Anne Arundel County police arrest two suspects in the theft of a school bus.

24-year-old Travis Champagne and 24-year-old Nicole Adams are accused of breaking into a parking lot in Crownsville and taking off with the bus after crashing through a gate at the lot.

Police say the bus is used to transport special needs students to school.

The theft was reported about 5:30 Tuesday morning from the lot on Generals HIghway.

Police conducted a massive search for the bus, which was found abandoned by the county police Aviation Unit.

Police found the bus just before 9 a.m. near Governor Bridge Road and Strawberry Run in Davidsonville.

Police say the suspects struck a BGE tower, crashed into a wooded area and tried to set the bus on fire.

Police say the suspects were captured on video surveillance from the bus and tips led officers to a home in the 700 block of Governor’s Bridge Road where the suspects were arrested.

Police report the suspects had been drinking and were apparently looking for change to buy cigarettes.

Both Champagne and Adams are charged with burglary, theft over $100,000, destruction of property over $100,000 and attempt arson.
