<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> Grand March<br />

Grand March has been a tradition at <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> for many<br />

years. It was originally created so the Sisters of Saint Joseph, who taught at the<br />

school, could see the students before they went to their prom. Even though the<br />

Sisters of Saint Joseph no longer live on campus, the custom still continues. Grand<br />

March is an event that truly accentuates the pageantry of a high school prom.<br />

Dear Alumni and Friends of <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>:<br />

<strong>Fall</strong> <strong>2012</strong><br />

I have been in administration for about 30 years and I am always taken back when people comment that they are surprised that I work during<br />

the summer. They cannot imagine that there is much to do when the school year ends. Although there are fewer disruptions, I have always felt<br />

that this is one of the busiest times of the year.<br />

It is a time to reflect about what was accomplished in the past school year. I am proud of what we did at <strong>Spellman</strong> in 2011-<strong>2012</strong>. We opened<br />

our new Fitness Center and science labs. We also increased our Advanced Placement offerings and improved our academics. We had great success<br />

with the arts and our athletic teams continued to be successful. We even returned to Gillette Stadium and the Super Bowl for the second<br />

year in a row. We were proud to welcome back the Class of 1962 to participate in this year’s Graduation to celebrate their 50th Anniversary!<br />

Our greatest source of pride, this past year, was the honor of being the only school in the country to receive the Sadlier Award for Catholic<br />

Identity. This was presented in April at the National Catholic Educational Association Convention in Boston. The award<br />

reads, “We are proud to recognize <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> for shaping Catholic Identity in the Church’s life, faith<br />

and mission through the various ministries of Catholic Education.” This prestigious award reflects the hard work and<br />

commitment of the whole faculty and staff who continually work hard to instill Catholic values in our students. Our<br />

Masses, our prayer services and our daily devotion to doing God’s will and providing service to the Church and the<br />

community is a true reflection of our Mission.<br />

In the summer, you cannot spend too much time on reflection. A new school year begins quickly and we need<br />

to make sure that it is even more successful than the 2011-<strong>2012</strong> school year. I am very excited about the next<br />

school year. We are looking forward to two new leaders, Paul Kelly, our new Principal, and JT Nickley, our new<br />

Director of Admissions. With thanks and sadness we say good bye to Dorothy Lynch and Sister Pat, but they<br />

have set a firm foundation for the future. This year we will be taking a giant step forward with our commitment to technology by infusing<br />

the use of iPads in the classroom. Every teacher and student will be using their iPads to access information and to begin the transition to<br />

etextbooks.<br />

The new school year will also have a totally renovated cafeteria. When the students return they will find a beautiful modern Food Court with a<br />

new food service that promises delicious, healthy selections, a salad and soup bar and an innovative menu. We are excited about our new Strategic<br />

Plan and setting new goals and greater expectations for the years ahead. I have learned that during the summer, you cannot just reflect on<br />

the past…you have to clarify and communicate your vision for the future. I do believe our best years are still ahead of us!<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> is beginning its 55th year. We greatly appreciate the service and dedication of the Sisters of St. Joseph and the<br />

numerous teachers who have helped to make our school what it is today. However, for us to continue to strive to be the best Catholic co-ed<br />

high school in the Archdiocese, we need your support. We need your prayers. We need your feedback about what we can do better and how we<br />

can work together to reach our goals. We also need your financial support, no matter how small it may be. The cost of a <strong>Spellman</strong> education<br />

now hovers around $10,000 per student. This is a great burden for so many of our students and their parents who sacrifice to become part of the<br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> family.<br />

This summer I’ve had much to reflect about and plan. No plan is more important, though, than to find a way, working with our alums and<br />

friends of <strong>Spellman</strong>, to make <strong>Spellman</strong>’s commitment to Catholic education a realistic dream for many years to come. I look forward to working<br />

tirelessly with you and for you as we keep this dream alive. I agree with Anatole France who said, “To accomplish great things, we must not only<br />

act, but also DREAM; not only plan, but also BELIEVE.”<br />

Dear <strong>Spellman</strong> Community:<br />

In the sports world we frequently hear athletes and coaches talk about the importance of having home field advantage.<br />

chairman’s letter<br />

Equally often we hear sports stars speak of the urgency of winning ‘home’ games with nomenclature such as “Protect our house” ...<br />

and “Not in our yard you don’t”.<br />

At <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> we too are keenly protective of our ‘house’ … but by this we are not referring only to our<br />

sports fields.<br />

Instead, we are also addressing our serious attention to, and protection and preservation of, the prayerful nature of our<br />

house … our school … and our campus.<br />

My House shall be a House of Prayer is the theme of this edition of Tradition Magazine.<br />

This theme has been so chosen, in part, in order that we enthusiastically confront the plethora of competition<br />

to prayer.<br />

By helping our students become comfortable and confident that prayer is a useful component to ethical and intelligent decision making, we<br />

simultaneously address the fiction that a person is ever all alone, and or that alcohol, drugs, and other destructive behaviors are the fix.<br />

<strong>Fall</strong> <strong>2012</strong><br />

Let’s face it … prayer is in heavy competition with the world’s pace and complexity. Gladly, however, it is prayer that can help make it a fair fight.<br />

In closing, a special welcome to all of our new incoming students and families and to the newest members of our leadership team, our new Principal,<br />

Paul Kelly and to our new Admissions Director, JT Nickley. Welcome also to all of our new faculty and staff members.<br />

of the <strong>2012</strong> graduating class<br />

celebrated the end of their high<br />

school careers.<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong>’s <strong>2012</strong> Commencement<br />

marked the first<br />

time the new graduates formally<br />

shared Potvin Field with a group<br />

of <strong>Spellman</strong> alumni. The class of<br />

<strong>2012</strong> was not the only class to<br />

receive a diploma on this day. The<br />

class of 1962 returned to receive<br />

their Golden Diploma and celebrate<br />

50 years since they walked<br />

the halls of <strong>Spellman</strong> as students.<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> President Dr.<br />

John McEwan was eager to point<br />

out how much time had passed<br />

since the class of ‘62 left <strong>Spellman</strong>.<br />

“Fifty years is a long time,” he said.<br />

“Fifty years ago, the members of<br />

the Class of 1962 were the first to<br />

graduate from <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong>.<br />

The world was very different then.<br />

A gallon of gas was $0.25; the av-<br />

erage family income was $6,000 a<br />

year and tuition at <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

was going to go up to $200.”<br />

“Welcome back members of the<br />

Class of 1962 and I hope and pray<br />

that many of you in the Class of<br />

<strong>2012</strong>, like this class, will one day<br />

return with pride and nostalgia<br />

to your alma mater in the year<br />

2062. I truly believe that some of<br />

your greatest memories, toughest<br />

life lessons, best friends and most<br />

challenging moments take place<br />

in the four years that you are in<br />

high school. How fortunate that<br />

so many of us have shared those<br />

same experiences at <strong>Cardinal</strong><br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>: a place<br />

where the values and legacy of<br />

the Sisters of St. Joseph and the<br />

examples and lessons of so many<br />

great teachers helped to mold all<br />

of us into who we are today.”<br />

By the end of the ceremony, there<br />

were mixed emotions for most<br />

students. There was happiness<br />

and excitement to be moving on<br />

to new things in life, but there<br />

was also some apprehension. This<br />

was the last day as students of<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> and they were<br />

embarking on a new unfamiliar<br />

journey.<br />

As the students celebrated, several<br />

members of the class of <strong>2012</strong><br />

hugged their friends, parents, and<br />

teachers with the words of <strong>Cardinal</strong><br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> Principal Dorothy<br />

