Description and Growing Information

General DescriptionDeciduous shrub reaching 8 m tall with rough brown or silvery grey bark, mid-green leaves and white, star-shaped spring flowers.
ShapeA conical, deciduous tree.
PropagationBy softwood or greenwood cuttings from late spring to early summer or by semi-hardwood cuttings from late summer to autumn.
CultivationGrow in moist, humus-rich, well-drained neutral to acid soil in sun or part shade with shelter from cold winds. Late frosts may damage flower buds.
PestsScale insects, coral spot, honey fungus and phytophthora root rot.
Leaf DescriptionAromatic, oval leaves, to 12 cm long, with pale undersides.
Flower DescriptionA star-shaped, white flower, up to 10 cm across, with 6- 12 petals.
