Seltzer is an all-star beverage. Cold, refreshing, and deliciously bubbly, it’s a healthy swap for soda or stand-in for sparkling wine. Sparkling water is expected to become a $67.6 billion industry by 2030. And it seems like every day, new brands come out with added bonuses like fresh juice, adaptogens, or probiotics.

But which brand has the best sparkling water? The Women’s Health Test Kitchen cracked over a dozen cans from well-loved brands—and polled nutrition experts—to find out. Considerations included the strength of each can’s bubbles, the quality of the flavor, and the sipper’s overall satisfaction.

Below, find the top bubbles to throw back, whether you’re looking for a cold one to crack at the end of the day (abv-free bubbles are a great way to cut back on alcohol) or you’re a seltzer devotee hunting for a new flavor.

Peep a few of the best sparkling water brands, below:

Before you ask: Yes, sparkling water is healthy! While seltzer is artificially carbonated using carbon dioxide and sparkling water is naturally carbonated or lightly artificially carbonated, says SaVanna Shoemaker, MS, RDN, LD, either is a smart pick: “Generally, I think sparkling water is a better choice because it's closer to nature, but an unsweetened or lightly flavored seltzer is still a better choice than a sugary soda.”

And not all brands are created equal. Choose bubbles that are low in sodium and contain no added sugars, artificial flavors, or artificial sweeteners, says dietitian Elizabeth Shaw, RDN, CPT. (A little natural sweetness from real fruit juice is a-okay, though.) Though many sparkling waters come canned these days, if you choose an option in a plastic bottle, just double check that it’s BPA-free, Shaw says.

The following fizzy water brands fit the bill: They’re all recommended by dietitians, happy customers, and seltzer-obsessed Women's Health editors.

Spindrift

Shop at AmazonShop at Walmart
Pros
  • Flavored with real fruit
Cons
  • Some reviewers have said the lime and lemon flavors are too strong

This fan favorite contains real fruit juice, which gives each flavor its own hue that looks great in a glass. “It tastes the most ‘natural,’ without any 'natural flavors' added in,” says dietitian Alanna Waldron, RD. The acidity from the fruit juice, whether it’s bittersweet grapefruit, zesty lemon, or tangy lime, gives these cans a pleasant pucker in addition to a hint of natural sweetness. Many Spindrift flavors contain a few grams of natural sugar and range from zero to 15 calories per serving. As for the bubbles, they are small and mild, offering up fizziness without the burn. The WH Test Kitchen loves the new release, Grapeade, which has a nostalgic, grape soda-like flavor. And yes: It’s purple.

Nixie

Nixie
Pros
  • Purifies using reverse osmosis, which removes contaminants, fluoride, sodium, and many other impurities
Cons
  • Some reviewers found the bubbles too big

Get big, lively bubbles in these colorful cans, which are made with just carbonated water and organic flavors. They have zero calories and zero grams of sugar, making them a great substitute for water when you have a hard time hydrating with H2O alone or you’re just in the mood for something fizzy. In addition to straight bubbles, the brand also offers sparkling waters infused with green or black tea for a lightly caffeinated option (between 15-20 mg of caffeine per can) that still boasts zero cals or sugar. Shoemaker is a huge fan of Nixie sparkling water. “The brand is certified organic and has some tasty flavors like Strawberry Hibiscus and Watermelon Mint,” she says. The WH Test Kitchen also loves the Black Cherry Lime flavor, which has a bold, fruity taste.

Waterloo

Pros
  • Non-GMO Project Verified and Whole30 Approved, in BPA-free lined cans
Cons
  • Some reviewers say the aftertaste can be bitter

Harbstreet likes sparkling waters like Waterloo's that are free from phosphoric acid, which is often used to give beverages a tangy flavor. “This is a good option for people who may not be able to enjoy products containing phosphate, calcium, or potassium additives, like those with renal disease,” Harbstreet says.

Bear's Fruit

Bear's Fruit
Pros
  • Contains live probiotics
Cons
  • Only comes in four flavors

The brand that started out by making kombucha now offers sparkling water infused with live probiotics. Unlike their kombucha, which is black tea-based, these caffeine-free bubbles are naturally sweetened with fruit puree and contain no added sugar. WH Test Kitchen favorites include Blackberry Sage, which has an herbaceousness reminiscent of fruit tea, and Mango Habanero, which has a subtle spice countered by a light sweetness. Next time you’re craving a spicy marg, pour a can of Mango Habanero instead. Trust!

La Croix

La Croix
Pros
  • Does not contain any GMOs, vegan
Cons
  • The citrus flavors are higher in acidity, which can risk damage to tooth enamel.