Lynch likely still on their minds.<br />

“Seniors, as graduates you join<br />

the company of <strong>Spellman</strong> alumni<br />

and you share with them the<br />

responsibility of helping to ensure<br />

that the tradition of <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

will continue for many years to<br />

come,” she said. “You have spent<br />

your last four years, sharing your<br />

gifts and talents, while indeed<br />

maximizing your potential in the<br />

areas of academics, extracurricular<br />

involvement and faith development.<br />

You have grown into mature<br />

young men and women who have<br />

learned to serve your school, your<br />

community and even beyond. You<br />

have become God’s ministers.<br />

Continue to be God’s servants<br />

after you leave <strong>Spellman</strong>.”<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong>’s <strong>2012</strong><br />

Valedictorian and Salutatorian<br />

Elaine Hanby, of East<br />

Bridgewater, is the <strong>2012</strong> <strong>Cardinal</strong><br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Valedictorian.<br />

Hanby is no stranger to<br />

being on stage. She danced at the<br />

Capachione <strong>School</strong> of Performing<br />

Arts throughout high school. She<br />

is also a member of the bell choir<br />

and youth group at The Union<br />

Congregational Church in East<br />

Bridgewater. During her time at<br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> she was a member of<br />

the Academic Decathlon Team<br />

and National Honor Society.<br />

Hanby plans to follow in her<br />

mother’s footsteps and attend the<br />

University of Alabama. She will<br />

study biology after being accepted<br />

into the Honors College. In addi-


tion to taking honors classes and<br />

living in honors housing, being a<br />

member of the Honors College<br />

will give her further community<br />

service opportunities.<br />

Laura Hill, of Bridgewater, is<br />

the salutatorian. During her time<br />

at <strong>Spellman</strong>, Hill was a member of<br />

National Honor Society for three<br />

years and a four-year-starter for<br />

the varsity tennis team. She was<br />

the captain of the team her senior<br />

year. She also spent time volunteering<br />

at the Animal Protection<br />

Class of ‘62 Earns<br />

Golden Diploma<br />

For the first time in school history,<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

honored a 50th anniversary class.<br />

The class of ‘62 was the first<br />

class to graduate from <strong>Cardinal</strong><br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> and the <strong>2012</strong> Commencement<br />

brought them back to<br />

campus to receive their commemorative<br />

diplomas.<br />

Each year, a new class will be<br />

honored with their Golden<br />

Diplomas. The class of ‘63 will be<br />

honored during the 2013 graduation<br />

ceremony. The commemorative<br />

diploma ceremony can be a<br />

nice addition to any 50th reunion<br />

celebration. It is a great excuse<br />

to return to <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

<strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> to reconnect with<br />

classmates and reminisce about<br />

the good times.<br />

being part of graduation, again.<br />

There have been many changes to<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>,<br />

over the years, but <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

the Sisters of Saint Joseph began<br />

Q/A with “Mr. <strong>Spellman</strong>” Tom Leonard<br />

In March, Tom Leonard was crowned “Mr. <strong>Spellman</strong>” after he competed for the title in the 3rd annual<br />

Mr. <strong>Spellman</strong> Contest.<br />

The Mr. <strong>Spellman</strong> Contest is a competition open to boys from all grade levels. The contestants compete in<br />

traditional pageant categories; casual wear, formal wear, talent, and a question and answer portion.<br />

The tuxedo’s are donated, courtesy of Tuxedo’s by Merian in Brockton. All the proceeds earned from the<br />

event benefit the <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Senior Class. This interview is an opportunity to learn<br />

more about your <strong>2012</strong> Mr. <strong>Spellman</strong>.<br />

Tradition Magazine: Why did you enter<br />

Mr. <strong>Spellman</strong>?<br />

Tom Leonard: It took a lot of<br />

persuading. When it first came<br />

up on the announcements during<br />

school, “I said no way.” I’m not really<br />

one for the spotlight. Then, a<br />

few weeks went by and my friends<br />

asked me if I was going do it. By<br />

then, I wasn’t sure. On the last day<br />

to sign up one of my friends and<br />

my sister had finally convinced me<br />

to do it.<br />

TM: Did you feel like you had a good<br />

chance of winning?<br />

TL: Not really. I’m not used to<br />

being onstage in front of a bunch<br />

of people and I’m not the most<br />

talkative person, so I didn’t really<br />

think I had a chance at winning.<br />

TM: What was your talent?<br />

TL: For my talent I did a drum<br />

solo.<br />

TM: What was your favorite portion of<br />

Mr. <strong>Spellman</strong>?<br />

TL: My favorite part of Mr. <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

was the talent portion. It was<br />

Godspell Songs Spread the Word<br />

Godspell first opened on Broadway<br />

in 1971, but it was performed<br />

on a <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> stage in<br />

March to a packed house.<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

performed three shows of the<br />

musical, Godspell. Over 100<br />

students were involved in the<br />

production; both on stage and<br />

behind the scenes. The production<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> • tradition<br />

was co-directed by faculty member<br />

and alumna, Dorrie Bessette<br />

and former faculty member and<br />

alumna, Suzanne Neuman.<br />

On the night of dress rehearsal,<br />

Bessette was very excited for the<br />

real shows to begin. “This is probably<br />

the most colorful and vibrant<br />

show I’ve been a part of,” Bessette<br />

said. “I think it will be very visually<br />

pleasing for the audience.”<br />

All proceeds from the show<br />

went to <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong>’s drama program. Godspell<br />

features a number of hit songs,<br />

notably “Prepare Ye (The Way of<br />

the Lord),” “By My Side,” and<br />

“Day by Day.” Each performance<br />

produced a memorable evening<br />

of music with a great message.<br />

Do Labs Dream About Coffee?<br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> Artists spotlight their creativity in local Dunkin Donuts poster contest<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> students designed<br />

several posters in art class<br />

that are now prominently featured<br />

at a local Dunkin Donuts.<br />

Rich Cleary, the owner of the<br />

Dunkin Donuts on 147 North<br />

Quincy Street in Abington<br />

sponsored an art competition.<br />

Cleary owns four Dunkin Donuts<br />

stores and he is a parent to two<br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> alumni and one current<br />

