Many camellia species are now flowering on the Armstrong campus, and one that is hard to miss is Camellia fraterna.
This species forms a shrub or small tree with an upright habit and fine-textured leaves. Our ten-year-old plants are over fifteen feet tall.
Despite having flowers small in size, Camellia fraterna flowers so heavily it produces an outstanding floral display. Camellia fraterna begins flowering for us in late December and continues for about six weeks.Late into its bloom period, the ground beneath this camellia is littered with fallen white petals.
Native to southeastern China, Camellia fraterna can be found on the Armstrong campus in the Camellia Garden.