It’s hard to miss with this brand, which has a huge lineup of flavors that should please any palate. Whether you prefer a classic citrus flavor, something fruity, or something in between, LaCroix probably has it. The WH Test Kitchen go-to? Pamplemousse, which has a lovely grapefruit taste without any bitterness. It’s bright, refreshing, and easy to slug back. It contains no calories or sugar, and is made with “naturally essenced” carbonated water.

Polar

Polar
Pros
  • Affordable and comes in a variety of sizes
Cons
  • Some reviewers say the flavors are not as strong as they’d like

Registered dietitians Lyssie Lakatos and Tammy Lakatos Shames love that Polar is free from any added sugars and sodium. The brand churns out reliably bubbly seltzers (no flat pours here) that taste great straight from the can or bottle or over ice. It doesn't hurt that you can find Polar sold almost anywhere, and with 20 flavors (the Cranberry Lime is too good) to choose from, you'll never get bored with this pick. Plus you can purchase a range of sizes, from a single can to a one-liter bottle.

Rave review: "Great taste, perfectly carbonated, and excellent selection of flavors, at an excellent price!"

Pros
  • Each water comes in a variety of sizes to choose from
Cons
  • More expensive than other brands

Harbstreet loves San Pellegrino because of its wide range of options. “I can opt for the mineral water if I want something bubbly without being overwhelmed with fizz," she says. When she's craving something sweeter, she'll go for one of Pellegrino's fruit-flavored beverages, which are like sparkling juices.

Recess

Recess
Pros
  • Infused with hemp and adaptogens
Cons
  • More expensive than other sparkling water brands

Think of this brand as sparkling water 2.0. Its cans are infused with magnesium, hemp, or adaptogens, or some combination of those three boosters to offer up extra flavor and potential relaxing or mood-enhancing benefits. While the brand also sells mocktails, their sparkling waters veer into a similar territory with ingredients far beyond carbonated water. They contain juice concentrates, mineral blends, and tea infusions which add a few grams of sugar and about 20 calories per can—but also complex flavor. Each offering in their “mood” collection provides 60% of your daily value of vitamin B6 and 15% of your daily value of magnesium, which are gains you won’t typically get from sparkling water.

Poland Spring

Pros
  • A great affordable option compared to other brands
Cons
  • Some reviewers say the orange flavor tastes too artificial and synthetic

Waldron is a long-time fan of Poland Spring's sparkling water. “Their sparkling water tastes very crisp and the flavors are subtle, without any artificial aftertaste,” she says. “I also find them to be one of the most reasonably priced sparkling waters on the market.”

Sanzo

Sanzo
Pros
  • Vegan and gluten-free
Cons
  • Limited number of flavors

The brand offers refreshing, sparkling waters inspired by Asian fruits such as yuzu and lychee. WH Test Kitchen editors love the calamansi flavor, which is pleasantly tangy and slightly floral. The cans are made with carbonated water and fruit juice, so they have a few grams of natural sugar but no added sugar, and about 10 calories.

bubly

bubly
Pros
  • Gluten-free
Cons
  • Bitter aftertaste according to some reviewers

"Similar to other flavored sparkling waters, bubly's products are unsweetened,” says dietitian Cara Harbstreet, RD of Street Smart Nutrition. She loves the brand's fun packaging—and that they've continued to expand their flavor offering. In addition to their caffeine-free seltzers, the brand also offers caffeinated sparkling water called bubly bounce, which contains 35 mg of caffeine. It tastes just like their regular sparkling water, so it's perfect when you need a hit of energy but aren't in the mood for a coffee or energy drink. Like their sparkling waters, the caffeinated cans contain no calories or sugar.

In addition to boxes of cans at the grocery store, you can also find individual bottles of bubly at lots of convenience stores, when you crave fizz on-the-go.

Perrier

Pros
  • Perfect base for any cocktail
Cons
  • Some reviewers said the canned option has a metallic aftertaste

While you may think of Perrier as something your parents might order at a fancy restaurant, don’t discount it. “It’s calorie-free and keeps it simple with just natural spring water, carbon dioxide, and natural flavors," say Lakatos and Lakatos Shames. "With so many waters sneaking in added sugar, we like that this one doesn’t."

Hal's New York Seltzer Water

Pros
  • Certified kosher
Cons
  • Some reviewers say the water is too carbonated which can be off-putting

While Waldron (who is based in New York City) admits she may be biased, she loves this "New York" seltzer water for its serious bubbles. “I always drink this brand when I want a heavily carbonated beverage without any added sugars,” she says. Tons of Women's Health editors can often be seen around the office with one of these in their hands, too.