student.<br />

Cleary asked <strong>Spellman</strong> students<br />

to design a poster that combined<br />

a cute puppy with the theme of<br />

Dunkin Donuts. The Art 2 class<br />

rose to the occasion and several<br />

students received cash prizes.<br />

Frank Pantano placed first and<br />

received $100; Rory Donovan<br />

placed second receiving $50; and<br />

Erin Cunningham placed third<br />

receiving $25. Everyone who<br />

participated was awarded a $10<br />

Dunkin Donuts’ gift card for all<br />

their hard work.<br />

A Labrador inspired Cleary to<br />

propose this contest. “I saw a<br />

picture with a Labrador drinking<br />

an ice coffee out of a straw<br />

and Mr. Lynott and I decided we<br />

should build the contest around<br />

that photo,” Cleary said. “The<br />

theme stuck. We are going to do<br />

this every year.”<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong> was honored, in April,<br />

as the recipient of the Catholic<br />

Identity Award, at the National<br />

Catholic Educational Association<br />

Convention in Boston.<br />

The Catholic Identity Award<br />

is presented to a school for effectively<br />

and clearly demonstrating<br />

their work in promoting a<br />

vibrant and dynamic Catholic<br />

identity. Each year, this nationally<br />

recognized award is given to one<br />

school and one parish to honor<br />

the work they do in the ministry<br />

of Catholic education.<br />

The award is presented annually<br />

by William H. Sadlier, Inc. in<br />

conjunction with the host archdiocese<br />

of the NCEA Convention,<br />

which this year is the Archdiocese<br />

of Boston. This is the 15th year<br />

the Catholic Identity Award has<br />

Dorothy Lynch stepped down as Principal of <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

<strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> and took over the role of Registrar within the Finance<br />

Office.<br />

Dot, as she is affectionately known, has held many titles during her<br />

career; teacher, department chairperson, assistant principal, principal<br />

and now registrar. She has also played a vital role in the lives of many<br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> students.<br />

Lynch came to <strong>Spellman</strong> in 1992 from <strong>Cardinal</strong> Cushing <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

to serve as our Assistant Principal. She assumed the role of Principal<br />

in 2006. No event or activity happened without her input, support, and<br />

insightful contributions. She contributed to scores of activities, events,<br />

and programs, while never seeking credit or the limelight. She held<br />

an open-door policy for all: including faculty, staff, students, parents,<br />

and alumni. Lynch was always willing to stop her own work and make<br />

herself immediately available to any member of the <strong>Spellman</strong> family.<br />

With a pastoral approach to her role as Principal at <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

<strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>, she will continue to be a problem solver who is<br />

generous with her time and talent as the Registrar. <strong>Cardinal</strong><br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> President Dr. John McEwan recognized Lynch’s<br />

dedication to the school. “We appreciate Dot Lynch’s<br />

service as Assistant Principal and Principal over the<br />

last 20 years,” McEwan said. “We look forward to her<br />

continued commitment to <strong>Spellman</strong> in her new role.”<br />

Lynch has a gift for being detail-oriented, but also possesses<br />

the rare capacity to see the big picture. She is fair and<br />

open-minded, as well as a devout and prayerful<br />

role model for all in the <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

community. She is sensitive to the<br />

needs and concerns of <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

students and their families.<br />

These qualities will serve her well in the new role. The registrar’s primary<br />

responsibility will be collecting tuition and coordinating financial<br />

aid and scholarships while supporting the Finance Office.<br />

Lynch’s caring nature will help her excel in her new position. “As I<br />

transition to my new position as Registrar, which I feel fortunate to<br />

have, I look forward to working more closely with parents in the collection<br />

of tuition in a timely manner with compassion and fairness,”<br />

Lynch said. “Because this role is evolving, I am open and willing to<br />

accept new responsibilities.”<br />

“I have truly been enriched by the <strong>Spellman</strong> community, coworkers,<br />

parents, students and alumni who have worked and presently work to<br />

make <strong>Spellman</strong> the unique place that it is -- one with an outstanding<br />

academic program coupled with a deep faith experience where each<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> officials completed their search<br />

for a new educational and spiritual leader, in March, by appointing<br />

Paul Kelly as the school’s new Principal.<br />

Kelly was the principal of the St. Joseph Elementary <strong>School</strong> in<br />

Needham. He served in that position since 1997. Prior to his position<br />

at Saint Joseph Elementary <strong>School</strong>, Kelly served as a music teacher<br />

at Archbishop Williams <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> in Braintree and as Director of<br />

Music at Notre<br />

Dame Academy<br />

in Hingham.<br />

A committee comprised of faculty, parents, and students assisted in<br />

interviewing six semifinalists and then Kelly was selected. <strong>Cardinal</strong><br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> President, Dr. John McEwan is very pleased to have appointed<br />

Kelly. “I am confident that Paul has the enthusiasm, background<br />

and character to be an outstanding Principal for many years<br />

to come,” McEwan said.<br />

Kelly is replacing, former Principal Dorothy Lynch, who stepped<br />

down from her position to take a role in the Finance Office. She will<br />

be working as <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>’s Registrar.<br />

Among Kelly’s many accomplishments, Saint Joseph Elementary<br />

earned New England Association of <strong>School</strong>s and Colleges (NEASC)<br />

accreditation in 2004 and the school has experienced elevated standardized<br />

testing scores for all grades. Kelly instituted an extensive Fine<br />

Arts Program, before and after school programs, and he oversaw the<br />

creation of the school’s web site and the development of the Parent<br />

<strong>School</strong> Association.<br />

The new principal of <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> began his tenure<br />

July 1, <strong>2012</strong>. “I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to be joining the <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

community,” Kelly Said. “I’m coming from a school that seems<br />

very similar in terms of its mission to teach to the whole<br />

person, heart, mind and soul. To be part of that<br />

commitment on the high school level will<br />

be a very exciting and challenging<br />

opportunity for me. I really feel<br />

like this is all part of God’s plan.<br />

Kelly resides in Braintree with his wife, Marybeth, and their three<br />

children. He also serves as the Director of Music at St. John the Baptist<br />

Parish in Quincy.<br />

safely from a 12-month tour<br />

of duty on the front lines in<br />

Afghanistan, in March.<br />

Once he was home, he wasted<br />

little time in returning to <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

to discuss his experiences<br />

with the class of <strong>2012</strong>. He had<br />

been home for only a few weeks<br />

before giving a witness talk as part<br />

of the religion curriculum.<br />

Marquardt wasn’t a model student<br />

when he graduated in 2001. He<br />

will be the first one to admit it.<br />

He isn’t proud of his high school<br />

GPA or academic prowess.<br />

“When I walked out of here, I<br />

don’t even think I had a 2.0,”<br />

Marquardt said. “Most of the time<br />

I was here, all I cared about was<br />

football. I started for four years<br />

and it was my life.”<br />

Marquardt’s first two years at<br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> were especially difficult<br />

