The young stamens, long and pale-brown, resemble a beard; on maturing they stand upright ready for insects to carry away the pollen.

Flowers

Flowers are fragrant, small with 6 white petals, each petal finely divided into narrow lobed plumes. The green sepals are covered in fine white hair and form a star at the back of the flower.

Leaves

Elliptic oval leaf, Spatulate broad end of the leaf tapers to the point of connection with the plant stem. Oval with a broad base, undulated margins, sometimes 1-2 lobes at the base.

Fruits Seeds

Capsule: oblong, tip of fruit with 3 points, topped with large sepals.

Edible

Leaves: cooked or raw.
