Radiobarite" "Hokutolite" - Radium Bearing Lead Rich Barite Shibukuro Hot Spring, Tamagawa River, Tazawako, Akita-Ken, Japan4.1 x 2.5 centimeters An old specimen of Radium bearing Barite from the famous locality at the Shibukuto Hot Spring in Japan. This material goes under the name "Hokutolite" as well as "Radiobarite" but is in fact simply a radium-bearing and lead-rich Barite. This material comes from old Hugh Ford stock and was likely recovered by soldiers returning from WWII. Because of the short half life of Radium, specimens deposited long ago have lost their "charge". This specimen still shows moderate activity under a geiger even after all these years. This locality is considered a Japanese scientific preseve, and collecting is not possible. A highly sought after rarity, though nondescript in appearance. Uranium and thorium bearing minerals are a fascinating subset of the mineralogical world, and when treated with proper respect can form a rewarding aspect of one's collection. Like a poisonous insect or flower, Uranium minerals are often possessed of bright colors and exotic form, making them among the most beautiful of all mineral species, and make for great conversation with noncollectors.