in the classroom. Deacon<br />

Ambrose became role models and<br />

helped Marquardt realize it wasn’t<br />

too late to mature and grow into a<br />

better person.<br />

“I remember Deacon Joe taking<br />

me aside after my sophomore<br />

year and telling me I needed to<br />

straighten myself out,” Marquardt<br />

said. “I’ve known Deacon Joe my<br />

entire life, because of my<br />

friendship with his<br />

me how to become<br />

a mentor during<br />

my time in peer<br />

ministry. People<br />

having faith in me<br />

gave me faith in myself. Ambrose<br />

would have me read articles in<br />

Sports Illustrated and then write a<br />

paper on them, so he could prove I<br />

had the capability to do my homework.<br />

He would give me weekly<br />

assignments as a way of engaging<br />

my love of sports and getting me<br />

to do something academically. I<br />

will always remember that.”<br />

Marquardt credits the atmosphere<br />

at <strong>Spellman</strong> with teaching him<br />

camaraderie. “You know how they<br />

talk about the <strong>Spellman</strong> family?”<br />

he asked. “Everyone knows<br />

someone from <strong>Spellman</strong>. I always<br />

appreciated the closeness here.<br />

No matter what, no matter how<br />

many years separate alumni, you’ll<br />

always have that connection. The<br />

teachers always went that extra<br />

mile and I feel like you don’t get<br />

that at a public school.”<br />

After <strong>Spellman</strong>, Marquardt attended<br />

Dean College on a football<br />

scholarship before transferring to<br />

Massasoit. He then set his sights<br />

on becoming a police officer. He<br />

worked as a correctional officer in<br />

Boston and then a campus police<br />

officer at Lasell College, before<br />

deciding to join the military.<br />

The day before he left for basic<br />

training, he was hired by the<br />

Abington Police Department.<br />

“Being a cop is the only thing I’ve<br />

ever wanted to do in life. I wanted<br />

to be a soldier and I wanted to be<br />

a cop,” Marquardt said. “Now I<br />

had the opportunity to do both.”<br />

Marquardt returned from his<br />

military training and worked as a<br />

police officer in Abington before<br />

transferring to the Hingham<br />

Police Department. He was able<br />

to work in Hingham for seven<br />

months before his unit was called<br />

to serve in Afghanistan. In March<br />

of 2011, he was deployed with the<br />

Army National Guard.<br />

During his time in Afghanistan,<br />

Marquardt experienced a lot of<br />

things that can be difficult to<br />

explain to someone who hasn’t<br />

experienced war. He earned a Purple<br />

Heart, after he was wounded<br />

by debris from a roadside bomb<br />

and an Army Commendation<br />

Medal for Valor for his role in a<br />

battle in the Afghan mountains.<br />

He also received a battlefield<br />

promotion to Corporal for his<br />

actions in combat.<br />

He prayed every single<br />

day he was deployed.<br />

God was a major factor<br />

in getting Marquardt home<br />

safely and he explained that<br />

to the students of <strong>Cardinal</strong><br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> during his witness<br />

talk. “PUSH; Pray Until Something<br />

Happens,” Marquardt said.<br />

It’s how I live my life every day.<br />

I wore a bracelet that said it.<br />

Prayer is everywhere<br />

and stuff did happen. I remember<br />

asking Deacon Joe what to do<br />

when something does happen<br />

and he said, ‘just keep praying.’<br />

You can lose your way sometimes,<br />

but it all comes back to that. It all<br />

comes down to PUSH.”<br />

Since returning from Afghanistan,<br />

Marquardt has resumed his duty<br />

as a Hingham Police Officer. He<br />

also has plans to wed his fiancée,<br />

Cara, in October.<br />

When he left <strong>Spellman</strong>, he never<br />

thought he would be called a<br />

role model, and he still doesn’t<br />

consider himself to be a great<br />

example, but the students of<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

might have a difficult time finding<br />

a better one than John Marquardt.<br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> junior, Evan<br />

Stimpson wears a bright pink<br />

bracelet on his left wrist. He says<br />

he wears it because pink is his<br />

favorite color and it was his best<br />

friend’s favorite color, but there is<br />

more to it than that. The bracelet<br />

also has the words “Always<br />

Remember” along with the initials<br />

“NW” inscribed on it.<br />

Evan plays soccer and baseball<br />

at <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong>. He is a<br />

motivated athlete and loves the<br />

competition of sports. Each time<br />

he puts his jersey on, he looks at<br />

the bracelet on his wrist and he is<br />

reminded of an inspiration that<br />

goes beyond his love for the game.<br />

Last summer, Evan Stimpson lost<br />

his best friend, Nick Watson, in<br />

a tragic car accident that claimed<br />

Nick’s life and forever altered the<br />

way Evan would live his.<br />

Nick and Evan grew up in Avon.<br />

They met playing Little League<br />

Baseball; Evan was 7-years-old<br />

and Nick was 8-years-old. Despite<br />

being a year apart in school, they<br />

were instantly bonded. They were<br />

both gifted athletes and they<br />

played on the same team for the<br />

next six years.<br />

Evan’s house was Nick’s second<br />

home and vice versa. They were<br />

best friends and Evan describes<br />

their relationship as a brotherhood.<br />

Nick stayed at Avon<br />

Middle-<strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> when Evan<br />

