Former Sainsbury’s CEO Justin King has been appointed chairman of London estate agents Dexters.

The retail boss, who is largely credited with turning Sainsbury’s around during his decade-long tenure, will work alongside Dexter’s chief executive Andy Shepherd to grow the business beyond its existing 70 London offices.

Mr Shepherd said the company would be looking to Mr King’s extensive experience to help its expansion plans.

“We will value Justin’s input into how we can further build the Dexters brand and continue to strengthen the customer journey,” he said.

Before joining Sainsbury’s, Mr King was head of food at Marks & Spencer and is also known for helping to transform Asda into a market-leading business.

Mr King said: “I have been impressed by [Dexters’] leadership team and the company’s strong culture which puts its customers at the heart of everything they do.

“I look forward to working with the team at Dexters on opportunities to enhance their customer engagement and grow market share.”

Dexters’ latest results showed that in 2021, the company increased revenue by 32% to £143.3 million and made £40.6 million of profits.

In March this year it acquired digital property management and lettings business Howsy in order to increase its range of services to landlords.

As well as his post at Dexters, Mr King is a non-executive director at Marks & Spencer and retail software company Itim, and was recently appointed as chair of lottery operator Allwyn UK.
