New rare white alligator to be moved to Audubon Aquarium of the Americas
A new rare white alligator will call the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas home.The Audubon Nature Institute said the new unnamed white alligator will be moved into the Mississippi River Gallery at the Audubon Aquarium. The alligator is one of a pair found by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries in 2009.The alligator has been at a private facility on the west bank of New Orleans until Thursday's announcement. Two other white alligators, "Two Spot" and "Antoine Blanc," call New Orleans home and reside at the Audubon Zoo in Uptown.Thursday's announcement comes days after the aquarium's previous white alligator named "Spots" died Monday at the age of 28. We are thankful to have an opportunity to continue to inspire future generations with our newest addition."The Audubon Nature Institute said out of the 5 million American alligators, there are believed to be fewer than 15 gators with the same genetic condition. The alligators are vulnerable to the sun and predators, as with any other white animals.Officials said a naming contest will be announced for the new alligator in the next few weeks.