transferred to <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong>,<br />

before his freshman year. It was<br />

then, their journey together took<br />

a difficult turn; Nick was told the<br />

back pain he’d been having was a<br />

form of cancer.<br />

Nick’s diagnosis brought them<br />

even closer. During his freshman<br />

year, Evan and his mother spent<br />

countless hours and days at the<br />

hospital with Nick. Nick came<br />

to Evan’s games when he didn’t<br />

have treatment, and they often ate<br />

dinner together. They were told<br />

the cancer was in remission, but<br />

it returned after a month, forcing<br />

Nick to begin the grueling treatment<br />

all over again.<br />

Evan’s grades suffered, but it was<br />

difficult to blame him with ev-<br />

he was trying to balance school,<br />

was a difficult one, but his<br />

sophomore year may have proved<br />

impossible if he didn’t have the<br />

support of the <strong>Spellman</strong> community.<br />

About a month before<br />

the 2011-<strong>2012</strong> school year, while<br />

Evan’s father was home from<br />

Afghanistan, for two weeks, Nick<br />

was killed in an automobile accident.<br />

“It is the worst night of my<br />

life,” Evan said. “Nick passed away<br />

and then, the next morning, we<br />

had to drive my dad to the airport<br />

so he could go back to Afghanistan.<br />

Losing my best friend is the<br />

hardest thing I have ever had to<br />

deal with. I still haven’t accepted<br />

the fact that he’s gone.”<br />

Evans’s sophomore soccer season<br />

began eleven days after Nick<br />

passed away and he had the difficult<br />

task of trying to focus on<br />

sports and school without his<br />

best friend’s support. “If I wasn’t<br />

attending school at <strong>Spellman</strong>; I<br />

don’t know what I would have<br />

done,” Evan said. “This school<br />

helped me in more ways than I<br />

can think of. Once the school year<br />

started, I felt like I had so much<br />

support from everyone.”<br />

Evan didn’t consider himself to<br />

be very religious before he came<br />

to <strong>Spellman</strong>, but he credits his<br />

relationship with God as a major<br />

factor in helping cope with his<br />

feelings. “There are two Bible<br />

verses I hold close to me;<br />

Psalm 23:4 ‘Even though I walk<br />

through the valley of the shadow<br />

of death, I will fear no evil, for<br />

you are with me; your rod and<br />

your staff, they comfort me.’<br />

And Philippians 4:13 ‘I can do<br />

everything through him who gives<br />

me strength.’ I write them on my<br />

wrist bands at baseball to always<br />

remind myself God and Nick are<br />

with me.”<br />

The <strong>2012</strong>-2013 school year brings<br />

a lot of hope with it. Evan’s father<br />

is now home from Afghanistan.<br />

Evan wants to build on the strong<br />

academic performance he finished<br />

his sophomore year with; he just<br />

missed honor roll by one C+. In<br />

addition to playing soccer and<br />

baseball, he also joined the <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

Choir.<br />

Evan plans to continue wearing<br />

his bright pink bracelet<br />

even though he does not need a<br />

reminder to “Always Remember”<br />

his best friend, Nick Watson. “I<br />

just live every day by trying to accomplish<br />

something I know Nick<br />

can’t,” Evan said. “I don’t take<br />

anything for granted.”<br />

Sister Patricia Lynch, but that will<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong>’s first Director<br />

of Admissions, Sister Pat, as she<br />

is affectionately known, decided<br />

to make the 2011-<strong>2012</strong> school<br />

year her last, by announcing her<br />

retirement in June. JT Nickley has<br />

been hired to assume the role of<br />

Director of Admissions and<br />

he has big shoes to fill. Anyone<br />

would have a difficult time<br />

replacing the energy, enthusiasm,<br />

and nurturing approach Sr. Pat<br />

brought to the job.<br />

Sr. Pat spent countless hours<br />

meeting with parents and potential<br />

students, while counseling<br />

them on their decision to attend<br />

<strong>Spellman</strong>. Through Sr. Pat’s<br />

direction, <strong>Spellman</strong>’s admissions<br />

process has been a welcoming<br />

place for young men and women<br />

who seek a high school experience<br />

that offers academic excellence,<br />

faith development, and abundant<br />

leadership opportunities.<br />

Sr. Pat joined the Sisters of Saint<br />

Joseph at age 18 after being taught<br />

by nuns in parochial school. After<br />

graduating from Regis College,<br />

Sister Pat obtained a Master of<br />

Science in Mathematics from<br />

Northeastern University. She<br />

began her ministry in elementary<br />

and secondary Catholic schools<br />

in the Archdiocese of Boston. In<br />

1985, Sister Pat was elected to the<br />

General Council of the Sisters of<br />

Saint Joseph of Boston. A position<br />

she held for nine years.<br />

At the invitation of Sister Thomasine,<br />

Sr. Pat joined the <strong>Cardinal</strong><br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> community<br />

in 1994, when her term<br />

a position did not exist in many<br />

Catholic secondary schools, Sr.<br />

Thomasine had the foresight and<br />

vision to understand the advantage<br />

of an Admissions Office.<br />

However, it is due to the commitment,<br />

spirit, and dedicated<br />

service of Sr. Pat, that<br />

<strong>Spellman</strong>’s Admissions<br />

Department is where<br />

it is today.<br />

Sr. Pat strongly believes,<br />

through the power of the Holy<br />

Spirit, the Church lives to<br />

continue the mission of Christ.<br />

With other Christians, Sisters of<br />

Saint Joseph participate in this<br />

transforming mission. The Sisters<br />

of Saint Joseph mission of unity<br />

requires that they be Christ’s<br />

healing presence among people.<br />

Each day, Sister Pat energized the<br />

halls of <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong> with her<br />

spirit and shared it with everyone<br />

she encountered.<br />

When asked to consider her<br />

ministry at <strong>Spellman</strong>, Sister Pat<br />

turned to the Constitution of the<br />

Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston<br />

which states, “We acknowledge<br />

humbly and gratefully that from<br />

those to whom we minister we<br />

receive more than we give, indeed,<br />

in full measure and flowing over.”<br />

She believes, with all her heart<br />

that, the time she spent at <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

is not about her, but about<br />

all of the individuals that came<br />

before her. It is their contributions<br />

that made it possible for Sr. Pat to<br />

represent <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong> to potential students as a<br />

Catholic school that offers young<br />

men and women opportunities to<br />

maximize their potential, to<br />

respect themselves and others;<br />

to serve their community, their<br />

Church and the world.<br />

Although, because of Sr. Pat’s<br />

retirement, <strong>Spellman</strong> will no<br />

longer employ any Sisters of Saint<br />

Joseph, Sr. Pat does not want to be<br />

considered the last of the Sisters<br />

of Saint Joseph at <strong>Spellman</strong>.<br />

“Another one could come along<br />

at anytime,” Sr. Pat said. ““I don’t<br />

think God stops calling.’’<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> President Dr.<br />

the Board of Trustees and everyone<br />

at <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> when<br />

he said, “Sister Patricia Lynch has<br />

been a gift to <strong>Spellman</strong> for almost<br />

20 years. Her values, her energy<br />

and her great faith were evident<br />

in everything she did. There is no<br />

doubt she will be missed. We are<br />

all very thankful to have had the<br />

opportunity to work with her.”<br />

Sr. Pat is always quick to remind<br />

people how blessed she feels<br />

and how appreciative she is for<br />

everything she’s had in life, but<br />

it is the <strong>Spellman</strong> family who is<br />

truly blessed for having Sr. Pat as<br />

a member of their community for<br />

18 years. Thank you, Sr. Pat!


