Description

The plant feels rough when touched as it is covered in down-turned bristles which stick to anything that passes by, this being a way of dispersing the seeds.

Since ancient times, Rubia tinctoria (Dyer’s Madder), a close relative, has been used as a red dye for leather and cloth.

Flowers

Small flowers, 5-petalled, pale yellowish-green arranged at the top of long stalks.

Leaves

Whorled cluster of leaves encircle the stem. Clusters of 4-7 leaves encircling the stem at the same height, oval-elliptical.

Fruits Seeds

Berry: first green, then black when ripe.
