A native to dry areas of Eurasia and northern Africa.

Flowers

The flowers are in whorls on a leafy stem.

Leaves

Elliptic oval leaf. Oval. The soft, crinkly leaf surface is grey-green with serrated margins to 5 cm long.

Fruits Seeds

Nut: each flower has 4 small nuts enclosed within the calyx that splits open and releases the seed when ripe.

Edible

In the form of tea, not unlike mint tea.

Medical

Whole plant: a strong expectorant first used as a cough remedy in ancient Egypt. Today sold in the form of candy which is sucked to relieve chesty coughs or bronchitis.