For the first time in <strong>Cardinal</strong><br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>’s his-<br />

tory, someone other than Sister<br />

Patricia Lynch will be welcoming<br />

prospective students, this fall, as<br />

the Director of Admissions and<br />

he has a familiar name.<br />

JT Nickley was hired as the new<br />

Director of Admissions in June.<br />

Nickley attended <strong>Spellman</strong> and<br />

graduated in 2001, but his <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

roots reach far beyond just<br />

being an alumnus of <strong>Cardinal</strong><br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. He has<br />

been around <strong>Spellman</strong> his entire<br />

life because he is the son of<br />

Deacon Joe Nickley ’75 and he<br />

also has five aunts and uncles who<br />

attended <strong>Spellman</strong>.<br />

After Nickley graduated from<br />

<strong>Spellman</strong>, he attended Stonehill<br />

College. He received a Bachelor’s<br />

Degree in Religious Studies in<br />

2005 and he returned to <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

as an assistant football coach in<br />

the fall. He made a couple stops,<br />

teaching at other schools, before<br />

he found his way into the Spell-<br />

man classroom. Nickley joined the<br />

Religion Department in 2007.<br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> had a major impact on<br />

Nickley’s life. “I chose to attend<br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> because my family was<br />

a part of <strong>Spellman</strong> and I chose to<br />

come back and teach at <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

because <strong>Spellman</strong> became my<br />

family,” Nickley said. “I enjoyed<br />

my time here at <strong>Spellman</strong> spiritually,<br />

socially, academically and athletically.<br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> helped round<br />

me into the man I am today.”<br />

Nickley was still employed in the<br />

Religion Department at <strong>Cardinal</strong><br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> when the Director of<br />

Admissions position opened. After<br />

interviewing several qualified<br />

candidates, Nickley emerged as<br />

the clear choice. “I loved teaching<br />

Religion in the classroom,” Nickley<br />

said. “However, when Sr. Pat<br />

announced her retirement, I knew<br />

instantly I would be applying for<br />

the position. In the classroom, I<br />

let the students know how much<br />

I loved God and as Director of<br />

Admissions, I want to let prospec-<br />

Nickley said. “I do not wish to<br />

change much; only to continue to<br />

build upon the foundation laid by<br />

Sr. Pat and the other Sisters of St.<br />

Joseph. One new step I plan to<br />

include, going forward, is integrating<br />

more technology into the<br />

admissions process through<br />

online applications, our iPad<br />

initiative and social media.<br />

Nickley and his wife, Jackie, reside<br />

in Abington. She is also a <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

graduate, class of 2000. They<br />

met at <strong>Spellman</strong> and they‘ve been<br />

together since. They have a oneyear-<br />

old daughter named Brynn<br />

and they are expecting a second<br />

Both spring track teams finished the 2011-<strong>2012</strong> school year<br />

undefeated and as Catholic Central League champions.<br />

Both teams were been crowned CCL champions for the fourth<br />

straight season. The girls’ record since the beginning of 2009 is 33-0-2.<br />

The boys have a record of 34-0, over that same time period. Several<br />

school records have been broken.<br />

All this has been accomplished without a home track to practice or<br />

compete on. The <strong>Spellman</strong> campus has many modern amenities, but it<br />

doesn’t have a track. Both teams practice wherever they can and they<br />

travel to every meet they participate in. Practices take place in the gym,<br />

cafeteria, hallways, parking lots, and the fields. The team is happy to<br />

practice anywhere they can.<br />

The girls are coached by Anne Bernazzani and the boys are coached<br />

by Bob Ruel and Assistant Coach Terry Branch. Both teams are filled<br />

with dedicated and talented athletes.<br />

Bernazzani recognizes the talent both teams possess. “We have had<br />

many talented, dedicated athletes train very hard and they’ve solidly<br />

established themselves within our league,” Bernazzani said. “Much<br />

of their success is a combination of talent, dedication and support<br />

amongst themselves and from the <strong>Spellman</strong> community. We get support<br />

from the staff when they allow us to run in the halls or take over<br />

the cafeteria when the weather is too inclement. We also receive support<br />

from Athletic Director Mike Gerrish, making sure we have the<br />

proper and sometimes very expensive equipment, although, an actual<br />

track would be really nice.”<br />

The day a track is added to <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong>’s campus may be several<br />

years away, but, in the meantime, the girls and boys track teams will<br />

just keep winning without one.<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong> has decided it will lace up<br />

the skates, once again, and restore<br />

a hockey program that hasn’t<br />

existed since the 1970s.<br />

Officials from <strong>Spellman</strong> met<br />

with interested parents in May to<br />

announce the future development<br />

of a varsity hockey program. Ice<br />

hockey will return in the winter,<br />

starting out on a club basis before<br />

Beginning in the <strong>2012</strong>-2013 school year, <strong>Spellman</strong> students<br />

will have more food choices and a completely renovated and redesigned<br />

cafeteria to eat the food in.<br />

In the fall of 2011, sophomore students were surveyed about the<br />

strengths and weaknesses of <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong>. The most common<br />

complaint <strong>Spellman</strong> officials received was the lack of variety and the<br />

costly price of food in the cafeteria. <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

listened and changes were made.<br />

Demolition began as soon as the students left in June. The plans call for<br />

an entirely new cafeteria with an extensive food serving line. NexDine<br />

is taking over as <strong>Spellman</strong>’s food service provider. They offer a much<br />

more extensive menu than the previous food service provider.<br />

“Everyone will be in for a pleasant surprise in the fall, <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

President Dr. John McEwan said. “The addition of NexDine as<br />

transitioning into a varsity program<br />

for the 2014-2015 season.<br />

“We are very excited about the<br />

possibility of hockey returning to<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>,”<br />

said <strong>Spellman</strong> President Dr. John<br />

McEwan said. “It was a great<br />

program many years ago and we<br />

still miss it. I am very optimistic<br />

about the enthusiastic response<br />

from parents and students.”<br />

The plan involves three stages.<br />

The first year, the program will<br />

be in the club team phase and<br />

partially funded by parents. Each<br />

student will pay a $660 player fee.<br />

The fee will cover ice time and<br />

uniforms. The <strong>Cardinal</strong>s will skate<br />

practice five days a week and play<br />

a full junior varsity schedule.<br />

The 2014-2015 school year<br />

will mark the official return of<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong>’s Varsity<br />

Hockey Program. It has been<br />

over 30 years since the <strong>Cardinal</strong>s<br />

donned the red and gold hockey<br />

jerseys in varsity competition and<br />

this plan helps end that streak and<br />

put <strong>Spellman</strong> back on the ice.<br />

In March, over the course of two days, 30 committed<br />

members of the <strong>Spellman</strong> family began creating the <strong>Cardinal</strong><br />

<strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>2012</strong>-2017 Strategic Plan.<br />

