Microsoft operating chief Kevin Turner is leaving to become CEO of trading firm Citadel Securities

Turner had served as head of Microsoft’s sales team for the past 11 years.

Kevin Turner, the former Walmart executive who has led Microsoft’s sales team for the past 11 years, is leaving the software giant to become CEO of Chicago-based trading firm Citadel Securities.

Turner held the title of Chief Operating Officer at Microsoft, but his role was less that of a typical COO and more that of sales chief. Microsoft said he would leave the software maker "after a short transition period."

"He built the sales force into the strategic asset it is today with incredible talent while at the same time more than doubling our revenue and driving customer satisfaction scores to the highest in company history," Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in a memo to Microsoft employees.

Nadella said that Microsoft plans to split Turner’s responsibilities among five different executives. Microsoft International head Jean-Philippe Courtois will take over global sales and marketing, while Judson Althoff will lead Microsoft’s relationships with large customers.

Marketing chief Chris Capossela will add responsibilities for Microsoft’s relationships with computer makers as well as oversight of Microsoft retail efforts and its relationships with third-party stores.

Corporate strategy head Kurt DelBene will add IT and operations to his portfolio while CFO Amy Hood will add Microsoft’s licensing team to her purview.

Cortois and Althoff will also join Nadella’s senior leadership team.

Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly characterized Citadel Securities as a hedge fund. It is a market making trading business.
