“Glamour isn’t an attitude, it’s a lifestyle," Lady Gaga tells Vogue. In other words, the challenges of this time weren't going to stop the pop superstar from going full Gaga at tonight's MTV Video Music Awards—especially during her high-octane Chromatica era.

Taking the stage to serve up a medley of hits—including the world premiere performance of "Rain on Me" alongside Ariana Grande—Gaga brought the drama wearing a transparent orb shield and an equal parts bold and bronzed makeup look painted on by her longtime makeup artist Sarah Tanno. "She took us through all the dimensions of Chromatica—it was a little bit retro... a little bit industrial... a little bit punk," explains Tanno. "For her glam, I just wanted her to look really beautiful and modern." The pair ultimately settled on bronzed rose smoky eyes, shimmering tawny cheeks, and a '90s-inspired, heavily-contoured deep pink pout. "It really went with her teal hair and everything she wore for the evening," Tanno notes.

To create her bulletproof metallic gaze, Tanno began by smudging Haus Laboratories' new long-wear Eye-Dentify gel liner in jet-black Punk along the top lash line and into the crease as a base, before blending Antique Rose all over the lid and further defining Gaga's gaze with liquid liner and stacks of false lashes. For a celestial strobe effect on the skin, she then applied rose gold Applause eyeshadow from the Fame palette under the brow bones and along the cheekbones. To finish the look, she lined the lips in dusty rose before tracing them in RIP Lip liner in “Rule” and slicking on Le Riot Lip Gloss in icy, translucent blue “Glass Slipper."

On the heels of the hype around Gaga's statement-making eye makeup look for the "Rain on Me" music video, which catalyzed the current craze around white eyeliner, Tanno sought to turn out an iconic makeup moment that could be replicated by fans, particularly during this time when face masks put a special emphasis on the eyes. "I love seeing people recreate looks and this is a special moment I hope people will embrace," says Tanno. Mission complete!