The committee consisting of teachers, administrators, parents,<br />

students, alumni and members of the board of trustees<br />

travelled to Stonehill College and participated in group discussions<br />

about various topics related to <strong>Spellman</strong>. The goal of<br />

the committee was to establish a long-range direction for the<br />

school and provide a clear focus for future pursuits by identifying<br />

priorities for improvement. The <strong>2012</strong>-2017 Strategic<br />

Plan is the culmination of their analysis and work.<br />

Strategic Planning is a process for creating an organization’s<br />

preferred future. It is a long-range planning<br />

process for organizational renewal and transformation<br />

which provides a framework for improving<br />

programs, management functions and evaluation of<br />

an organization’s progress. Strategic planning helps<br />

organizations think and act strategically, develop effective<br />

strategies, clarify future directions, establish<br />

priorities, improve organizational performance, build<br />

teamwork and expertise and deal effectively with a<br />

rapidly changing environment. The strategic planning<br />

process involves a series of steps that moves an<br />

organization through:<br />

• analyzing relevant external trends and their<br />

implications;<br />

• assessing organizational capacity to manage<br />

external change;<br />

• developing a mission statement and guiding<br />

beliefs;<br />

• establishing goals, objectives and action plans<br />

designed to move the organization to where it<br />

wants to be;<br />

• setting a strategic direction to follow to achieve<br />

its mission and objectives;<br />

• communicating its mission, beliefs and goals/<br />

objectives to all stakeholder groups;<br />

energized and enthusiastic with the results of the strategic<br />

fortunate to have such loyal, dedicated people interested in its<br />

future,” he said. “I was very moved by all the committee got<br />

done and I am very excited about where we go from here.”<br />

The <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

<strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Legacy Gala and<br />

Auction, held in March, honored<br />

five very deserving members of<br />

the <strong>Spellman</strong> Family with the<br />

Sequere Deum Award.<br />

The Legacy Gala celebrates the<br />

heritage of <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

<strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> and pays tribute to<br />

everyone that has made the school<br />

what it is today. The Sequere<br />

Deum Award honors a few of the<br />

many individuals that have helped<br />

shape the school’s proud legacy.<br />

The silent and live auction<br />

featured several items that raised<br />

money for the <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

Annual Fund and the “paddles<br />

up” portion was able to increase<br />

financial support for the Fund for<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong>.<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> President,<br />

Dr. John McEwan enjoyed the<br />

Gala. “<strong>Spellman</strong>’s Legacy Gala<br />

is a wonderful opportunity to<br />

celebrate people who have made<br />

a great difference in the history<br />

of the school,” he said. “Having<br />

this year’s event at Granite Links<br />

was outstanding. It was a great<br />

success!”<br />

Tom Kenney, a 1969 graduate,<br />

was the first member of the Kenney<br />

clan to excel in academics and<br />

athletics at <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

<strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. Tom met his future<br />

wife, Joan, at <strong>Spellman</strong>. He credits<br />

Catholic education for instilling<br />

him with a sense of compassion<br />

and a love of learning that shaped<br />

his values. He believes attending<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

was the turning point of his life.<br />

As long time, faithful supporters,<br />

of the <strong>Spellman</strong> family, Tom<br />

and Joan are always ready to help<br />

anyway they can.<br />

Jon Lemieux is a member of the<br />

class of 1987. Jon is a registered<br />

professional engineer and partner<br />

at VERTEX Construction Services,<br />

Inc., a national consulting<br />

firm headquartered in Weymouth<br />

which served as Owner’s Project<br />

Manager for <strong>Spellman</strong>’s fitness<br />

center and science lab renovations<br />

project. He is a member of<br />

<strong>Spellman</strong>’s Drama Hall of Fame<br />

as well as a member of the school<br />

building committee.<br />

Fr. Oscar Pratt is currently the<br />

parochial vicar of Holy Name<br />

Parish in West Roxbury. Fr. Pratt<br />

comes from a very musical family<br />

and he has always enjoyed singing<br />

and performing. Each <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

Mass Fr. Pratt attends reaffirms<br />

the belief that music is not merely<br />

a means of entertainment, but is<br />

also an instrument of prayer. It is<br />

at the <strong>2012</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> Golf Classic<br />

The Athletic Hall of Fame recognizes various<br />

contributors to the athletic program; including<br />

outstanding alumni athletes and coaches whose<br />

performance in their sport(s) was exceptional.<br />

hosted more than 144 golfers, on a<br />

beautiful day in June, in this year’s<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> Golf Classic.<br />

