to attach me to anything,” she said, then turned her attention back to Valente and his brothers. “I’m so grateful to know all of them, because not only have they helped me and helped my kids, but they have become great friends, and Joaquim especially. He’s our teacher and, most importantly, he’s a person that I admire and that I trust. It’s so good to have that kind of energy, to have my kids around that type of energy.”

In the recent Times interview, she said of her new flame, “This is the first time I am seeing someone that was a friend of mine first. It’s very different. It is very honest, and it’s very transparent.”

It was with that same hard-won knowledge that people will talk, no matter what, attitude that Bündchen addressed the persistent public speculation about what happened in her split with Brady, and who was to blame.

“This is something that happens to a lot of women who get blamed when they have the courage to leave an unhealthy relationship and are labeled as being unfaithful,” she said. “They have to deal with their communities. They have to deal with their family. Of course for me, it just happens to be a little bit amplified.”

She continued: “No one really knows what happens between two people, only the two people in the relationship.”

Brady, for his part, has also appeared to find people to spend time with in the 18 months or so since their divorce. Last summer, he was spotted looking close with Irina Shayk, noted ex of actor Bradley Cooper.

A rep for Bündchen did not immediately return Vanity Fair's request for comment.
