No you can only use ready made coffee pods.

can you use a separate basket for the coffee, rather than a pod?

Caffitaly capsules sold worldwide apparently will work. They are sold in the USA through CBTL, the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. They are delicious. Look for online videos about it. Check your warranty regarding the issue as well. Good luck!

Do other pods like Keurig work in the Starbucks Verismo 580 System?

Convenient coffee server without waiting

This is my first latte machine, and it works fantastic. Just as great as Starbucks, Love it. Great coffee too. Easy to use and makes a great professional latte.

Great Coffee

After having our 3rd Keurig kick the bucket we decided to try the Verismo 580. Best decision ever! There is no comparison between the two as far as flavor, ease of use, speed and price! Now the coffee pods are a bit expensive but worth every penny. My husband loves all the brewed coffee flavors, especially the veranda blend and I love the caffe latte, an espresso pod and a milk pod with a squirt or two of the cinnamon dolce syrup. We are definitely not coffee connoisseurs, only drink a cup in the morning, but when it's this good you have to write about it! So easy, so fast, small, sleek machine and you'll have your caffe latte ready to drink in about 10 seconds! After making a cup, the pod drops into a reservoir that holds about 10 of the used pods. So you just dump those out and rinse the reservoir/drain and it's clean. One thing I was confused about is when you first turn it on everyday the espresso light is the only light that lights up. That is because it wants you to rinse the machine before your first cup everyday. Takes 5 seconds. The only thing I can think of negative is that it's louder than the Keurig, but it's so fast and so much better that I am not complaining. If you're on the fence about whether to switch from Keurig or a regular brewer to the Verismo don't hesitate, you will love it!

Fastest and Best Coffee Ever!

Fantastic Product

I shopped around for this machine and found it offered at many different prices. Walmart's price was the lowest. Shop around, and if you don't find it at a better price, buy from Walmart. Their service was prompt; I had my machine before the estimated ship date.

What about the machine? I've read a lot of reviews, here and elsewhere. People seem to be passionate about it one way or the other. They either love it or hate it. Put me in the "love it" camp -- with one reservation. The machine itself is beautifully engineered. It's compact and will fit in a small space. It looks jazzy, and it works perfectly. You must flush the machine each time you turn it on, as others have mentioned. This is not a problem; flushing the machine takes no more than a few seconds, and you will know there will be no residue from last time.

The machine makes four drinks: coffee, tea, espresso, and latte. I have not tried the tea, so I cannot comment on it. The coffee and espresso are simply wonderful. I have never been a Starbucks fan. I have nothing against them; I am simply not a coffee house person. This machine has made me a Starbucks addict. Don't look for me at your local Starbucks, however; I can get Starbucks coffee and espresso at home, thanks to this machine.

Now about the latte. Here is my biggest reservation about the Verismo. The Starbucks milk pods are less than satisfactory, so the latte is less than satisfying. It's weak and tastes watery. Do what others have suggested -- don't use the milk pods. Put real milk in a glass or cup, microwave it until it's hot, then add the espresso from the Verismo. That will give you a perfectly delightful latte, at the cost of a few extra steps.

A few more reservations, minor ones (for me): The Verismo only accepts Starbucks pods, the pods are not reusable, they are expensive, and you will not find them at the grocery store. But these are not deal breakers. All in all, I am very satisfied with my purchase, and I recommend the Verismo wholeheartedly.

This Machine Has Made Me A Starbucks Addict

I received the Starbucks Verismo 580 system as a Christmas gift from my husband and I love it. It makes great tasting Starbucks espresso and coffee. I am also able to make tea from this machine, the water fills and leaks quickly so I dump it 3 times in making one fairly large cup of tea to avoid spills. Overall great product and I recommend to everyone.

Less time needed and less money to use the instant Starbucks single cup packets!!!
I did not realize I would have very few choices of coffee pods varieties and that they are only sold online or in the Starbucks store for a higher price than Keurig pods (can not be used because of size) which can be purchased in grocery store.
I must admit the appearance is beautiful but I'm not happy with the system