The event sold out quickly, but<br />

many alumni, friends, faculty and<br />

current students were brought<br />

together for a well played tournament.<br />

The <strong>2012</strong> <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

Golf Classic was an amazing<br />

success. We would like to extend<br />

a special thank you to all of our<br />

sponsors, volunteers and our tournament<br />

committee members.<br />

After golf, <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

held an induction ceremony for<br />

the <strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> Athletic<br />

for a deacon or priest to give a<br />

Gerry Cox (CSHS ‘75) is moving<br />

with his family back to the U.S.<br />

after spending the last two years in<br />

the Kingdom of Bahrain. Gerry, a<br />

physician and a Captain in the U.S.<br />

Navy Medical Corps, recently completed<br />

an assignment as the senior<br />

medical advisor responsible for the<br />

Navy’s medical facilities throughout<br />

the Middle East, including the war<br />

in Afghanistan; other countries<br />

such as Egypt, Kuwait, and Jordan;<br />

and on Navy ships from the Arabian<br />

Gulf to the coast of Somalia.<br />

From 2006-2008 Gerry served in<br />

Okinawa, Japan as the executive<br />

officer of the U.S. Naval Hospital<br />

there, then commanded the Naval<br />

Hospital at Camp Lejeune, North<br />

Carolina from 2008-2010. He and<br />

his wife Catherine will reside in<br />

the Washington, DC area and have<br />

two children. Their son Alex, who<br />

just graduated from The Bahrain<br />

<strong>School</strong>, will be a freshman at<br />

Harvard College this fall and their<br />

daughter Caroline will enter the 8th<br />

Peggy Sheehan’s son, Camille,<br />

became a United States citizen in<br />

February and he will be returning to<br />

Haiti in August on a mission trip,<br />

to assist his “brothers and sisters” at<br />

“Hope for the Children of Haiti”<br />

orphanage where he was raised.<br />

Terri Tobin-Young’s son, Sam,<br />

won a Fulbright for newly licensed<br />

teachers and after graduating cum<br />

laude from Salve Regina University<br />

in Newport, RI he spent the<br />

fall semester teaching History in a<br />

French high school in Normandy.<br />

He was one of 15 new teachers<br />

nationwide, and the only New<br />

Englander, selected. Mark Delano’s<br />

son, Patrick, has been drafted by the<br />

Red Sox. He now has the enviable<br />

dilemma of deciding whether to<br />

attend Vanderbilt University or play<br />

Major League ball. Patrick graduated<br />

from Braintree <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

and is an All-Scholastic.<br />

A group of Brockton Firefighters<br />

participated in the climb for air a<br />

charitable event for the American<br />

cancer society.<br />

Throughout the year, the American<br />

Lung Association hosts multiple<br />

stair climbs throughout the United<br />

States. These events help raise<br />

awareness and donations to support<br />

research on lung disease and pro-<br />

class notes<br />

mote clean air. Every year hundreds<br />

of firefighters are diagnosed with<br />

dehabilitating lung diseases, directly<br />

related their exposure to hazardous<br />

smoke and fumes. Therefore in<br />

support of our fellow brothers &<br />

sisters, members of the Brockton<br />

Fire Department participated this<br />

year. Together the group ascended<br />

the Boston skyscraper at One<br />

Brockton Place, climbing a total of<br />

82 flights of stairs (42 stories or 789<br />

stairs), while wearing complete firefighter<br />

turnout gear, which includes<br />

an SCBA, for a approximate total<br />

weight of 60-70lbs. Among these<br />

Brockton Firefighters there were<br />

four <strong>Spellman</strong> graduates - Bill Hill<br />

’87, Paul Muzrim ’91 and Dan Foye<br />

works for the state of Alaska as the<br />

Director of Trade Marketing for<br />

tourism. As for me, I am working in<br />

Vermont, as the Director of Community<br />

Services at the Upper Valley<br />

Haven, a non-profit agency serving<br />

in May with a program called<br />

DreamFar that trains at-risk high<br />

school students (and their teachers)<br />

to run marathons! She and her husband<br />

also bought a house in North<br />

Attleboro, MA. I (Amy Ouellette)<br />

went back to school full-time in<br />

September 2011 as a Communications<br />

major with a concentration<br />

in Public Relations and a minor in<br />

Marketing. I joined the Public Relations<br />

Student Society of America<br />

(PRSSA) at Salem State University<br />

and competed in a national case<br />

study campaign competition on<br />

childhood obesity over the winter.<br />

As part of the competition we<br />

planned an Indoor Field Day event<br />

for families in the Salem area. It<br />

was an intense campaign, but I<br />

loved it. In June, the Publicity Club<br />

of New England awarded our fourperson<br />

team a Bronze Bell Ringer<br />

award for our campaign and I got<br />

to mingle with some great PR pros<br />

from the Boston area. I was also<br />

elected Vice President of Chapter<br />

Development for the Salem State<br />

Chapter of PRSSA for the next<br />

school year. My young college<br />

friends do not discriminate against<br />

30-something-year-old students!<br />

Juggling two kids, a husband, two<br />

dogs, a house and the responsibilities<br />

of being an adult student are<br />

hard, but I love college this time<br />

around and am doing better academically<br />

than I did when I was 18.<br />

I even made the Dean’s List both<br />

semester! Two more years to go! I<br />

a bachelor of science in marketing<br />

management with a double minor<br />

in communications and business<br />

management. This past December I<br />

was also lucky to land a job beginning<br />

this August down in North<br />

Carolina. I will be working for the<br />

East Carolina University Athletic<br />

Department. I will be the Graduate<br />

Assistant in Athletics Compliance<br />

for the ECU pirates of Greenville,<br />

North Carolina. On top of being<br />

paid, I will be getting my master’s<br />

paid for as well. I was accepted into<br />

the Masters of Business Administration<br />

program this past February.<br />

As I look back on my last four years<br />

of college and all the success I had<br />

at SPC as a student-athlete, I realized<br />

rather quickly the education,<br />

values, and people from <strong>Spellman</strong><br />

brought me to where I am today.<br />

On the first Friday of<br />

every month, the students at<br />

<strong>Cardinal</strong> <strong>Spellman</strong> assemble for adoration.<br />

They sit quietly in the presence of The Blessed Sacrament. In between<br />

first Fridays, every Tuesday night, they gather with other people at the<br />

Church of the Holy Ghost in Whitman, to continue perpetual adoration<br />

and to pray The Hour of Divine Mercy. At first they sit quietly, then,<br />

they pray the Chaplet together. They listen to a brief reflection on St.<br />

Maria Fuastina’s life and diary followed by benediction. Afterwards, they<br />

can stay, if they choose, to pray together or by themselves. People young<br />

and old, praying, on a Tuesday night, in the summer, in the winter, in<br />

good weather and bad. <strong>Spellman</strong> students are regular attendees.<br />

But why do they come “from generation to generation” to Adoration?<br />

Here’s what they say. Some come to offer a prayer thanks, some to pray<br />

for forgiveness. Some come to pray for healing while others pray for<br />

their family. Some come to offer praise and others come to pray for the<br />

courage of another day. They come for all these reasons, but the most<br />

compelling reason they come we think, is to sit awhile with their God,<br />

alone, just them and their God, because, “The human heart is always<br />

drawn by love”, as St. Catherine of Siena told us<br />

On one night, you might see the tear filled eye of a student who speaks<br />

with the Deacon just before Adoration begins. The student says; “I need<br />

to get a handle on my life…I need Jesus in my life”. He is encouraged<br />

and others pray with him and he begins his healing. Or, you may see the<br />

gentle smile of compassion from an older person of prayer that reassures<br />

the one in doubt about the power of God’s mercy. Or you might see<br />

that gentle reassurance that comes from God through prayer from one<br />

stranger to the next. When you see it, you will know it and you will be<br />

moved.<br />

When asked, they all speak of common feelings like a powerful sense of<br />

peace, a release, warmth, “decompressing”, a sense of comfort, a renewed<br />

strength, and an awe of God’s mercy and love. For whatever reason they<br />

pray in that quiet place, they go away comforted by a powerful peace<br />

that comes only from God. They experience the warmth of His love<br />

and mercy. And, they know that they want to return. One person<br />

describes the experience this way:<br />

Lord I went to give you thanks yesterday<br />

I did not go because I feared you,<br />

Although I do Lord, I do<br />

I went because I needed the warmth of your love and the relief<br />

of your mercy and your gentle healing hand on my shoulder<br />

And I cannot feel the warmth of your love or your mercy or healing<br />

when I am afraid and trembling<br />

I know you love us and I know you love me Lord<br />

And when I bow my head and open my heart toYou<br />

There is no fear, no trembling, no sadness about today<br />

or yesterday or tomorrow<br />

There is only a peaceful, soothing warmth<br />

smoldering through my soul<br />

And it seeps and soothes and renders my body calm<br />

My mind sees only forward and back at the same time<br />

Light in the darkness<br />

And in those flashes I sense you, I can feel your presence<br />

Always calling me closer but not too quickly<br />

You fade from my sight and I know I must follow you<br />

to the next glimpse<br />

I want to do that Lord<br />

I know that place of peace is only where You are<br />

I have surrendered to your love<br />

There, in that place, there is only goodness<br />

And that is why I will not be afraid<br />

We encourage all who may read this story of “Adoration and <strong>Spellman</strong>”<br />

to respond as so many of the <strong>Spellman</strong> students do every week to the<br />

request made by the disciples of Jesus, “Lord, teach us how to pray”.<br />

Come to Adoration and see the power and peace, the comfort and the<br />

joy for yourself. In that way, we hope you too may know and share His<br />

peace more fully and come to better understand of why it is so important<br />

to all of us to continue to ensure that His house at <strong>Spellman</strong> “shall be a<br />

house of prayer.”
