Expert tasting note: (2022 vintage) "Deep, dark, opaque black-purple in color. Aromas of cassis fruit & cedary oak have licorice overtones. The palate is closed at first and understated, opening to reveal a core of tary, bitter-licorice fruit. Very fine tannins overlay a graphite element on the licorice flavors. Warming alcohol is balanced. Juicy black-fruit on the finish is balanced by a slightly drying tannic note at the end." - 04/23 DCAMW

Deep in color, with a simple swirl you find wet forest floor, cigar box, licorice, spice, flowers, and currants in the perfume. On the palate, the wine is concentrated, rich and dense, but refined, round. and juicy. Even with all that weight, the wine is vibrant, energetic, long and fresh, The finish builds in intensity, leaving you with layers of dark black, red and blue fruits, chocolate, licorice, espresso. and spice. 2022 marks the first vintage Gruaud Larose was organically certified. The wine is a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc.13.65% ABV, 3.8 pH. Picking took place September 7 - September 24. Yield were 30 hectoliters per hectare. Drink from 2027-2060. 95-97 Pts.

Die Nase ist tiefgründig, komplex, wirkt "toskanischer" als der 2000er, der deutlich kühler daherkam, Weihnachtsgewürze, balsamische Noten, dunkle Beeren, Granatapfel. Der Gaumen ist zugänglich, zeigt deutlich Struktur, die Balance aus Frucht, Säure und Tannin stimmt, wirkt noch immer ziemlich wild und jugendlich, kann definitiv reifen, hat aber nicht den Charme des 2000ers. Kräftiges Rubin, fast keine Alterstöne. In der Nase ein herrlicher Duft, dunkle Frucht, florale Töne, Erde, Schwarztee, baut mit Luft deutlich aus, wird immer feinduftiger, nobler. Im Gaumen straff, sehr gut strukturiert, noch immer mit Gerbstoff ausgestattet, die Säure stützt die Frucht zusätzlich, schwarze Johannisbeeren, Kirschen, nach ca. einer Stunde Belüften gewinnt der Wein deutlich an Harmonie. Der Gaumen ist zugänglich, auf den Punkt gereift, feines Tannin, delikate Frucht, aromatisch rotfruchtig und mit einem Tick Krautigkeit im Abgang ist dieser Wein weniger druckvoll als der 2000er, jedoch aktuell mit sehr viel Trinkfluss ausgestattet. Cigar box, smoke, herbs, cassis, espresso and blackberries with a savory edge open the wine aromatically. The palate offers freshness, layers of ripe, spicy currants and peppery blackberries with chewy tannins that really hang with you, providing length, vibrancy and refinement in the finish. This is going to age and evolve for decades. Drink from 2027-2060.

Tasted: Jan 2023
(2023) 13.6% alcohol, 14% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 83% Cabernet Sauvignon. There’s a hint of wood on the nose at first, but this goes and it’s then so pure. Loaded with ripe fruit, like the LLC, and it feels like it’s punching at a similar level. Not a hair out of place and impressively low alcohol. (JH). Tasted en primeur so score is provisional.

Deep, dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, subtly brighter at the rim. Intense dark fruits of the forest, hints of black cherry, a touch of herbs, precious oak and candied orange zest. Complex, juicy, ripe plums, fresh acidity, mineral-salty finish. Shows good length, and is a versatile, energetic food companion with definite ageing potential.

Deep, dark, almost opaque ruby-red in color. The nose displays brooding dark fruit & leafy touches. The palate is quite closed up, but displays some dark-cherry fruit with overtones of graphite. The wine is of mid-weight. The alcohol is well in balance & the acidity gives some good freshness. The fine tannins support a relatively long finish. 10/23 DCAMW

Deep, dark, opaque black-purple in color. Aromas of cassis fruit & cedary oak have licorice overtones. The palate is closed at first and understated, opening to reveal a core of tary, bitter-licorice fruit. Very fine tannins overlay a graphite element on the licorice flavors. Warming alcohol is balanced. Juicy black-fruit on the finish is balanced by a slightly drying tannic note at the end. 04/23 DCAMW

Medium to deep ruby red, with dark pigmentation. The aromas are intense, but currently weedy/leafy notes & touches of cedar & graphite overpower the cassis fruit. The wine is at best medium bodied. Alcohol is balanced & the acidity seems a touch low. The finish is quite thin & watery. The intensity of the aromas suggest the wine might open a little with time, but currently it is very awkward & angular. 11/98 DCAMW

The fruit on the palate is quite closed, with ripe dark fruit overlaid by a fine, soft, velvety tannins. The palate is of mid-weight with fresh acidity lifting the fruit. Medium to deep-ruby color is quite darkly pigmented. The aromas are restrained black-fruit with ripe notes of chocolate & raisin. Dense, dark fruit on the palate is supported by good acidity & has a chocolatey fruit character. Tannins are very smooth & the length is excellent.
