Largest gathering of Elvis impersonators record attempt to be made in Augusta
Elvis is in the building -- and Elvis, as well as another Elvis. The Augusta Civic Center will be attempting to break the record for largest gathering of Elvis Impersonators later this summer.The Guinness World Record breaking attempt will be made during National Elvis Week on Aug. 15 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.The location honors Elvis Presley's only Maine performance on May 24, 1977 at the Civic Center, which is holding its 50th anniversary celebration."There is no greater moment, milestone, and memory for our community and beyond than Elvis’ only Maine performance, held here at the Augusta Civic Center. To commemorate this, we are so excited that our proposal was accepted by Guinness World Records™ to attempt to break the current record," Civic Center Director, Margaret Noel, said.Organizers are hoping to reach 1,200 participants, with Maine's Elvis tribute artist Jessi Mallory as the emcee for the date. The current record for Elvis impersonators was made at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort in 2014, and consisted of 895 impersonators. The Civic Center is asking participants to bring donations of non-perishable food items or personal hygiene products to help increase inventory at service agencies. Anyone can participate.
