Katrina Kaif's makeup artist Daniel Bauer, who also works with celebrities including Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, reveals that the makeup look for promotions of a 2021 movie starring Katrina Kaif were particularly special as the original release date was pushed for almost two years due to Covid. “One of the most stand out looks from the entire promotional series was the 'Smoky Kat-Eye'. Katrina is somebody who can rock any western or Indian look. Dressed in Sabyasachi, we wanted the look to be sophisticated, traditional, but 100% in line with Katrina’s beauty, which is all about being herself and keeping it as natural as possible. Katrina does not like to sit in the makeup chair for too long, so being planned and prepared works for everyone. She is an incredible person to work with, and has a phenomenal understanding of makeup.” The key, says Bauer, to any great makeup look is blending and focusing on the littlest details, ones you can’t even see, but these details make the biggest impact on the overall look.

“Makeup is about balancing and correcting. Eye shapes highly impact the nature, intensity and build-ability of the smoky eye. For Katrina, we like to open up the gaze with a soft brown eyeshadow for a dramatic effect, while also opening up the outer edges of her eyes to create a full, more rounded almond eye. The look needs to work both, on and off-camera,” shares Katrina Kaif's makeup artist Bauer. For Kaif’s look, Bauer used some of his all-time favourite products, ones that he has been using over the years. A trick that Bauer often likes to use for his eye looks is to use a concealer as the base for the eyeshadow rather than an eye primer. Bauer says that he is a huge fan of Make Up For Ever’s Nudes You Need Palette as it gives him a great base to start building up the layers of the smoky eye. Danessa Myricks Beauty is also the latest addition to his arsenal. A smokey eye is best built up with patience, as all the hues need to come together with ease and balance. Bauer also likes using the Kay Beauty Eyeshadow Palette in Bare Soul, and shares that the shades are Kaif’s personal favourite, "So it’s like having a 100 per cent customised eyeshadow palette with Katrina’s favourite shades."

  1. I first prepped the inner corners with white cream from the Make Up Forever palette.
  2. On top, I applied Danessa Myricks Enlight powder shimmer, again, just in the inner corners. By adding light tones on the inner corners, other shades of the smoky eye appear more intense.
  3. While a conventional smoky is oval, I made the outer edges tapered to flow into a liner which makes the eyes appear like perfect almonds.
  4. Here, I built up the liner from darker to light, opening up the eye, creating the almond shape, while also creating the drama for a smoky effect.
  5. I finished the looks with a few single lashes, individually cut to size, following the eye shape. Do a double coat of mascara, using an eyelash separator to ensure the lashes are fully separated and there are no clumps of mascara. Leaning and full lashes always look better on a smoky eye, again to help open it up.
