Are perms making a comeback? According to actresses Lola Kirke and Emma Stone, the answer is yes. This week on Instagram, Stone’s longtime makeup artist Rachel Goodwin posted a behind-the-scenes look at she and Stone getting perms at the hands of cool-girl celebrity hairstylist, Mara Roszak of Mare Salon, confirming the polarizing style “is back!”

Perhaps Stranger Things’s Millie Bobby Brown and her coiled bob in Season 2 is to blame, or the voluminous mullets that reigned supreme on Off White’s Spring 2018 runway. Either way, the lengthy process, which takes 2 hours and “a few days to settle in,” says Roszak, makes for great social media fodder. Fortunately, Goodwin documented the treatment in its entirety, with a slideshow of images portraying the duo getting their hair washed and twisted and set with a series of wide foam rollers (the width of the rods is key, says Roszak, if you want natural-looking results). “Some friends get tattoos, well, we get perms!” captioned Goodwin. “ . . . And they’re not your grandma’s perm!”

And Stone and Goodwin aren’t the only ones diving headfirst into the trend. A single trip through the salon’s social media page finds Kirke sporting her take on the nostalgic style, with a head full of effortless waves that bounce and fall as if she spent the afternoon on the beach. The reason to commit to curls until summer—the treatment can last up to four months, says Roszak—is still unclear; for the actresses, it could very well be for a new role in a throwback film. Nevertheless, with another fashion season here, and the Oscars just a few weeks away, where Stone and her kinky head of hair will present the award for Best Actress, here’s to even more twisted takes on the once lost but never forgotten perm.
